Thanks very much for this video. I followed your instructions earlier today in our downstairs toilet and it worked a treat. I had been dreading doing the job, because I thought I'd have to disconect the radiator from the system and remove it from the wall completely. I would never ever have thought of doing what you showed us.
    Again, many, many thanks.👍

I usually take the whole radiator off and disconnected from the water flow. This allows you to empty the silt from the radiator and when it goes back on, it makes them more efficient as the flow is much better, especially with older setups.

Don't forget to count the number of turns when shutting off the valve. If the heating system had been previously balanced it is important to use the same number of turns when re-opening the valve.

This solution is feasible if you have the movement on the 'tails' . Alternatively, drain the radiator fully and completely remove it from the supports, then decorate with it removed. It also gives the opportunity to 'flush' the 'gunk' from the radiator after removal.
On modern builds, the pipes are polypropylene (plastic) and are fully flexible. This allows the coupled radiator to be lifted off the mounting brackets and to be pulled away from the wall, but it has to be supported at a similar level.

ALWAYS use two spanners one on each nut to loosen the TRV and lock shield or you may break the joint.

And you have alluded to the real problem with this method. There is no way of knowing if too much pressure will be exerted on an elbow under the floorboards until a large damp patch appears on the ceiling of the room below. For the sake of a few quid for a couple of radiator capping thumbs, it is better to be safe than sorry.
