  • As part of our Debating Europe series, diplomat Kim Darroch, historian Marlène Laruelle, policy consultant Mark Medish and diplomat Eva Nowotny discussed the US elections and their implications for Europe. Misha Glenny, IWM Rector, moderated the debate.
Americans go to the polls in November to elect a new president. Or rather an old president for the second time. Incumbent Joe Biden boasts an impressive economic record but has been less assured handling the dramatic and violent events overseas, notably the Russo-Ukrainian war and the conflict between Israel and Hamas. Former president, Donald Trump, dominates the Republican Party in Congress but is battling several civil and criminal court cases. Europe looks on nervously at this battle of the gerontocrats. The result in America will massively impact European debates on future defense, trade, and climate policies.
April’s Debating Europe event at the Burgtheater brought together leading policy makers and scholars from America and Europe to assess the prospects for the election, and the impact of its possible outcomes on Europe, Ukraine and the Middle East.
A collaboration between the Burgtheater, ERSTE Foundation, the Institute for Human Sciences (IWM Vienna), and DER STANDARD.
