  • A before and after video of the Tappan Zee Hudson River Crossing in Tarrytown, NY. The earlier (top) video was filmed on May 7, 2013, and the recent (bottom) video on January 21, 2018. This video demonstrates the changes that have taken place to this area during this time period.
The Tappan Zee Bridge has been replaced by the new Gov. Mario M. Cuomo Bridge, opened to traffic on August 26, 2017. Two-way traffic currently crosses the new westbound span of the bridge, while work continues to complete the new eastbound span in 2018. The $3.9 billion contract was awarded in November 2012 and at the peak of activities, this was the single largest bridge project in North America.

At 3:35 look to the left of TZB roadway and see the house that contained the Barrier Moving Machine. For many years the bridge was 4 lanes inbound and 3 lanes outbound for the morning rush and the opposite in the evening. It is unbelievable that, looking at the video of the new bridge, you are seeing 8 lanes of traffic with the second parallel span yet to be completed. Once the second span opens they will run only 4 lanes on each span. The remainder of the space will be used for some sort of public transportation, pedestrian promenades, etc. If they ever need to expand to 14 traffic lanes the space will always be there for them.

The new one definitely looks much smoother to cross. The old one was very chewed up and rough for many years.

The name "Tappan Zee Bridge" is more popular & respectful to the Native Americans.
    I hate the new name!
