Turned out great! I am a big fan of plastic-handled tools and plastic hammers. No matter how bad they are they always turn out good. The rust in the handles is always a problem. You did good you got a lot of the rust out.
Handle really came back to life........I think additional soaking in Evapo-Rust will definitely help but don't expect perfection but if you do manage to get it perfect I want to know the exact procedure so I can do it too.
Great job on that! I think if you can submerge the handle in a narrow jar of Evaporust, then figure out how to create a seal good enough to let you pull a slight vacuum, the air would come out of the inside of the handle and let the Evaporust get in there. Not a laboratory quality vacuum. Just a hand pump of some sort would do it. Just spit ballin'.
Beautiful work Tom. I was waiting for the soak in Evaporust! If you're lookin for ideas I'd get a small length of pvc(1 1/2") and a cap and make a little vertical soak tank . I bet if you wrap the blade in painters tape it would protect it from damage. let it soak for a few days and hit it with compressed air.
Your best bet is to just pull the handle off, clean the steel, then put the handle back on. The old PROTO yellow handles are a much better formula than the old Craftsman and similar drivers. When an acetate handle starts to go it'll have a horrible puke smell that hits you from across the room.
0000 steel wool + Flitz + PlastX is my go-to treatment for plastic handles!
Fantastic job Tom! 😃👍
Thanks John!

Great suggestion. Thanks!
Great job Tom. I'm happy you saved the handle. It's one of my favorite things to do, cleaning acetate handles. Very satisfying.
It is satisfying for sure. Thanks Alex
Handle came out nice. These older handles can get moldy with age.
Thanks Mike!
Real nice job that screw driver. Is there a way of removing the handle to thouroly clean the metal and then reinsert it?
I could remove it by heating it up and pulling it out. Putting it back is my concern. Would have to epoxy it.
@@TomGunnTools Aha, I get it. So better off leaving well enough alone. Thanks.
You can try electrolysis to extract the rust inside of the handle.
That would probably work! Thanks for the idea Paul. I need to get that set up one day!
From crap to ice cream. Nice job. Great addition to any tool box.
Hahaha, thanks.
Were those fiber or buffing wheels on the grinder?

I was thinking that! Maybe next time.
That turned out nice !!!!! I cleanup tools , but I'm not at your or Magdads level ,
Beautiful work Tom amazing!! And impressive I can't believe you saved it!!
Thanks Chad!
