- Secret Service in Darkest Africa (aka Manhunt in the African Jungles) In this Republic Serial an attempt to control the entire Middle East and defeat the Allies, Nazi agent Baron von Rommler captures and impersonates Sultan Abou Ben Ali , leader of all the Arabs. Opposed to him is Secret Service Agent Rex Bennett , along with British reporter Janet Blake and Chief of Police Captain Pierre LaSalle.

All these fight scenes were exhausting for the actors and stunt men....they deserve a lot of credit.
I love these serials that Republic made, thanks for putting these on.
One thing about all these old serials...very entertaining...land hats never come off during all the fighting action.
The lovely looking heroine is Joan Marsh, born in 1914, she was a child actor in silent movies from 1915. She blonded herself up in the Jean Harlow fashion, and went on to play brazen blondes. Possibly the only movie that she appeared in that anyone today would recall was with Bing Crosby, Bob Hope's "Road To Zanzibar" 1941. She made this serial in 1943 & retired in 1944.

What was even more amazing to me was that he was dry and his clothes pressed when he was in the engine room. How did he manage this just entering the door and going through?

The hats seem to be glued to the heads during the fightings .They never drop them
That serves two purposes, one it help disguise the stuntman from the actual actor, and they didn't have to worry about continuity in editing whether or not the Hat was on or off if it just stayed on through the action scenes.
You're right. To be exact, the stuntmen's hats had lanyards that were barely visible on camera. Many Saturday Matinee kids back then- including my dad- would notice the hats staying on the heads.
And at least 30 fights and not a single black eye either.
It must hide that either the actor or the stunt man was bald perhaps?

LOL no one notices that the Sultan isn't the same guy or that he has a German accent. And of course like all of these series even though you have a gun in your hand or holster why not fist fight instead? But then again when they do shoot they couldn't hit an Elephant from 6 feet away. Our hero also needs to use the same glue that keeps his hat on to keep a gun in his hand.He can't manage to keep it in his hand for more than a few seconds before someone knocks it out.

Like the story, does it seem strange that in the first two chapters the only side racking up any deaths, were made by the nazi , killing their own guys.

How many bullets did Janet have in the gun she was using, which was Pierre's episode 1? I wish that the date these were first shown would be on these serials. It would be great to know. I have an idea these are from during WWII, but when? How many fight scenes were in this serial? It would be fun to know.

What African jungles? The whole story takes place in Casablanca, Morocco. There's not a jungle for hundreds of miles.
This serial was originally titled the Secret Service in darkest Africa. It was retitled Manhunt in the African jungles for the re-release. Apparently whoever decided to re-title it didn't actually watch the serial.

Well I don't know that one time all of Africa was known as The Dark Continent.

United Nations was officially formed on June 26th 1945. However all during the war the Allies were often unofficially referred to as the United Nations.
