if you want the unaltered version of the star wars trilogy thats even better than the despecialized edition, i recommend the project 4k77, 4k80, and 4k83 versions that are taken from actual film prints and cleaned up to 4k resolution. its an ongoing project thats been going on for years and its still being updated.
I did a series of Star Wars movie screenings at the local public library. We had the license to show the first few star wars movies...and since the license doesn't specify what format I showed the de-specialized versions. I do own the DVD set with the laserdisk version in it ect. Fun times. It's amazing that it was all younger people that showed up. I assumed it would all be dudes in their 30s, 40s and 50s.
Before the 3 hour cut of Superman the movie was released on DVD, Superman fans did the same. They pulled from all sources to make the longest cut possible. I finally acquired one about a year before the official DVD was released
I'd be surprised if you guys haven't heard of 4K77, 4K80, & 4K83. I don't know how much more authentic and definitive you can get when it comes to the og trilogy but those have pretty much become the standard

The deal breaker with LDs were that you had to flip the discs over. Like a record. It totally removes you from the experience halfway through!
They released the THX remaster on Laserdisc. Phantom menace was the last one on Laserdisc. And it still has that weird young Yoda puppet. I collect laserdiscs for the artwork but a lot of the movies are unaltered from their theatrical release. Finding random movies I've never heard of for 3 bucks is a lot of fun. Most I've spent was 90 for The Wizard.
From what I understand, Disney can't unilaterally release the OT (and perhaps the PT) without explicit permission from George, as he retained many of those rights.
One thing about laserdiscs that isn't well known is that they've become extremely valuable time capsules for the preservation of original pcm mono tracks, which can be superior to near-field Dolby Digital Atmos DTS ES Whiz-Bang stereo remixes found on modern releases, especially as it relates to center channel speech. It's gotten so bad that streaming services like Amazon often have a dialogue boost option. Unfortunately, assembling a proper sound setup is getting increasingly difficult, as it requires a specialized AC-3 Dolby Digital decoder along with an amp, but when all the parts are in place, it's amazing.
So, while the PQ of laserdiscs is fairly bad when compared to something like Blu-ray, it's the sound encoding which makes them enduring. A lot of Japanese discs also had different edits of various movies, making them doubly valuable. And not all laserdisc titles have been carried-over into modern formats, making them triply valuable.
This is pure lasersex! Lovely. My dad used to have a small collection of laserdiscs when I was growing up. It was sad because we had a house flood later down the road and some of the best ones got ruined. I love that the ones you have there are the non-special edition versions.
For a time in the early 90s I was REALLY into laserdiscs - it was just the highest quality format at the time, before the onset of DVDs. The format had some cool features like multiple audio tracks, and was the place to get widescreen versions of movies. While a limited market, there are actually a lot of LD releases spanning over about two decades. That includes over 350 from Criterion - it's the format where they started doing their special features including commentary tracks.
Also 3:07 how often will I get the chance to mention this, but the CED format is completely insane. Unlike laserdiscs, it used a stylus, like a vinyl record. RCA somehow thought was a good idea. The disks stay inside the sleeves. You insert the whole thing into the player and the internals of the machine take the vinyl out of the sleeve and start playing the movie. Crazy!

I would say the 4K77 project is THE way to watch original unedited in 4K Star Wars. But despecialize edition is iconic.
There are also 4k 35mm scans available online
Harmy had said that the 4K77, 4K80, and 4K83 projects completely eclipsed what he created. They used actual film reel as their source.
There were chapters, depended on the format of the disc and capability of the player. There were also autoflippers, and dual well autoflippers so you wouldn't have to get up at all. And "HD" (different format) on laserdisc but that was japan only, the MUSE format. It's an analog format, so output quality can vary wildly on player. It's also nearly as old as VHS, it had a long life, just at the high end. Like jazz or classical recordings on 1/4", rare the studio to release something on it.
They also rot! which puts the brakes on for a lot of collectors, unless they just want decoration. Most of them will die from rot.

None of the changes would have anything to do with whether or not Marcia sees any royalties from Star Wars, because she is still credited as one of the three editors in every version. Seems more likely that Iger and Lucas came to an agreement to not release them.

You absolutely can skip chapters on a laserdisc, the same way you can on DVD, there's literally chapter listings on most laserdisc sleeves, and the resolution is higher than VHS. And there is a massive community of people that collect laserdiscs. There is a better version of the Star Wars movies on Laserdisc in the "Definitive Collection" box set, that is where a lot of the "despecialized editions" originally came from

I remember watching laser discs at my aunt and uncles place, and they had bought this expensive laser disc that had two lasers in it so it could flip from one side to the other and it would make this insanely loud fucking sound. We had a couple of stores (Laser Land being the one I remember best) on Long Island, and I remember the changeover to DVD feeling like it was overnight. One day everything was laser disc, the next it was all DVD haha. It was crazy.
I have......the trilogy BIG BOX edition... it's HEAVY and still crisp as hell

In 2002, they released the original trilogy on dvd as a second disk to the special edition dvds. I would guess that's higher quality but maybe not

The true highest quality Non-special/original Trilogy is on a DVD release of theboriginal trilogy they did after Revenge of the Sith

Well those were still just the Laserdisc transfers put on DVD. Technically no better quality-wise.
There are movies and anime that have their best transfers trapped on Laserdisc for time immemorial. John Woo's pre-hollywood films are a major example.
The Mortal Kombat laser disc has more bonus features on the other side of the disc than the DVD release.
4K77 got Harmy beat. Despecialised was amazing but scanned from the original film is best.
I have that whole batman crt set with the DVD player, CD player, and radio. Got the whole thing for only $100
i rememer in 7th grade back in 99 our school had a laser disc player to watch these scientific type type videos i was impressed by what i called these huge CDs and thought it was the coolest thing ever

I recall reading somewhere (and it could easily be wrong info) that one of the things Disney agreed to when buying Lucasfilm was that they wouldn't "despecialize" the OT.

Pretty sure George selling Lucas Film & SW indicates a contract saying explicitly SE changes stay. Personally, I think it's an overblown and widely misunderstood topic about the OT.
I wanted to ask also, have you guys seen Rick Worley's How to Watch Star Wars, Part Two: The Special Editions Are the Movies, Get Over It video? I think it's genuinely an eye opener about why I think it's not a big deal how SW was treated by George. Lots of insightful information regarding the changes being there but started at first being more due to different mono or stereo formats. Before being more tweaks and specific additions from the SE type of branding.
I watched a laser disc version of the OT first before SE so I know the changes aren't a huge deal tbh. I think there are more egregious film edits than George's SE from 2004 or 2011. But I do enjoy your guy's videos whenever I'm bored and need something to listen to. So I figured it be interesting to ask.

The theory I subscribe to is that Lucas wouldn't re-release the original cut of Star Wars because he'd owe royalties to his ex-wife who edited it. Marcia Lucas, who by the way received an Academy Award for her work on Star Wars. George has never received an Academy Award for Star Wars. So, maybe there's an agreement he stipulated with Disney that they couldn't either because he hates his ex-wife?
Also, a restored original version has to exist. In the DVD special features for the first release boxset of the special edition. George talks about taking the old film and restoring as a basis for the special edition.

The extreme hatred for the Lion King remake is in part due to things you mentioned like being a pointless retelling and the animals not emoting, but I think it's also driven by animators and animation enthusiasts online who really hate how, outside of anime and maybe some French stuff, 2D animated features are basically a totally dead medium, and this remake seems almost like it's trying to memory hole the original.
Also there's a pretty funny deepdive by YMS on why the new one sucks, it goes into all the behind the scenes nonsense and some of the bizarre filmmaking decisions.
The best LD version are the THX mastered ones. Those are going to be hardly better than a VHS copy

Am not a Star Wars fan but seeing a Red Cow discussion on LD meant I clicked! Have had experience with film restoration and also pulling elements for DVD bonus features and extended editions. The original versions must exist outside of a neg in some interpositive form or even just an archival version in Fox or Disney’s vaults along with the original neg. They would literally just have to pull one of those versions again (as they would have definitely scanned the neg in 2K in the 90s and then 4K in the 2000s) to make a new digital composite to do the work. Much like how Blade Runner may have a Final Cut, the neg for the theatrical cut still sits in the WB vault (and finding the neg for the cut scenes in the Final Cut was a miracle as WB’s material accounting from that era was not great at best) So to bring back an de specialized version of Star Wars would not necessitate a Apocalypse Now Redux neg re-edit so it’s definitely down to Lucas agreements.

I'm surprised to hear Frankie say that. The Lion King remake has decidedly worse acting and music than the original. James Earl Jones sounds SO old and weak, compared to the original. There's no wonder or magic to the visuals, technically impressive though they may be. Doesn't touch the beauty of the 2D aesthetic of the original.

Lucas claimed that in order to make the Special Editions he had to make permanent alterations to the original archival negatives of the original trilogy, and because of that the original film negatives "don't exist anymore".
I don't know how true that is, because Lucas has a history of making misleading comments and rewriting his history.
Like when he made an announcement that Lucasfilm was going to release the original versions of the films for the first time on DVD, they would be included in a special anniversary double DVD release of the Special Editions,
... then when the release happened, the version that they included of the original versions, was this weird Pan and Scan version that was Pillar Boxed and the audio was in Mono!
... like literally the worst version you could imagine of the original films.
Lucas was also working on replacing the puppet Yoda from Empire and Return, with the digital version from Revenge of the Sith, right up until he sold Lucasfilm to Disney.
That's where that weird "Mac Klunky" line from Greedo comes from on the version of A New Hope on Disney Plus, as it's a remnant of the additions that Lucas was constantly adding.
