The day I got it, my hands were shaking like xmas morning as I pulled GET BACK from the box. 50 years of bootlegs and searching. To finally hold I t in my hands was almost surreal. The only letdown was the label. It's says GET BACK. THE 1969 GLYN JOHNS MIX. yeah well we know that. Bu tthats not the name. It should read GET BACK, period. But as this guy's said, Apple doesn't consult the fans. They should.
My big concern is that a lot of people are not going to get Disney+ to get the documentary but they want the documentary anyway. I am hoping Apple will release it the entire documentary with bonus footage to the general public as a Blu-ray set
Along with a companion soundtrack album featuring the full-length rooftop concert, similar to how they re-released an updated Live At The Hollywood Bowl along with Eight Days A Week.
I completely agree. I'm not subscribing to a yearly service to watch one film. I was hoping to get to see it on the large screen in theatres. Disney exclusive is the reason I haven't seen it yet. Personally I would have rather had it been a two hour movie if it meant giving it a proper release.
I may be in the minority, But I wanted to hear isolated Spector's orchestra as one of the tracks, like Something's strings on Abbey Road SDX. I Me Mine has great trumpets.
I've been digging a pygmy for almost 52 years. I just love the energy and spontaneity of the "Let It Be" album. I remember seeing a big stack of both the "Let It Be" and "Yellow Submarine" albums in the Woolworth's bargain basement in 1975. They were selling them for 99 cents. I bought 5 copies of each and handed them out to friends. I will get this. Anything related to the Liverpudlian moptops I want. I have all of their albums including the American ones like "Beatles '65" and "Something New."
My thoughts on the ''wrong Get Back mix'' being issued are these: I've been a minor producer and a happy engineer for centuries (so it feels), and made my own checks track by track from the old underground boots (69 & 70) of Glyn Johns' mixes and, once re-sequenced and pitch-corrected, compared them to each of the 2021 offerings. All are identical. Even the 'For You Blue' comment on it being the re-recorded vocal version is not true. (re-recorded Jan 8th 1970, with the 'Elmore James has nothing on this..' etc). This version is found on L.I.B. Naked and the L.I.B. album itself. Very different from 69 & 70 mixes [which are identical]. I worked with the editor of Beatles Monthly for many years on this sort of thing. Removing/repairing glitches or improving sound quality by remastering has never counted as a different mix, has it? This is just a case of using the best post-mastering available. My sincerest good wishes to all. There are always some of us that believe in fairydust - and why not? Barty
I agree entirely. Its very obvious that the vocal overdubs are what we hear on let it be and naked, and the 69 and 70 mixes are identical. It's about time that people with oscilloscopes should turn them off and listen to the music instead. My only small gripe is that they mixed out the feedback in Teddy boy
I forked out my money for the vinyl box as soon as it became available. I've listened to The Beatles practically to death for the past 40 years since I was knee high, but I STILL get excited by special releases with stuff I've never heard before. What can I say, I'm pretty chuffed!
For me, I have 2 issues with buying the box set. 1: The price, which is why I've not bought any of these new deluxe special box sets (although I am tempted by a few and will probably get them eventually). 2: There's stuff I've heard on bootlegs for years that I'd love to have better quality versions of, but they aren't included. Based on the tracklisting, it seems they focused more on alternate versions of songs that were on the original album rather than including all the songs that didn't make it. That was always the interesting stuff for me. Songs like Madman, Suzy's Parlour, Watching Rainbows and various others, George did a bunch of Bob Dylan songs acoustic but on the bootlegs it's buried in everyone else just chattering away so it would have been cool to have those cleaned up so we could actually hear George.
@@gettinhungrig8806 A Yoko vocal would have been the ultimate insult when there's so many Beatles songs they left off. As for what was said in the video about John, I think they're just his opinions, not meant to be taken as gospel. John by his own admission wasn't the strongest musician in the group and was mostly playing bass on those songs because they wanted to keep it as live as possible and Paul was on piano, George was on lead, so John was left with the bass. It has also been well documented that John was a bit standoffish as he felt the others weren't as accepting of Yoko being there all the time as they'd liked. John doesn't play on I Me Mine at all. The earlier versions he decided he'd rather dance with Yoko and the album version he wasn't even there. So there is some truth to it.
I balked at the price originally but thought the set was worth the money. I don't think they'd be able to get the rights to Dylan songs much less any of the 1950s chestnuts they rolled out. I liked the alt songs because they picked the best material for those two discs. The bootlegs were always a tough slog. This has material I'll want to go back to for years.
@@gettinhungrig8806 did you watch the Get Back series? Billy Preston became a major part of the sessions and ignited a spark in the Beatles that hadn't caught before Billy Showed up. In fact Preston is the only artist who has shared the bill and listed on the lable of Beatles records.
I'm keen to hear the Glynn Johns demo. Worth the price of admission. I've been shocked to realize the number of projects he was involved with that I have always liked: Rolling Stones up to Black & Blue, Mad Dogs & Englishmen, Who's Next, Harvest, Rita Coolidge, Delayney & Bonnie on Tour with Clapton, Eric's Slow Hand, Backless & I Still Do, the early Eagles records, and more recent sessions with Linda Ronstadt to name a few.
This was my first album and the one that turned me into a BEATLES FREAK! My older sister bought it for the title track and abandoned it after a month and was on to The Carpenters or whatever was next.I put it on and was treated to a life changing religious experience that continues 53 years later upon hearing Lennons voice on Across The Universe.I will always hold this album in high esteem.
Andrew your analysis of these sets is incredible!! I really enjoy your videos and as a new Beatles fan myself, they are helpful and very informative! I did purchase the vinyl set and so far have been very happy with it...
Thanks for the effort you put in your videos. The quality of production & editing is incredible. I look forward to new content on this channel every week. I'm not a very prolific Beatles collector but I definitely enjoy watching your reviews & unboxings. Keep up the amazing work.
I bought both the CD and LP boxed sets. And let me tell you, I am happy I have it all now being a collector and a huge fan. I even have the Rooftop Concerts bootleg on CD. Great video like always, so thank you!
Well I’ll have to wait and see. I’ve always enjoyed the Glyn Johns mix and liked Let It Be as a whole. And having collected the boots over the years really made me want to see more film footage of which there was a lot of in bootleg form. To see clear clean versions will be great! Great job on this edition. Makes me want to hear for myself! Thanks! Looking forward to Collection of Oldies too!
it´s been a time saturation of info and opinions on this release but your analysis is superb as always. i´m really happy with the sound and the extras.
Very nice. I purchased the same two packages and can’t argue with any of your points, well done. Your production quality is improving as well; I enjoy the retro film look you are using (and thankfully not OVER using) on your graphics. I always look forward to your videos.
Hi, Andrew. There's a song called "Palace of The King of Birds" that was recorded during the Let It Be sessions that would be worth checking out on YT if you haven't heard it already; its a slow, dreamy 5 to 6 minute instrumental jam with a sort of early Pink Floyd vibe to it; should have been included on the new box set but wasn't.
I can’t believe your videos are getting even better and better!! Wonderful review! I’m exited for both the get back film, and your video on a collection of Beatles oldies (but goldies!)! I will place the vinyl edition of the box set on the top of my Christmas wish list! My super kind aunt, who lives in the us, bought me the target edition of the get back book (with the 4 prints :)), so I’ll be getting that one as well! :)
Another great video Andrew. I will pass on this box set personally as I have on the Pepper, The Beatles and Abbey Road boxes. The reason being is that having the original copies of the the LP, the 87 cd and the 2009 cd, I can't find a good enough reason to keep on buying the same albums when I can just stream the new content on Spotify. I rarely listen to new mixes or sessions more than a couple of times out of curiosity anyway. What the Beatles approved back in the day sonically has always been good enough for me.
Thank you for (continuing) posting HQ videos that strike a good balance between nitty gritty detail, and overviews that allow others to gather sufficient understanding to interpret the contents meaningfully. Plus they're engaging.
Thanks for taking the time and detailed effort to produce these videos. I like the design of the CD set and how it can be displayed to show either set of portraits. Apart from the audio, I buy these sets for the books, as they contain studio documentation and tape box notes that can't always be found elsewhere.
Based on your unboxing presentation last week I went with the vinyl. Like you mentioned, the Glyn John's LP was what put it over the edge for me. It's great to have it in hand over the boot version.
What I can never understand is Apple NOT consulting Beatle experts, like yourself for instance, on how to put a package together, I've bought the vinyl 5 record package and like you said some of it is again disappointing, and after all it is US the Beatle fans they need to buy this, of course there will be new young buyers I hope, but a majority of the sales will be us old timers, I think this will be the last time I fork out £149.00 on any new remixes, unless it's something extra special
For Apple Corps, maintaining secrecy matters more than putting out a good product. If Apple had consulted with rare records dealers, "Penny Lane" (trumper ending) wouldn't have had to presented with such horrible sound quality in the "Sgt.Peppers" boxed set.
@@56dinosaur I've always thought they had a master of that mix, and that they could just plop it on when it came time to arrange the Sgt Pepper set. I was really shocked when I heard what I heard.
Yes these box sets are bloody well expensive! If they are going to charge way too much money they might at least give you what the fans, collectors, and experts want. Its poppycock if you ask me.
Loved the review Andrew! I agree with you about I Me Mine. The acoustic guitar in the right channel is now buried and yes the original bite is lacking. Other than that, I like what Giles has done. Or hasn't done for that matter. :)
all stereo remixes were better than the original stereo mixes, but the mono mixes of the white album and st. pepper are still and will always be the best mixes of that albums, mainly because they were mixed with the Beatles in the studio present back in the day. really a great new stereo mix of let it be, gotta admit that.
Highly recommended for Beatles fans. Quibbles: the book should have the title info on the spine; the EP is superfluous; and where is the rooftop concert? A proper EP at 7", with a real picture sleeve, that included the concert would have made this set perfect. It's a quibble since I'm pretty sure those recordings are coming.
Great "Coming Next" video. Very stylish. Looking forward to see it as was my first Beatles record. i'm waiting for the Get Back film before I buy anything related to it. A Blu ray of that is a must for me. As for the boxset, I'll let it be for now.
I had to return it. A lot of groove distortion in Get Back and the remix ( both in two last songs of each side) . Waiting for the replacement, let's see. Great video!
Wonderful video, again! I do own the original UK box-set and I totally agree, the very first glossy box has an amazing picture quality don't know why the current reissue hasn't. Even the red-apple vinyl! On the other hand the back cover photographs of the vinyl has been restored.. Love.
I definitely agree with your conclusion, Andrew. And I do feel a little put out that, as a CD buyer, I don't get the full-sized Glyn Johns LP. That would look so much better than the CD version. Also, I, too, wondered why they simply reproduced the EP on CD instead of putting those tracks as "extras" on one of the others. It would have been nice to have a "proper" cover for the EP. Perhaps use one of the singles covers from the time? That might have justified the separate CD. All that said, I don't know if these issues would rise to paying another $100+ for the LP set, especially since the source is digital as with the CDs. The music is what ultimately matters, and it sounds great to my ears. Excellent review. Thank you! Looking forward to next week... 😀
Thank you for the wonderful video. As the other videos they are well-made and very enjoyable. I've listened to the Nagra tapes on bootleg multiple times, but definitely had to buy this box set on CD and I LOVE it. I'm not big on new mixes but I agree that the gem in this collection is Glyn Johns Get Back LP.
I got the "Black Album" bootleg of the Get Back sessions (2 cd's) a few years ago, and for me, a person who can usually enjoy even mundane Beatle material, the black album is something to endure rather than like. Many of the songs were recorded from the movie soundtrack rather than the soundboard. I thought they did a pretty good job in this new box set of pulling together some of the best moments on the two "sessions" discs.
I purchased the vinyl set. I am 69 years old and a Beatles fan since 1964. Although with all of the Beatles LPs I have obtained through the years, I never bought Let It Be. I didnt go for the box set but the single record. Mainly I wanted to hear the new Giles Martin mix.
What a great video - I can’t help but agree with near enough everything you said here. This is the first time with these sets where it hasn’t felt like I have been snubbed for being a vinyl collector. It’s a lovely set, and I think the selection of extras is just fine and lends itself nicely to a listening experience. The original bootlegs and reels while containing some goodies that were missed, can also feel like a bit of a drag after a while, and while interesting I really don’t need them all “officially released”. For me this has been the peak of these remixes and anniversary sets overall, though I’d say the work done to Pepper does top it. I’m looking forward to the next video too.
Great video, as always! 😀 Personally I'm sticking with my 2U/2U pressing but I really like how much content has been made available with this release. Now they just need to get around to doing Revolver 😉
Sort of weird that they didn't just get an artist to recreate the source art for the title font and the apple. Really great and comprehensive look at this- thanks man!!!
I received the Let it Be boxed set for Christmas. Other than the high price, I think it is amazing. The book and the Glyn Johns Get Back album, were worth it alone.
Love your channel Andrew!! I had the opportunity to see the rooftop concert and Peter Jackson’s live link up at an I Max theater while vacationing in Florida last January. My wish is that they would have shown the roof top concert without the cut aways. The audio was breathtaking and loud!!! I’ll probably never hear it as good as I did at that I Max theatre. As far as the Get Back box set, I have the CD version and think the 5.1 surround mix is the best out of all the Giles Martin surround mixes. It’s a awesome. Usually, the surround mix is interesting but not my go to listen. On Get Back, it’s my preferred listen. I’m disappointed that they didn’t include the complete rooftop concert without cut aways on the Blu Ray disc. It would have been the extra icing on an already sweet cake. I wait patiently for a stand alone rooftop performance Blu Ray.
Thanks so much for this review Andrew! I have been absorbing this material for a week and I really do enjoy it. Of course there is always room to complain about what is missing but in the end I am grateful to get anything as we didn’t have it before. The highlight for me is the Get Back album which sounds so much better than my bootleg copy. I will hopefully be getting the Japanese version soon to compare. Looking forward to your next video about a Collection of Beatles Oldies! Take care!
Great video, Andrew! I appreciate hearing your take on this release. Still trying to understand why Apple allowed the true ‘69 Glyn Johns release in Japan and no where else.🤔
Not bought either set but I have listened to it. I like the remix a lot but felt the rest was a real let down. A full cd of Twickenham rehearsals would have been much more interesting (even with the low quality nagra soundtrack) and then a cd of Apple outtakes plus the Glyn Johns mixes. That would have been more like it! Great video as always 👍
Absolutely class vid. I couldn't make my mind up what versions to buy. I went the box set vinyl and the double CD package I need to do some more overtime it's expensive being a Beatles fan.
Great Review Andrew! You brought up some good points. I’m gonna half to pass on the box set, because I don’t feel like I need it with the Disney+ Get Back. But if I did get it I would definitely get the Vinyl set.
Another great video Andrew … I got the ‘day by day’ set over 10 years ago.. I’ve tried to listen but it’s hard without visuals. The book in the set is good, but I agree that the scrapbook style isn’t that great. Also I would have liked dates for the sessions. I have the cd set but would love a separate vinyl release for the Glyn Johns mix.
Lennon was certainly stoned for a lot of rehearsals, but his rhythm guitar work was always perfect. He was “empathetic” in his accompaniment. I love his feel for rock/pop.
Fantastic video as always Andrew! I have it on good authority that the Glyn Johns mix of I Me Mine (on the EP) was sourced from a rough acetate disc because the tape copy sadly no longer exists.
Most people are not buying because of the price being too high and the full awareness of how cheap the material is to manufacture yet record companies over price everything.
People are saying that the Glyn Johns Get Back mix in the box set is actually the 70 mix and not the 69 mix... Only the Japanese box set brings the 69 mix... Has anyone else heard about it too???
I picked up the single disc vinyl edition of the album the day it came out. The set has a lot of great stuff on it, but I really don't see a need to get the sessions albums on vinyl. Get Back and the Let It Be EP are going to be collector's items, so I have considered getting the Vinyl set down the road when I have the money for it, but the sessions discs will sit unopened.
I wasn't too jazzed about this box when it was announced (after all, Let It Be never was among my favorite Beatles albums), but the thing is, I'm a diehard nutcase fan who needs EVERYTHING. So of course I got it. And I was THRILLED when I heard it - because the sound (except that mix of "I, Me, Mine" -- and I was thinking the exact same thing: digital noise) is spectacular! In terms of content, the "white" album box is my favorite of the 50th anniversary boxes, but for sound quality, this one easily wins it for me. The thing is, this came out shortly after The Beach Boys' Feel Flows set, a 5-CD box (well, not really a box but more of a book-with-CDs-inside-it) in which they used just about every usable second of CD space. I think the list price on both the Let It Be and Feel Flows sets was the same. So yeah, for five CDs, we were getting 3 CDs worth of material. Also, the folks at Brother KNOW what the fans want. There are plenty of folks on the inside who do reach out to fans, which is why their more recent archival releases and year-end copyright extension releases have been so stellar. They know what the fans like, and they know how to push the fans' buttons. Apple, on the other hand...they don't seem to have any fan outreach at all. Their attitude seems to be: "It's The Beatles. People will gobble up anything Beatles." And just like the computer company called Apple, the Beatles' Apple does not reach out to find out what their consumers want: they TELL their consumers what they want. Now, I don't think the rooftop concert ever was considered as part of the set -- I mean, does the target audience as a whole really want to sit through just the audio of, oh, three performances of "Get Back," two performances of "Don't Let Me Down," etc.? But my thought is that the box was conceived first for vinyl, and it makes sense how it's arranged: one 12-inch disc for the new version of Let It Be, another for the Glyn Frankenstein album, two 12-inchers for the rehearsals and recording sessions, and an EP. (Although I was surprised to learn it's a 12-inch EP instead of a 7-inch.) I'm thinking that they basically took each record and turned it into a CD. It's not the first time the Apple suits did this to The Beatles: all of Let It Be...Naked [still my favorite of the various lineups to listen to the Get Back / Let It Be material] could have fit on one CD (but it worked well as a 12-inch and 7-inch on vinyl), and the "red" album could have fit on one CD instead of a (list price) $32 two-CD set.
I think the missing concert disc is a valid criticism. It’s something most people have wanted. If it’s only the film version without an accompanying vinyl sold stand alone, I can only speak for my anecdotal Disney+ experience, but I’ve yet to find a way to make it play on my duel 1229 and stack I’ve spent years putting together (and that’s my preferred way to enjoy music). Sure I can run it through the old 5.1 with the tv off, or even run the audio through my receiver (a remarkably inconvenient proposition that doesn’t seem to be worthwhile). Don’t get me wrong I’m excited to see the concert in full, but the bits on the old laser disc are the best part of the let it be film (imo). It will be amazing to get to see everything remastered and complete. In the end of the film series doesn’t coincide with a proper release of the concert on physical audio media I believe it’s as valid a criticism as any. I guess I’d understand it not being a valid criticism for you personally if you don’t care about having a nice vinyl copy of the performance, but if that’s was important to you and it’s not there are you supposed to send Apple a thank you card for Christmas for specifically excluding it? So that even after spending all this money on all these sets maybe they can release yet one further set that negates this one entirely? All in all it’s an amazing set that I’ve enjoyed completely. People have got things so wrong these days. A criticism doesn’t mean the entire thing is garbage or of no value. It means people I’ve discussed this with, and I all wanted something that isn’t there. Apple even set it up as a possibility with the marketing for the film and the way they’ve handled all the recent releases. It’s great! I’ve always loved this album and film (maybe ranking Beatles for Sale as my “worst” Beatles record, but does that mean I don’t love that album? Nope, but it does mean I haven’t listened to Mr Moonlight in over a decade). Could this set have included something that would make many fans happy and serve to make this release feel definitive (at least in its tracks if not audio preference/quality) like the recent White Album/self titled release? I believe so.
I guarantee you that bootleggers will rip audio from the Disney + rooftop concert and make a vinyl release of it. They did it with oasis unplugged in 1996, and it was a huge hit with fans and not doing the rooftop concept is a huge miss for Apple
I've ordered both the CD and the Vinyl set. One thing that disappointed me immediately was overlap. I think we all know that Abbey Road tracks were being worked upon at the time of this album. I would have preferred more from the Nagra tape reels rather than early incarnations of Abbey Road material, which should have been kept apart for the Abbey Road box set instead. Why haven't the upbeat versions of "Two of Us", Paul's "Back Seat of my Car", John's, "Child of Nature" (Jealous Guy) and even better rehearsal takes of George's "All things Must Pass" been included? Although some of this material might be slightly fragmented, it would have been more appreciated. I'm spoilt I guess, as I have a copy of the Vigotone "30 Days" bootleg. The omissions of alternative and more interesting material was an opportunity missed from this set.
I've just seen for sale, 8CDs worth of Glyn Johns' Get Back sessions. I would certainly grab an official release of this! With the terribly skimpy number of alternate takes/extra material on this latest SDE set, I'll just delay purchase until I've acquired other items on the shopping list.
I wasn't planning on getting this set, but I just found the vinyl box on eBay for just over 40 bucks! At that price, I simply couldn't resist getting it and I'm anxious to hear how everything sounds when it arrives in the mail.
Omg Andrew! That was superb review!! And the tease for the next episode really hooked me 😆 I want it now! 🤣 Years ago I downloaded a complete discography (up to 2012) including band's studio albums and collections + solo albums and collections. In George's folder there was a 2002 collection of lifetime works including rehearsals but I never got to listen to it until yesterday. There were rehearsals from around Let It Be period too, and I found it so impressive. Listening to them chatting in the studio and working out different moods of a song's intro... Magnificent. One last thing.... How did we live without you all these years?
The production quality is kicked up another notch. Just superb, Andrew. I really enjoyed listening to the vinyl box set. I wasn't blown away by the remix (actually, I thought the mixing was better on the EP than the album) but it was very good. I can also see why the Glyn Johns mix was rejected multiple times. It's a great listen but a strange one... he used, at least to my ears, clearly inferior takes on several songs. The packaging for the box set is amazing and it's HEAVY... must weight twice as much as the other box sets. Of course, much of that weight is the book which I still need to go through (I only just finished reading the Get Back book). Great video as always, Andrew! Now looking forward to the upcoming Oldies video, especially as I recently acquired a Japanese copy on red vinyl. The only other copy I have is a 70's UK pressing so it will be interesting to compare.
Thanks, Andrew, for another well thought out review. Have you compared "Get Back", Across the Universe", and "Don't Let Me Down", from the 2013 analogue mono box, to the new digital sourced 2021 vinyl box?
Hi Andrew would be great to compare the 1970/87/2003/2009/2021 albums at a later date. Another great & interesting video! BTW going out on a limb here, but to me the let it Be version on the Glyn Johns album minus the banter before & after is the best version I have heard & could have been worthy to have been put on the original final album.
Let It Be is not one of my go-to albums, but I have been playing this set over and over which I haven't done with the others. I think less is more as far as outtakes. The "jams" do nothing for me. I heard Suzy Parker on UA-cam for the first time and am glad they left it off.
Hey Andrew, I'd love to know your thoughts on Let It Be Naked. For me it's the version of the album that I most connected with. It sounds like it doesn't do too much for you. Maybe doing a video on it's conception would be worth a try?
Thank you very much for a great video it made me look at my Queen CDs collection and the differences between Island Universal music for UK and Hollywood Records for USA just in terms of attention paid to front and back cover art the Hollywood Records artwork looks like photocopies
The Glyn Johns mix of I Me Mine just makes me sad. When I heard it for the first time I geniunely thought they accidentally uploaded the wrong file or something, which is a shame because I love the Hammond organ in this mix. I was also expecting to hear Let It Be's original ghost solo from take 27a somewhere. (the one you can somewhat hear in all Let It Be versions except for Anthology, Naked and Take 28 (also known as Take 27b - the take from the Let It Be film)) And also, as many others I was also expecting to see the rooftop concert in its entirety here as well.
Some of the Glyn John mixes, specially I Me Mine, are too muddy. I'm hoping to get my hands on a japanese box set to compare them and decide which are the best mixes.
Andrew I agree there should of been more music on the CDs. And with Peter Jackson film I think they did not know how to approach the project at all they had problems back in 1969 plus fans like me had the bootlegs for years!! But I bought the 5 cd box set and I bought the stand alone album. Enjoy the review! Cheers!
This is FANTASTIC, Andrew! I agreed with everything that you said and that is why I am going for the Vinyl set. Loving the new channel logo by the way!
Great review if these two box sets. I was originally going to buy just the cd bios set to get Blu-ray. Ultimately I decided to buy both because the vinyl box set includes much better packaging (in particular GJ’ let it be vinyl). I have reasonable BluRay and 4K tv. And really enjoyed contents of Blu-ray which does have some visual content. I really liked Stereo mid and 5.1 mixes - I was though disappointed with Atmos version which added little. I am hoping that Disney will release 4K version of six hour documentary with a really good immersive 5,1 sound mix - particularly for roof top concert. I really liked 4 track ep too. I imagine that Apple will next look at revolver and rubber soul for upgrades. I note that Criterion are releasing new 4K UHD of hard days night in 2022. That should be excellent.
Very very good review of these sets, thank you Andrew.I was going to get both sets and just shell out for them on pre order but then circumstances wouldnt allow and now after your review I have decided to just get the vinyl set (for now, though im sure at some point in the future i will get the other too when i find it cheap, which may me a long while off like my white album and esher demos vinyl set and abbey road cd and bluray set which i only picked both up in the last few months for 60 and 40 british pounds which as youll know for brand new mint sealed items was very good). But genuinely your review has been the only one that had any real buyer satisfaction info because all the others just seem to be collectors just showing off what they have and literally just showing us the items and saying they like it and saying how they would prefer to have had something extra in the box too. (THATS NOT A REVIEW,IS IT?) But yours is first rate my friend,KUDOS TO YOU.THANK YOU.
I am looking forward to the review of the Oldies but goldies from 1966 in your next video. I have a copy in glorious mono, I agree it sounds a bit dull but glad I have it as you don't really see about now
I’ve enjoyed the second Glenn Johns cut of the album for years, and it’s nice to have a slightly cleaner version than my old CD bootleg (that looks identical to the one shown here). I enjoy a lot in this version of the album. It’s a small gripe but the one thing that I really miss is George’s guitar is turned down in For You Blue, but does nic the added studio chatter in John lap steel solo; which I’m mostly indifferent on.. but that is one of George’s subtle beautiful sounding guitar songs. It’s simple, but a favorite of mine. Bringing that rhythm guitar up a bit was one of Specters positive additions
3:58 Hello Mr. Parlogram, I am the owner of one of the CD SMH Japanese Super Deluxe Let It Be and my book serial number is the same as yours. After the UK stopped producing albums due to EU entry, the best version available for any Beatles album will be the Japanese editions.
Thanks for another insightful video, Andrew.: you covered everything very well. I bought the vinyl set, basically to have the Glyn John's version on quality vinyl. Could never stand Spector's bombastic overproduction, and the lp is probably my least fav Beatle LP, although I do like the Get Back album. Been collecting boots since 1970, so I've got everything pretty much. Thanks again, look forward to your next video.
Great video. I actually finally got the vinyl box and have been listening to it all day. I would have liked more but what people are forgetting is the superb Let It Be Naked that came out. If you add those tracks in with the Anthology 3 tracks you will be a better picture of the project. The EP in the set was partly intended to complement the Glyn Johns mix album with the 2 new stereo mixes on side 2 to go with the remix album. In my opinion the complete Roof top concert should have been included. But I have excellent sounding version on CD. The only thing I noticed that you brought up was the messing with the color saturation. On my original 1970 copy of the Glyn Johns mix album my front cover is sharp and crisp with the right color saturation and noticed on the new version the cover slightly blurry. My copy sounds just as good as the new version. So I wonder if I actually have a real copy as some were pressed in the UK in 1970 before being withdrawn.
We only had to wait over 50 years! For me the Get Back Glyn Johns mix album is what I am interested in. As for the rest....I have quite a number of Let It Be bootlegs. I will buy the Get Back vinyl if it becomes available.
I'm going to stick with the original vinyl copy of "Let it Be" As eccentric as is was with Spector's production it still has a charm to it even down to the strange apple press notes on the back cover..."this is a new phase Beatle album.." They couldn't bring themselves to say the Beatles were over.
The version of " Let It Be " on this album is far superior than the 45 version or the version on the Blue album, The first time I heard the album version in 1980, I was totally blown away by it !!!!
Let It Be is a great album. Rough and rocky and full of great songs. It’s now had three different remixes! The original, the Naked from 2003 and Giles Martin’s on the latest one. Which one is the best?
I have the 2009 CD and feel it is good enuf. A lot of Let It Be was recorded live, and there is just so much additional fidelity that can be rung out of the tracks. I also feel like it is not a strong enough Beatles record for me to get something that's slightly different. I am waiting for Revolver CD remix, which sounds like it could use a fresher mix. I have the White Album and Abbey Road in the new remixes, and while interesting, do not really move the needle like, say, the remix of All Things Must Pass (which I know many people hate).
I bought it, although I'm not a huge fan of the album. I like it, I don't love it. I bought the 2021 lp 1st and the lp box a week later. It's not bad, I'm happy to have it.
I wish the Let It Be album were left alone. The album didn’t need “freshening up.” In the future, it won’t need refreshing either. It’s historical work. Let it be…
After all these years, to see an official Apple Get Back LP on vinyl is remarkable.
Honestly a big reason why I made the purchase lol
You know that if its not released by Apple, the bootleggers will !
I completely agree. I'm not subscribing to a yearly service to watch one film. I was hoping to get to see it on the large screen in theatres. Disney exclusive is the reason I haven't seen it yet. Personally I would have rather had it been a two hour movie if it meant giving it a proper release.
@@benkleschinsky Just do the one month introductory deal and then cancel it.
you can just get it for a month for $10. that's 6hrs of Beatles. Pretty good value.
I may be in the minority, But I wanted to hear isolated Spector's orchestra as one of the tracks, like Something's strings on Abbey Road SDX. I Me Mine has great trumpets.
Me too! I wonder if something like that is available on UA-cam, I love instrumentals and isolations
Me too!
I'd love to hear let it be details
@@walterwhitejr.445 the “it’s not too bad” bootleg is goated
I've been digging a pygmy for almost 52 years. I just love the energy and spontaneity of the "Let It Be" album. I remember seeing a big stack of both the "Let It Be" and "Yellow Submarine" albums in the Woolworth's bargain basement in 1975. They were selling them for 99 cents. I bought 5 copies of each and handed them out to friends. I will get this. Anything related to the Liverpudlian moptops I want. I have all of their albums including the American ones like "Beatles '65" and "Something New."
My thoughts on the ''wrong Get Back mix'' being issued are these:
I've been a minor producer and a happy engineer for centuries (so it feels), and made my own checks track by track from the old underground boots (69 & 70) of Glyn Johns' mixes and, once re-sequenced and pitch-corrected, compared them to each of the 2021 offerings.
I have grown to love the other Giles mixes. I am excited to check this out.
This has material I'll want to go back to for years.
probably saving them up for a hypothetical release in the future.
@@gettinhungrig8806 did you watch the Get Back series? Billy Preston became a major part of the sessions and ignited a spark in the Beatles that hadn't caught before Billy Showed up. In fact Preston is the only artist who has shared the bill and listed on the lable of Beatles records.
i dont even like the beatles yet i can not stop watching this channel
I'm keen to hear the Glynn Johns demo. Worth the price of admission. I've been shocked to realize the number of projects he was involved with that I have always liked: Rolling Stones up to Black & Blue, Mad Dogs & Englishmen, Who's Next, Harvest, Rita Coolidge, Delayney & Bonnie on Tour with Clapton, Eric's Slow Hand, Backless & I Still Do, the early Eagles records, and more recent sessions with Linda Ronstadt to name a few.
Your videos never disappoint, Andrew! As incisive as ever! Thank you.
My pleasure, Nick!
Much appreciated, Jair.
I bought both the CD and LP boxed sets. And let me tell you, I am happy I have it all now being a collector and a huge fan. I even have the Rooftop Concerts bootleg on CD. Great video like always, so thank you!
While I didn’t want to buy this at first, I bought the Revolver super deluxe and was so pleased, then saw this on sale for $50 and couldn’t be happier
The Glyn Johns mix adds a lot of energy to the tunes, although some feel slightly sloppy.
Great review and looking forward to the next one. Not too many people talk about or even remember that album so this should be great.
Well done Andrew, another superb informative video. I think I may stick to the 2009 & Naked versions..👍
Love the new profile picture
it´s been a time saturation of info and opinions on this release but your analysis is superb as always. i´m really happy with the sound and the extras.
Very nice. I purchased the same two packages and can’t argue with any of your points, well done. Your production quality is improving as well; I enjoy the retro film look you are using (and thankfully not OVER using) on your graphics. I always look forward to your videos.
Thanks David. Much appreciated.
Hi, Andrew. There's a song called "Palace of The King of Birds" that
was recorded during the Let It Be sessions that would be worth
checking out on YT if you haven't heard it already; its a slow, dreamy
5 to 6 minute instrumental jam with a sort of early Pink Floyd
vibe to it; should have been included on the new box set but wasn't.
Andrew, once again, fantastic information. Thank you.
Thank you, Chris. Glad you enjoyed it.
I'm wainting for my box set, but i've already herad the sound files that came about and i think you're right. Great video. Thanks.
The Target edition looks great. Nothing like that here in Europe :(
@@Parlogram unfortunately not :(… weird cause the Beatles are from the Uk! Oh well…
Another great video Andrew.
Great video thanks. Loved the groovy outro music!
Glad you liked it!
Thank you for (continuing) posting HQ videos that strike a good balance between nitty gritty detail, and overviews that allow others to gather sufficient understanding to interpret the contents meaningfully. Plus they're engaging.
Thank you for watching. Glad you like them.
Thanks for taking the time and detailed effort to produce these videos. I like the design of the CD set and how it can be displayed to show either set of portraits. Apart from the audio, I buy these sets for the books, as they contain studio documentation and tape box notes that can't always be found elsewhere.
Thanks Andrew. I'm loving the vinyl box and the Get Back book!!
Based on your unboxing presentation last week I went with the vinyl. Like you mentioned, the Glyn John's LP was what put it over the edge for me. It's great to have it in hand over the boot version.
Agreed! Well worth the time and money spent! The books are fantastic as well and very informative.
I think this is rhe last time I can for quire a while
For Apple Corps, maintaining secrecy matters more than putting out a good product.
Good set but I still prefer the "naked" version
Great review. I picked up the 5lp set but have not listened to the whole thing yet. I really like what I have heard so far.
got this in the rock and roll hall of fame and I love it! I also got the dvd and I'd say it's amazing
It's the video content that really sets this package apart.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I have the super deluxe CD set , I agree that it could have been done on 3 discs. Over all I'm happy with it but I wish I bought the vinyl version.
Thanks for watching, James.
Great video, as always! 😀
Personally I'm sticking with my 2U/2U pressing but I really like how much content has been made available with this release.
Take care!
My pleasure, Bill!
Great video!! And I'll have something to say about next video ("...oldies...")... Greetings from Chile!
I have the CD box set and I’m more than happy. The Blu Ray hi res mixes are especially good.
Thing is for me, I just don’t have the budget. I have all the original mono/stereo in my collection, so no big deal :)
I agree John is checked out during the sessions, but I think he performs and sings the BEST of all the Beatles on the rooftop. He is really into it.
Yeah and that version sounds terrible.
You sure about that?
I stand by what I said last week - the Get Back album should get a seperate release, especially for those who don’t want to buy the box just for that.
Years ago I downloaded a complete discography (up to 2012) including band's studio albums and collections + solo albums and collections.
Thanks Matt!
A friend of mine just made me a copy of the bootleg of the rooftop in its entirety, so I'm good for a while. Doesn't sound bad, either.
Some of the Glyn John mixes, specially I Me Mine, are too muddy. I'm hoping to get my hands on a japanese box set to compare them and decide which are the best mixes.
enjoyed your review i decided on the 2 cd set myself like i did for the other reissues
Thank you, Edward!
Thank you, Craig. I hope you enjoy the vinyl.
Interesting!
What stopped me from getting the set are reports on the inner groove distortion on the LIB Giles remix. Were there any?
I didn't hear any inner-groove distortion on my discs. It might have just been an issue on the U.S./Canadian pressings.
@@Parlogram Thanks for the info!
Let it be…
