There are a lot of haters on UA-cam. Don’t listen to them. You obviously know what you’re doing. So keep up the great work. I happen to like the videos that would help me from day to day life. For instance, “where is the restroom?” Or something like, “where is a good place to eat?” General things like that. Thank you for taking the time and effort to make these videos to teach someone like me to speak a new language.

but it's true tho. i mean, you can totally say "you're welcome" and "how are you?", but those just sound weirdly formal sometimes. if you don't want to sound robotic, it is best to avoid those standard textbook phrases!

It's a long way from "these expressions are more formal than your textbook probably implies" to "don't say X". "You're welcome" in particular sounds perfectly natural to me. If I taught my students to say "ha ha don't be daft" (what I usually say in response to "thanks"), I would worry that natives from another country might not find this very elegant.
Thank you for your videos! Today is my 77th birthday, and about a week ago I decided to learn Mandarin. I am fortunate to have a Chinese friend who is very helpful, and it was he who referred me to your videos. This isn't a casual pursuit for me. My first goal is to pass the HSK 1 and 2 exams by the end of next year. I plan to work toward eventually passing the HSK6 exam - but have no idea how many years that might take. Being older actually presents an advantage in such a pursuit. Being retired, I can spent as many hours as I wish each day working toward my goals. Again, thank you very much for helping me get starting on this endeavor. Oh ... yes! I would like to see more videos that explore Mandarin as a reflection of the current culture.

When you're supposed to be learning Spanish for school yet come to class speaking Mandarin. 👁💧👄💧👁 Mandarin is supposed to be one of the hardest languages to learn, yet I find it so easy thanks to these videos! Honestly, it's less confusing than Spanish, which I'm supposed to be learning right now. I just wish I had people to be around that also speak Mandarin once I become fluent!
I am a native English speaker. While watching some English lessons (I was just curious so I clicked on the videos) I found that the teachers warned students not to say certain greetings. It was so strange since I use those greetings myself!

I've only found your videos the other day and I love them as you explain everything in a way that I can easily understand. My daughter has a native tutor and he always ask her, ni hao ma. Plus there are plenty of videos on here that are native Chinese speakers that teach you how to say how are you in Chinese. I've had people try to correct my English and tell me that I'm wrong but forget American English is different to British English, you get people that think they know it all but they don't. I'm very grateful for your videos and you're helping my 11year old with her mandarin as well 😁
If I wasn’t a native English speaker, I would want my teacher to teach me how to say: “Hello. Good morning. How are you?” than tell me that this way is “too formal” or “too traditional”, and to say, “Hey, what’s up?” instead. It’s a new (and disturbing) fad on UA-cam to promote street slang and go against proper diction and traditional greetings. But new learners to a language should always learn to speak properly and politely. (And you can NEVER be too polite!) Thank you teacher Yishuang for this video! I am getting help from Chinese friends here in Australia and they use the greeting ni hao ma. I find your videos are excellent and I have finally started to progress in learning Mandarin.
I often see videos on UA-cam telling English learners not to say things that I (another native speaker) definitely do sometimes say. It just seems to be a way content creators can get around the algorithm (and if they are sincere, I can't really blame them). I guess the same must go for videos teaching Chinese. Thank you for clearing this up for us. In case you ever read this, I spend much of my working life listening to Chinese students speak English and I'm in awe at your English grammar.

I have in the past heard “ni hao ma” is generally reserved for friends and loved ones as a greeting. However, as in your survey, Mandarin can evolve over time and usage rules vary by speaker and region. I think you did a great job explaining why it's ok to say Ni Hao Ma. I now understand why I may hear one Chinese say to another Chinese "Ni chi le ma? and why I should not say it to strangers. Before, when I said it, the Chinese I addressed would assume that as a foreigner I wanted to know if they had eaten and not how s/he was doing. This then gave me a chance to ask in Chinese, "Ni chi le ma gen ni hao yi yang ma? While learning Chinese in China I hated being taught something but then later finding out that what I had learned was a dumb-down version of what Chinese people actually say to one another. For example, "Ni hao" is how a Chinese get someone's attention and not "dui bu qi". When I asked my teacher(s) about this (and other dumb-downed words/phrases), the reply would be...Chinese is so hard or I didn't think you could understand. For this reason, I now do self-studies.

Ive seen so many videos show up with a title/thumbnail that says you shouldnt say these phrases, but I never watch them, I would rather hear it from an actual teacher that I trust (like you) or ask a few chinese friends what they think. Your video has been very helpful because I noticed those videos saying “ don’t use ni hao ma “ . I got confused. But now I know when to use it or not use it. And you can do both grammar and culture ( but mostly grammar though ). Thank you.
It is good to have as main stream grammar and vocabulary however sessions like this one are also very useful, insighful and informative. They give additional contexto and will prevent people from making basic mistakes. For me personally it was very interesting that you have such a wide range of greetings starting from very casual ones. I feel I understand the casuality logic behind. Thank you again!

Your video has been very helpful because I noticed those videos saying “ don’t use ni hao ma “ . I got confused. But now I know when to use it or not use it. And you can do both grammar and culture ( but mostly grammar though ). Thank you.

It is good to have as main stream grammar and vocabulary however sessions like this one are also very useful, insighful and informative. They give additional contexto and will prevent people from making basic mistakes. For me personally it was very interesting that you have such a wide range of greetings starting from very casual ones. I feel I understand the casuality logic behind. Thank you again!
