In this video I'll show how i built an RC airboat for racing. The boat can travel on water, tile floor, and wet grass. It's powered by a 3S LiPo Battery (12V) turning a pair of counter-rotating brushlesss motors with 6" 3-bladed propellers. It's also equipped with a pump draw water from beneath the hull and shoot it out a nozzle at the front of the boat to knock over other racers.
I originally equipped the boat with an audio amplifier to play music as a gimmick, but i found that it added unneccesary weight and complexity, and couldn't be heard over the sound of the propellers, so I removed it.
The Hull is made from 3d printed sections that are glued together and smoothed out with body filler and epoxy resin. I hand-painted the parts instead of spray painting because I had a large supply of acrylic paints for arts and crafts.
Specifications (to the best of my knowledge):
Battery: 3S / 2200 mAh
Motors: 1400 kV
ESCs: 30A
Propeller: 6" / 3 blade / Pitch Unknown
Max. Current Draw: 22A
Water Cannon: 80 PSI / 4LPM / 4mm Nozzle

The one thing that I can see that you might want to consider is some sort of mesh cap for your water canon intake, mainly to prevent potential damage to the pump if something gets pulled in and caught. During construction, it would have worked to just get a piece of plastic canvas to bond into it, perhaps a layer of aquarium sponge filter, but something intended to keep anything solid or to mucky from jamming up your water canon.
A speaker with danger zone playing ! That was a great idea 😂😂
Now it just needs a notched rear to the hull to help improve planing/stability a bit, and a steering gyro like RC drift cars have. Also a toggle for a differential thrust mode if you want really tight turns for whatever reason. Could have put some fiberglass strips or tape over the seams in the epoxy layer to really improve durability vs. CA glue, and some more sanding work in to improve the currently crude looking paint job.
It's definitely neat, yet there's room for a few more revisions that could still make it even better.
Those motor and props sound very much like a rave hoover synth.
Your ability to edit and take us on a journey of your project is astonishing. Every voice over for all the clips are honest AND amazing. Love the attention to detail on your projects! Super informative, great job! Keep it up :)
Love your projects!
awesome as always
frog very nice
Nice project! Maybe you should try powering it with the water jet? If the first nozzle you came up with required half power to compensate....You could also try pushing the jet into the water rather than in air?
Nice boat 😁 i never thought about 3D printing a nozzle. I have to try it 👍👍
Your who I want to be when I grow up
aww mannn i was looking forward to turtle lmao
great project nonetheless! :D
You should have just dispensed with the speaker and played the music through the motor windings, same as how the ESC's play their start-up ditty. You'd probably have to load MIDI files instead of WAV's but it could still be fun.
Good job !
exelent
2005: You have too much time on your hands
2015+:
the 5v from the esc's are vbat (12V) pulsed. Putting both the esc 5v in parrallel blows one of the 5V BECs becuase unless the pulses are perectly synced, you'll get more than 5V until 1 of them blows.
Looks great!
The back of your speaker needs to be enclosed to produce decent output. The hull would make a nice enclosure.
You are not lazy, like electroboom.
the full power was a big lol XD try pitch hungry 5 in prop from drone XD
At about 13:06 in this video:
At least it was NOT an ALLIGATOR...🤭
Your center of gravity is to far back that’s why it starts skipping or bouncing as you hit full throttle so maybe turtle guy would actually optimize it
I suddenly want gumbo...
Hi bro, i really liked your videos, my question to you is what type of degree you have:- mechanical, electrical, or electronics engineer
Please sir it will help me a lot
As a mechanical engineer, I really think he's an electrical engineer.
I don't know many mechanical engineers with oscilloscopes.
But do not worry about that. If you like what he's doing and want to do that, you need to invest more time learning on your own.
Practice is better than uni.
I bet he probably went to Starfleet Academy but became disillusioned, hence the piracy.
his dry attitude is what makes it great. even at its most foolish its still science
loctite on thermoplastics no bueno.
Hey, I found your channel via the DIY CNC you made and must say, it's really impressive what you're doing. I have a quick question though, how do you reckon one is able to get into electronics, prototyping and so on. I've been really interested and I also found a makerspace near me [so I don't need to buy a bazillion expensive tools], but I genuinely do not know where to start. Do you have any ressources on where to start, or is it more of an "Find an idea, work out the rest along the way" kinda thing?
Try making an H2O splitter through ionization around 3kHz, 10 kV, inserting atomized water between the coils and using a car spark plug system with PWM on the 12V side to generate the 3kHz. Measure consumption x H output.
🤔🙄. That's not at all how water splitting works. Even if that did split anything it would just immediately recombine.
Play the Gator song by Jerry Reed! For the air boat theme.
mh da water cannon is a good idea to get a revers speed XD
Add a hydrofoil
Does anyone know what CAD software that is?
What's all the black stuff on your z-axis threads? Are the screws gunked up and this this causing all your weird bands in your prints?
do you have the files for the fan blade? also some of the files are different than what shows in your video, like the mount for the fans. i noticed it has holes for the wiring and things like that. i have printed just about everything to complete this project but am a little worried i wont be able to finish it correctly. i was going to order the electronic parts you have on your video but was concerned that i might not be able to finish it since i cant find the fan blades.
That's not fusion 360 is it?
try ducted piezo flap thruster, and/or electrostatic vacuum balloon, aluminium party balloon
flywheel is better than li-ion or lifepo, in all ways, 300Wh/kg and more energy density, it has integrated motor-generator, to match the electric load, easier to do, just a vertical maglev bearing opposite discs, on the bottom
energy storage metric: S=E/m=(pi^2)*(r^2)*(f^2) [J/kg], at about r=1m, and f=at least 333Hz, the specific energy comes 300Wh/kg+
btw, slap bendy transistors (relays) are the best!
dont shoot anyone in the eye
@@Jkauppa whoa man you're so far from comprehensible for me 😂
What software did you use to design the boat?
How is the arduino playing the audio at 9:54 ?
I am only seeing an SD Card reader but no dedicated audio/mp3 playback chip. Do you play 1-bit waveforms directly out of a GPIO?
Yeah. It's really terrible.
@@HyperspacePirate i think its pretty cool. did you use a library for that? would be useful as very simple sfx for some projects
Your best bet would probably be to just pull the guts out of a bluetooth speaker if you want something you can control remotely.
i need a 3d printer.
Very interesting project! The boat seems a bit tail heavy - if better weight distribution is not possible, you could try to compensate by tilting slightly the angle of the propellers. This might also prevent that oscillatory jumping at high speed.
Hey man can you do a setup video for example the type of 3d printer you have, the filaments u use and the pc you have to handle your projects. Or if you want you could just comment since I assume it would be easier
It's a year later and I don't see any racing videos.
Was looking forward to seeing some footage from the danger zone.
Which software you use for design?
Your projects are some of the coolest on all of UA-cam!
Does the jet of water serves any purpose ?
Cool project!. But I dont get the front water cannon. It is needed for some basic function or it is just a fancy add?
Loved the Danger Zone bit, i hope it's an Archer reference
But what about the submarine?
