Around 1964 I remember seeing the Frank Ifield/Beatles album in the local dime store. But naturally I passed on it, because I had no idea who Frank Ifield was and wasn't going to waste full-price money on half a Beatles album.

I recall that also. On VJ records. Did not sucker for it. $4 was a lot of $$$ then.

"and I received an email from someone called Julian, whose father used to be..."
Did anybody else expect that sentence to finish "in the Beatles"?
Great video - a real revelation about the numbering of white albums. You do realise though that you now have to start an enormous database to catalogue them all, and we all send you photos of our copies for you to collate...

The Rockaway Records bag at 1:45
That was MY record store growing up (the Mesa, AZ location)- it was one of maybe five music stores my family and I went to every weekend. This was in the early 90’s so we were only buying cassettes and cds at this time, but I actually met Peter Criss from Kiss at this store and he signed a Kiss vinyl record for me. Good times.

Its so funny that in Colombia in the 60’s the national record companies were subject to capitol recordings, and when they released the beatles records here, they nicknamed them “ the singing brooms”, because of their famous haircut hahaha

I have all 12 studio albums .. plus the Past Masters album .. plus the Magical Mystery Tour album .. plus The Silver Beatles including Pete Best with Tony Sheridan .. plus Beatles Live in Hamburg .. plus the Anthology albums which include the first recordings of ‘In spite of all the danger’ & Buddy Holly’s ‘That’ll be the day’ plus the “new” songs ‘Real Love’ & ‘Free as a bird’ .. the question is do I have every Beatles song on vinyl ? I think so (excluding live albums & compilations having these same songs) but I’d love to hear Andrews take on this..

I don't have a LOT of Beatles rarities but, there just might be one or two that I've forgotten about since I haven't had easy access to my records in nearly 4 years!
I have one of the original Christmas flexis, either number 6 or 7.
I bought a copy of "Introducing..." in the late `70's from about $3.00 and found out years later that its worth a few hundred.
I have the singles they did on MGM and Atco.
I have a Beatles break-in that was made by their fan club in the late `70's. I believe it's just called, "Reunion" on one side the flip has, "Love Of The Loved".
Although I don't have a hard copy, a friend of mine that did allowed me to record it for my break-in collection. As far as I know, it's INSANELY rare and only that one copy exists! It's an Australian break-in that was probably made around `65 or `66 and only made it as far as the acetate which, when I saw it and possibly got the very last playing of it ever on tape, because when I played it, the grooves were literally fall off of it!! My friend showed me the list of the various sales it had over the decades and, as far as I can tell, he paid $3000 for it and then sold it a few years ago for, probably, $5000. The flip side has two actual mid `60's Beatles songs on it. The A-side is a very "psychedelic" sounding break-in that uses clips from various Dickie Goodman singles to ask the questions posed to The Beatles and the answers are from culled from Beatles record that were available up to that time. I've only heard it once or twice about 12 years ago when Frank brought it to my house to let me record it so, I haven't had the chance to check which Dickie Goodman records were used to even verify that it WAS from the mid `60's! He'd been making break-ins (80, total) from July 1956 up `til his death (suicide) in `89. Anyway, I'm not sure if the artist or the title was called, "Gases For The Masses". As the recording has nothing to do with gas, from what I recall, I guess that's the artist.
As I've said yesterday on a previous video, I've got 4 of their British early albums on open reel, 2-track mono; With, Hard Days Night, Revolver (I think) and Sgt. Pepper's and would like to get the other mono reels to complete the collection.
I have 2 Strawberry Fields Forever flexis that I'm pretty sure are either 8" or 10". One is sky blue, the other is either red or black.
I have a DVD of The Beatles cartoon series.
The entire "Let It Be" recording sessions.
Back in the late `80's or early `90's pre-Anthology, Capitol released two collections of Beatles singles on coloured vinyl. Each set has possibly 10 or 12 records and they were pressed for jukeboxes only. I've got both sets. There was another single of that sort pressed before that that was also on coloured vinyl. I have that, too.
There was a bootleg single pressed about 20 or 30 years ago using the Capital swirl label from the `60's but the label is listed as being Capitalism (or was it, Capitalist?) and, although it doesn't list an artist on either side, it IS The Beatles and one side has the shortest song from the white album (not including, "Can You Take Me Back"), "Wild Honey Pie" and the longest song on the album, "Revolution 9" on the flip.
And, up until about 4 years ago, I had a display "tray" for the second new Beatles Anthology single from the `90's.
As I said, there might be a few others I've forgotten about.

This might be my favorite video of yours, I got a huge kick out of seeing these rare records. I’ve never seen a white album that had the same number as another copy. They were so largely mass produced that I wouldn’t expect it to be easy to find 2 matching covers

  • @RedVynil
    @RedVynil Рік тому

Starting at least in the `80's when I got my first real stereo, I did the same thing: buy the album, record it to cassette, play the tape and leave the album in NM condition in my racks and MAYBE use it again if I needed something from it for another project I was working on or if the tape needed recorded again. So, of my nearly 4000 albums, pretty much anything post `85 is in M- condition...unless I bought it used. But, even with most of the used ones, which I'd get at Jerry's (R.I.P.!), they, too, were in at least NM condition!
I've got at least 6 copies of the white album: my first I bought in Gary, Indiana in `69 while visiting my cousins for the first time. About 8 years later, during the coloured vinyl craze, I picked up 3 more copies ion white vinyl. They were pressed in France, nearest I can tell. I bought one for a friend of mine and I never saw him after buying it so, I still have that copy. Two of those 3 are still in factory condition. About another 8 or 10 years later, I found a top-loader and bought that. I THINK I have a German pressing but, I'd have to get to my records to find out, they''re in storage 2 miles from here. and I bought the 50th anniversary edition last summer with a lot of session outtakes on it. This time, I bought the CD version because my stereo's ion storage, too and who knows when I can get all that stuff up here? I also have one that's probably a bootleg, it's a one record "set" called, "The Off-White Album". It has a few more outtakes. Mostly alternate versions of about half of the songs.

I have an oddity that was made in Turkey. Bought it in Turkey in 1980 maybe early 1981 while stationed there for one year in the Air Force. The cover image is "Yesterday and Today" but the title is Today and Yesterday. Side1 are six 1970s solo recordings and side 2 are seven Beatles recordings. Date created is 1980 because Side 1 dates the songs from 1970-1980. At the bottom of the center label is "her hakkı mahfuzdur" translates as all rights reserved". The record label is Meteor 1096

My most precious Beatle find was a near mint copy of "My Bonnie/The Saints" on the green MGM picture sleeve that you briefly showed in your video. On the back is the record store sticker (74c). I found it at a thrift store inside a kid's personal locker box. Inside the box was a bunch of old 45s from the 60's, all of them in very good condition with their sleeves intact. This was sometime in the early/mid 90's. I paid $1 for each of the singles.

Another not-to-be-missed video. I’d like the infos on the numbering system of the White Album… May
I just point out that the sky blue label copy of Beatles in Italy was the only one to be pressed in Stereo in 1981 and then finally deleted. More interesting, the date printed in the run-out groove of this version was 09-12-1980…..

Ciao Quirico, I’m not really sure. Copies were available in the record stores until late 80’s. However, what it is sure, it was not reprinted and all copies I have checked carried that sad date in the run-out groove…

Great vid as usual Andrew - Not sure how rare this is but back in the 80s when I was working for Our Price - we sold loads of Sgt Peppers CDs on release but had one come back as a mispress - weirdly it played Rubber Soul. I bought it of course and reaplced the customers copy. What I never understood is that the Sgt Pepper CD was released on it's own - whereas the Rubber Soul CD was in a group of 3 (if I remember correctly) - so how did a Rubber Soul CD get pressed up as Sgt Pepper? I also have what I think is the first Beatles Bootleg CD - the disc itself says it is by the Carpenters (!) but plays the Cavern Club rehearsals. The dealer told me that it said the Carpenters as this was the only way they could get the disc pressed - if it had said the Beatles no-one would have touched it - bought it in 1986 if I remember correctly.

The Beatles' CDs were released two or three at a time until _Sgt. Pepper_ which came out by itself. So _Rubber Soul_ and _Revolver_ were both released on the same day, but as separate albums, not packaged together.

The Australian 'Please Please Me' LP had the first lot housed in UK covers which were 500. The early black/gold mono labels had the credit "MADE IN AUSTRALIA FOR THE PARLOPHONE CO. LTD., SYDNEY, NSW" written in a semi-circular rim print at the bottom (but both the ones in the UK made covers and the ones in the early Australian made covers contained this version of the label and were the same pressings). The second black/gold mono label had the credit "MADE IN AUSTRALIA BY E.M.I. (AUST.) LIMITED" written horizontally across the middle (as was also the case with all black/gold mono copies of "With the Beatles"). The first two Beatles albums in Australia both came out only showing the Mono catalogue number on the back of the Aussie printed covers. Then early in 1964 the stereo catalogue numbers were added to the covers.
PS: It's important to remember that both of the 'Please Please Me' mono LPs that came out in 1963 contained the exact same LP pressings with labels. It was only the cover that was changed to an Australian made one. Now some people will swap LPs and put them in a UK made cover to fool buyers or collectors. I see a lot of swapping happening on eBay and also at record fairs. So people need to be careful.

Thanks again, Andrew, for this interesting video. I have never had the patience or money to go for real rarities. When recreating my Beatles vinyl collection I have tried to find curiosities rather than rarities also trying not go buy duplicate copies of the same album. Firstly I've collected both the UK and US catalogue trying to get each album with a different label design. So my Please please me is on the golden Parlophone (the repressing from the 2000's) and Beatles for sale on yellow Parlophone. From Capitol I have the rainbow, green, red, orange and purple labels. Secondly I've tried to get some of the albums with labels they did not originally have, Beatles second album, Revolver and Magical mystery tour with Apple label, Hey Jude with Capitol rainbow and the White album and Abbey road on Parlophone (the 1980's DMM pressings). As an icing on the cake I got some international pressings: Hard Day's Night as the French "4 garcons dans le vent" Odeon pressing and The Beatles Greatest on German Odeon. I am still trying to get a Spanish red Odeon label pressing of the Yellow Submarine. So nothing to rare and expensive, but fun stuff all the same. I am still wondering if I should I get the US Hard Day's Night on the 1970's United Artists label and maybe Let it be on greek orange and red EMI label...

Great video as always. The only rare Beatles things that i have are a graded/slabbed Beatles Plaks card put out by Topps in ‘64. Believe that it was a test set, meaning it wasn’t as mass produced as the other Beatles trading card sets.
Also of note is a white picture slide of the 4 lads on a beach (which has a “copyright apple” indicator stamped on it) as well as 3 undeveloped negatives from their press conference for their performance at the Hollywood Bowl in ‘64.
Don’t think it counts but for solo Beatles, i have a presumably unheard interview by Paul in regards to his Paul is Live album housed in a “emi” branded cassette.

I have a Beach Boys "All Summer Long" album with a Meet the Beatles label on one side. In 1964 I bought what I think is a German import Polydor album of the Beatles as the Beat Bros. with all1 the songs they recorded with Bert Kaemfert. My white album number is lm+. I have a set of Polaroid color photographs taken by someone from the audience during an interview with the Beatles in Los Angeles in 1966. (It's almost like a fingerprint :) or a voice recording made in an acoustic way.) As well as some original photos of the Beatles. I bought them in Atlanta about 15 years ago at a home sale.

I think so (excluding live albums & compilations having these same songs) but I’d love to hear Andrews take on this…

Nice video AGAIN Andrew. I nearly sent pictures of my original 1962 UK red Parlophone love me do/ps I love you. Which both sides have the 1 mother and g stamper for ps I love you and the p stamper for love me do. Sounds great. Is that good enough for these collections? I didn't think it was Andrew so didn't bother.
Also have you ever seen a UK black and yellow please please me with little astronaut boots prints on each side over Parlophone letters? They look like little silver metal embossed footprints like Neil Armstrongs on the moon.
P.S. Well done for actually getting some real Beatles music in the video finally. Thanks Andrew.

Great video. These albums and singles were created in the very recent past. In the modern age. Yet already facts are lost such as the exact method used to number the white album. Your videos are reaching out to people who know all sorts of obscure facts that would otherwise get lost. Now is the time for all this to be recorded because the people who were there are dwindling.

Really interesting video! Now that's some intriguing information on the WA UK numbers. But if these sleeves were also exported to Scandinavia, they must have shared the UK numbers' pool, mustn't they? I wonder what other countries might be in question.
I can only share what my research found out on the numbering of German toploader covers (Nicolaus GmbH). These were also used in several other European countries, like France, Benelux or Italy, and indeed shared the same numbers pool.
What did change in the course of time, was the style, and that went by ranges.
No. 0000000 to 0125000 were printed in black ink, with slightly cut-off leading zero, in a small serifless font.
No. 0125000 to 0280000 were printed in grey ink, in a larger serifless font.
No. 0280000 and upwards were not printed at all, but debossed blindly, in the same font as the grey ink ones.
Around 1970 the number of digits was reduced from 7 to 6. The debossed numbering remained until at least the late 80s and the digital-sourced DMM version, though numbers were restarted inbetween. Around 1981, the debossed font was changed for the serif font very similar to UK toploader one (still debossed), in 1984 it reverted back to serifless (and remained so).

The strangest Beatles collection I saw was in an antique mall here in Canada. They must've had over a dozen copies of the She Loves You 45 on Swan. I did take a photo when I found about 7 or 8. But kept finding more while digging through maybe 2000 45s. All of them were in rough shape. Finding one is cool. But to keep finding them was just crazy. And just to put it here. They wanted $4 each for them.
