The footwork is amazing and from an era where gather steps weren’t really a thing, so your steps had to be right. Kobe is the other clear guy that shines a lot with his footwork too.

But he's clearly travelling (like most players have been doing all this time) because when he establishes his pivot foot and immediately after making the spin, he moves it (pivot foot) with the ball still in his hands. This is why is extremely difficult for any defender guard these moves.

That pivot foot that he spins off is not a gather step though, it’s just the foot he was one once he picked up the ball. Once he lands with the 2 feet that’s his gather.
@@Spider-Complexion at 1:27 he doesn't pivot with that foot if you look closely he's got both feet in the air while doing a 270
