For those who do not understand the "Spanish" in flamenco-gypsy style of its music, "cante hondo" - done by the lead gypsy flamenco singer, is full of tirades, long notes, and scalar runs and trills. It roughly means "deep chant", or "deep singing", or "deep song." You hear the clapping - that is called "palmas" (lit., "palms"). You also hear a solo flamenco guitarist do a broken-note line that might remind you of Andreas Segovia - it is known as "falseta" or instrumental break, but the break is long, so I call it a "falseton." Then you hear the so called "escalera arabe" - Arabic scale - a Phrygian in D#, where the "secondo augmentado" (augmented second - which are the notes "E-Fx" (x - is double sharp, where you add two semitones to the original note - up) is apparent. And finally, there is a gypsy singing technique of eliminating the "d" in "-ado" or "-ada" terminations of Spanish verbs. For example, a cante hondo singer would say "enamorao" (in love) instead of the proper "enamorado", and treat the "ao" diphthong as a smooth, sliding elision - not separating with any breaks between the "a" and "o".
Bruh, nobody who is a spanish speaker is gonna have issues to understand these guys. im Colombian myself and I can understand everything. If somebody affirms that he/she can’t understand thats just bullshit.
This song really hit me. I can hear the pain, the sorrow, the hurt, in her voice. It sounds like a cry, a painful whaling, an expression of emotion from deep within her soul.
Yeah they are they said oh how I envy they way you treat your dog with kindness /care :( they sing why do you spit at my face ? Because I'm a dark skinned gitana /. Gitano or some call roma . Yes very hurtful and emotional indeed.
I love flamenco music...My parents let me go to Granada when I was 17 years old, as a graduation gift from high school. Met my first true girlfriend there, and drank some very good wine from a goat flask in a Gypsy cave, listening to flamenco music and entranced by the pretty dancers. I will never thank my parents enough for that experience so many years ago. Still listen to flamenco music 50 years later!
this is the last scene of 'Latcho Drom', a movie by Tony Gatlif : it is about the Romani people's journey from north-west India -staring the Kalbelia people- to Spain, a diaspora lived through music which originally starts in Egypt-with the Ghawazi people..... The film begins in the Thar Desert in Northern India and ends in Spain, passing through Egypt, Turkey, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, and France... the most enduring and passionate odyssey driven by the freedom of the gypsy soul....... the gitana" singer in this scene is 'La Caita' she sings mournfully of the centuries of persecution, repeatedly imploring "Why does your mouth spit on me?" as her query echoes out over the town.
Rosalia brought me here. Check her flamenco infused hit here. ROSALÍA - DE AQUÍ NO SALES - ua-cam.com/video/vy4lZs8fVRQ/v-deo.html . I wanted to hear real Flamenco singing and it sounds very similar to what she does, with a cool musical beat of course. Very visual as well. She said in an interview how hard it is to sing Flamenco so I had to hear someone else. Also, I was wondering what language it was. Sounded almost Arabic at times. Flamenco is a whole new world to me now.
My admiration for the Roma runs deep. This piece is from the film, Latcho Drom which I've watched perhaps 8 times!! It's available on UA-cam!! It traces the historic path of the Roma ( gypsies) with music and song. Highly recommend it. Best from snowy Montreal, Que. Canada

There's a lot of people commenting on how emotional flamenco music is. It's a lot like the Blues, you have to live it to put that emotion into it. I'm certain that if Gypsies listened to Etta James or Janis Joplin they would fully feel their music without understanding a single word.
As an Indian, it is really interesting and beautiful. Beautiful, because I feel the singer is trying to lay off some things frm her broken heart and the song just touches my heart, don't know why. Interesting, bcoz here in India too, we clap while singing or dancing, so as to keep the beat and also, the style is eerily similar.
What I understood, is that the Gypsies came from North-West India, for example Rajasthan. They picked up new instruments, words, and techniques along their travels. But you can hear many words, and techniques and styles from India. Add to this the often rich colors of clothes.
Yes, Flamenco style of singing by Romani people is a form of rajasthan folk singing. It just blows my mind to think of all the hardships they faced throughout history and still how they strived to preserve their way of living so well

💯💯Flamenco is one of those pure musical genres that is so raw and honest, that you can't help but fall completely powerless to its charm and submit on the spot without the slightest reservation. There's no sense resisting for you feel complete and total trust. Flamenco is one heck of a spiritual seductress.
Excellent song and storytelling. Some people think Flamenco is just about dancing and singing about long lost love but I love how this movie showed that Flamenco can also tell a story, an uncomfortable but true one. ;) Please give us more songs and don't forget the stories!
I dont understand the words , but her heart speaks to my spirit , and it moves me to tears every time .The real truth is pouring out of her heart and cannot be denied. It is the most beutiful expression from any human . Her passion is awesome .

I was in Spain a long time ago and was fortunate enough to see Flamenco up close and personal ... Also, there was a place in L.A. where one could go and see Flamenco music and dance, many moons ago. It has been way too long since I have seen, listened and enjoyed this wonderful art ... I so much love the music (and all arts) from cultures throughout the world. Beauty unites us.
I can't believe how many people say they hate gypsies. You cannot say you hate an entire ethnic group unless you know all of them. People, not only at this video but also many other flamenco songs/videos on UA-cam, say they hate gypsies or label them as thieves. I strongly recommend those people to read deeply about the history of the Gypsy people, who have been persecuted in Europe for centuries by the Europeans themselves and who have been forced to live in poverty. Again, hating an entire ethnic group because of what stereotypes they have is ridiculous, and the only people who should be hated are those who hate others for who they are born as and can't change.
Krijn Wilkens i think gypsis are very beatifull peapole i love there art and music and there clouthes and i do agree with you we should not put an entire groupe of peapole under the same stereotypes its wrong

@@sailazineb9192 you are aware that culture is not only their stupid art, music and unique cuisine. That's just superficial. Why don't we talk about their hierarchies? I love gypsy songs from India Afghanistan througout the Balkans and all the way to Spain and the Arab bedouin nomad world, there's raw and pure emotion in their music. Let's start their whole groupstructure is based on love, caring for one another and family.. now how can they be bad? and they have always been underdogs of society... I love gypsy people they are real people with a lot of heart and feelings so they won't bother you unless you bother them. Yes they do things to survive.

So sad this video was cut off in mid stride. I was really getting into it. I miss my years in Spain. I lived just a few hours North of Granada. There I found the Gypsy caves (mostly tourist traps) but always good and authentic flamenco, as well as the schools of flamenco and the student performances. The gypsies turned shouting into a haunting, never to be forgotten wail. And how they turned hand clapping into the sound of two hardwood blocks being struck together I'll never know. What a powerful musical language.
The cante jondo (deep song)was the original song form from where flamenco came from. It's a Gitano (gypsy) song. They later added guitar to it in the 1900s,which is where flamenco comes from. Rich aristocrats loved the sound, which is how it got so popular. Performers of flamenco agree that it was originally a Gitano art form. Also, there are more flamenco academies in Japan than anywhere else. It's like taiko (japanese drum), there's more taiko bands in LA, but it doesn't mean we made it.
Oh! You recognized that. The movie this song is from, called Latcho Drom(1993), actually depicts that and starts with Rajasthani folk songs. It's believed the Roma originated in India(Rajasthan), and as they were nomads they eventually migrated and settled in parts of Europe. Prominently, Romania, Portugal and the famous Andalucia(Spain), where Flamenco took its final form. That's why you see even the dance moves have similarities to Kalbeliya and Kathak. Also, the oscillations are called as Taan, which is like a passage. Phew!
Wow Alicante is nice, I'm an hour away I live in Torrevieja, I love Flamenco music 🎶 it's beautiful, spiritual and makes me feel emotional as well and happy

The pasodoble was invented for a movie. The Barefoot Contessa. Ava Gardner. Playing a gypsy.
Wow Alicante is nice, I'm an hour away I live in Torrevieja, I love Flamenco music 🎶 it's beautiful, spiritual and makes me feel emotional as well and happy
Beautiful music and culture love from Mesopotamia Iraq 🇮🇶 🇪🇸

Hay mucho arte y pasión en mi país, me emociona ver que gusta tanto en el extranjero. Gracias
Their singing style is very similar to the style of folk singers of Rajasthan (India)🇮🇳
They are Rajasthani, this is literally where they came from..
Here is the translation from the film subtitles. Thank you for sharing this. Very powerful. “You, you’re a stork
Who has landed on Earth.
Me, I’m a black bird who has taken flight.
Why does your wicked mouth spit on me?
What harm is it to you…
That my skin in dark and my hair gypsy black?
Why does your wicked mouth spit on me?
From Isabelle the Catholic…
From Hitler to Franco…
We have been the victims…
Of their wars.

I find myself envying…
The respect that you give to your dog.”
'a blackbird that fell to her' (earth) not taken flight.
Many thanks 🙏 for your translation!!!!
What film is this from???? Please tell us.

I find the women in this video to be incredibly beautiful. It's a peasant, earthy beauty, yet at the same time their stance is proud and regal.
this song is so touch! It got to my soul deeply, so deep like stars in the night
Gracias. Cuánta poesía, cuánta verdad. Saludos desde Uruguay.
these are my people, Gypsy as can be. she says at first, why do you spit on my face what fault have I? Because I am a dark skin gypsy woman?
Yea Thx
wow
beautiful!
you are adorable.
Gypsies in Spain may be perfectly fine people but here in Belgium they refuse to integrate and literally spit in your face if you denie giving them money (I've seen it happen not once but multiple times)
@@mickel1634 it is the version of the racists "they do not want to integrate" the whites does not accept the diference of others so the problem is not the integration but rather the rejection that makes the object some colors

Her skin looks better than most girls and women today, probably because is natural and does not rob toxic creams on her self.

Ay, tú eres una cigüeña

¿Por qué me escupes en la cara?
Qué más te podía hacer ser yo
que por ser morena y gitana?
Que más remedio compañera
