- Trevor Sinclair gives us the low down on how sophisticated and great 2SM is (once was) and talks us through the various radio departments and in descriptive terms about the 'jocks'
Those jocks are flat chat keepin the airwaves alive with tonnes of radio ga ga, along with that spontaneous easy going sound you hear, every time you turn your radio on - or used to.
Then there's some ad about the Robinsons Lemon Barley Super Bus, excited ? sounds like Frank Fursey but not sure.
Then a few 2SM jingles to hum to.
This lot was dubbed off cassette and while the audio resolution is not as good as 1/4 inch reel, with a bit of audio processing it turns out ok.

The station of my youth, a time when 2SM commanded a weekly cumulative of 1,000,000 listeners a week (according to the first 2 surveys of 1978, pre 2WS) and audience shares in the 20's, 30's in some shifts. We will never see it's like again.
This is back when Top 40 radio could also have a quality news service. This is back when radio had jingles that gave the station a real energy. This is back when breakfast shows were not about a stunt a second but genuinely funny announcers. This is back when every shift at the station was hosted by a DJ in that city. This is how I want my radio station to sound today.
2SM was the giant of Sydney radio stations.How I wish I had a time machine!
2SM, Chocolate Moove and Hot Chips from the Pavilion at Bondi Beach - that was a summer for me :)

Hi Trevor :) a colleague at 2SER FM in early 1982 dubbed this to cassette while occupying an off air studio at 2SM.
They gave it to me from their personal archive from cassettes they wanted transferred in 2012.
So by chance & circumstance, here it is.
2SM gave the World Rocktober and some groundbreaking promotions, buggered things up by broadcasting surreptitiously on the FM band before getting 'the' licence.
2sm was a powerhouse of Sydney radio. That format change to "light n easy" in 1988 was a disaster.
For interest (as some people like to know!), the background track used from 00:25 thru to 03:20 is from the soundtrack of the film 'Bilitis', a track called 'I Need A Man', music by Francis Lai - (released in Oz on 'M7' records, later to become '7 Records'...

Commercial FM in 1980 killed SM.
