    I’ve wanted one of these for a very long time. No problematic air suspension on US market cars, awesome power, minimal emissions devices to fail, the smoothness of an I6, and bulletproof 5 speed automatic. These things go for hundreds of thousands of miles with minimal work done to them.

    Been driving European diesels daily since 2004 myself. I grew up around them. My dad had a 1980s Ford Tempo diesel, replaced that with a 1991 Jetta diesel, then a 1998 Jetta TDI which I eventually bought off him in 2004.
    Yeah, those older ones in particular are a bit noisy and smoky/smelly, but as you get into the 2000s with higher injection pressures, they get better and better. And the mid 2000s seems to be a bit of a sweet spot where the injection technology was becoming fully modern, but we didn't have the crazy complicated emissions components yet.
    Great mileage. Great torque exactly where you use the engine in every day operation, so they sort of feel 'effortless' when you're not really trying to go fast. Yes, they're still a bit clattery, but are far and away better performing, smelling and substantially quieter than what diesels used to be.
    They are the best vehicle for long distance highway trips for both the mileage as well as cabin noise being relatively muted as most of them are geared very tall since the engines don't rev very high in the first place, not to mention enough torque to be able to go up pretty decent grades at highway speeds without having to go down a gear or two as well as accelerate to overtake cars without needing to drop down a gear. They really are phenomenal long distance highway machines.
    I've wanted an E320 CDI for a long time. My current boss, also a diesel head, has one. Great driving car, super comfortable, fits my oddly long torso nicely.
    Getting mid to high 30s MPG average with 369 ft-lbs on tap near 2000 RPM is actually quite nice.

    I owned two diesel Mercedes cars and can tell you why I now drive a gas car.
    1. The fuel. Unlike gasoline, Dissel does not evaporate and is greasy, it stains your clothes, and I always have to carry surgical gloves to fuel. Also, not all gas stations offer diesel, and many times had to refuel at truck stops which are dirty and smelly.
    2. The noise. The diesel engines are a lot noisier than gas engines and it gets on my nerves, especially on long highway drives. Maybe the newer ones are quieter, but the two I owned made a lot of noise.
    3. Pollution. They put out a cloud of smoke that cannot be good for anyone or anything.
    4. Diesel price. Although you get better mileage on diesel fuel, the price is on average more than $1 per gallon - thus the savings are not as great as one might think.
    5. Higher cost of repairs. Many places do not service diesel engines and the ones who do, charge more because they can.

    I drive a 2.0 tdi and haven’t regretted it one bit ❤️😊 Diesel is much cheaper in Germany so it’s a logical thing to do plus all taxis drive with diesels too and e classes like this are „the“ taxi so you can’t actually screw up buying one of them in addition to the better fuel consumption diesels are often quieter on country roads or on the autobahn because they are often more damped due to the rougher running characteristics and they just spin slower than gas engines if you go 200kmh on the autobahn the diesel will be much quieter running at roughly 3k rpm whilst the gas engine screams at 4k or higher 😊

These are great cars and I'm close to buying an e280cdi here in the UK (annual tax is cheaper than the 320) same engine but detuned of course. With maintenance they last forever, I have had 2 w210 e classes, 1 petrol 2.6 and one 3.0td, wonderful cars to drive, better than E39 5 series in my opinion but corrosion on our salty roads ultimately claimed them. We also have the issue that older used cars are considerably less valuable here than in the US so nobody pays for maintenance unless they are the first or maybe second owner so the knock on effect is that they are no longer reliable! Very nice video.

The E320 and even the E350 of the W211 generation can go on forever. If there’s any minor foibles it can be the electronics, but they shouldn’t be that hard to source. @Rahul Mandala With proper maintenance, and changing faulty parts, sure, even the newer models last a long time.
      But my point is that all mercedes models after, say 2000, all of them have a couple of "known issues" or weak points, that should be periodically checked and replaced in order to have a nice running car.
      We all know about the brake system problems of the w211, the infamous balancing shaft of the m112 and so on.
      That was not the case with older models, where you just have to change the consumables and drive on and all the problems were caused by improper maintenance or age.

    • @rahulmandala4930
      @rahulmandala4930 Рік тому

      @@svetko05 Yeah, I don't deny the M112 had the undeniably infamous balance shaft, but that gen of V6s was icky. The OM648 I6, on the other hand (as featured in the E320 CDI), is a solid-quality Inline six-cylinder engine, though it may not be a V engine. However, for the V6s, the M276 3.5L V6, in both NA and Turbo configurations, is an incredible engine with very few failure points (None that I knew of, at least). The SBC does make for a scary failure point, with few just failing and most others saying it's from wear/end of usable life. Otherwise, it just comes down to the frequency/usage of the brakes. Warranties can take care of these things. Otherwise, W211s are still pretty sweet cars as is.

The 2.5 V6 TDI, 2.0 TDI prior to 2010, and the 5.0 V10 TDI are a few examples of unreliable TDI engines. The Subaru Boxer Diesel is another engine that is junk and I’m glad that they didn’t make it to the USA. The only reason why Subaru did it is because they wanted to increase sales in Europe.

    Was looking into buying one of these in Wagon after being bored of constant repairs of my 2008 A6 Allroad - my mom has an A-Class and brother has two mercs, neither of any of them seem to be breaking as much as my audi - that said, with the audi breaking a bit less in the recent time, the need for basically same type of second car has been postponed. Anyway, while researching these a while ago found out that from 2007 model year (sometimes 2006 reg. year) they come with a new V6 engine with 550 Nm (my audi has 450 and that already seems a lot), Mercs with larger diesel engines (except for 220) will come automatic only (not so with audis and BMWs), and a large majority of these mercs with air suspension come with problems associated with that - sagging back or entire car. Also interestingly - the 4matic versions of these are manufactured in Austria only by Magna Steyr, the same guys doing the G-class and I believe the new Supra? Also - altghough prices vary a lot, even the cheapest cars with 600 000 km (tons of cars with 300 000 and 400 000 km on sale in Germany) have pretty good looking interiors, some still look decently fresh even after such long operation. That’s great. Is that the in-line 5 cylinder? I wish they sold the w211 in the United States with manual transmission. No such luck though.

      @@b33gft67 yes indeed. Inline 5, has nearly 300,000 kms and keeps on keeping on. I drive Portugal > Spain on the regular and it is a perfect motorway car. But I have the 203 wagon (C Class), not the w211. I had the w210 wagon with the 250TD engine before this one, also an inline 5 (OM605). Sold it with 470,000 kms an
      d it never skipped a beat. Was like brand new, interiors and all. I kind of hope I had kept both now.

    Just as a comparison for gas prices in the US compared to petrol (gas) prices in the UK, we currently have a price on average of £6.90 per gallon which equates to just over 9dollars a gallon.
    Keep up the good work.

    Today's gas prices in northern germany:
    E5 (Super): 1,749€/ l --> 7.581$/ gallon
    Diesel: 1,539€/l --> 6.671$/ gallon
    Within the last 3 months, prices skyrocketed from 1,29€ to 1,74€ for no reason.

    my aunt had one of these in the late 2000’s. i always thought this was the coolest car ever because this car was one of the first i’ve seen (as a kid) with the centre display, sat nav, radio. it broke down a LOT, but it was pretty fuel efficient and had a nice exhaust note 😸

    Wonderful car, i own a W211 2009 e550. i never have issues. I do maintain it though. It cruises along nicely, but then a pedal press towards floor and it's off to the races. Well kinda LoL but i didn't get it for speed. Just a great, comfortable daily driver. I also own the w210 2002 e430. Both cars run and drive so well.

      @@rafael123loek it sure is. Plus the w210 just smells like leather. Both are comfortable but the 210 wins that also.

    I have had 2 of these cars with over 130k miles on each from new with virtually no trouble. In contrast the new V6 E Class CDI Diesel I had subsequently gave endless trouble including the turbo going on fire!!! Now driving a E300 Hybrid. Great mileage, excellent performance but not allowed to use it for towing which is a huge drawback for me as well as huge service costs if the Hybrid system gives trouble.

    I really loved those W211 with CDI engines. Had a lot of them as taxi cabs here and some did well over 500 000 km without serious problems. W212 was maybe the last good E-class (because it had CDI engines as well) but I have always been more emotionally attached to W211. This video was a great nostalgic trip for me.

    Mr. Wizard I can answer the public distain for diesels!! We still remember the early 80's GM diesels, who could forget the Oldsmobile or Chevy pickup diesel debacle. The newer oversized and overweight pickups do work well with diesel for those that actually need that much capability. For us gasoline guys, hard to beat a 40 MPG modern Camry!!

  • @pope406

    Diesel engines are great if you drive longer distances. If you drive short distance where the engine does not really get up to temperature then a petrol engine is the choice. I drive my diesel long distance and it´s 1,25 gallons (4,7 Liters) per 100km (62 miles). So it´s about 50 miles per gallon. I don´t need a 400hp+ V8 to drive from A to B when the maximum allowed speed is 75 miles/h. As european it´s not really about the price of diesel vs petrol, it´s more about fuel economy. The price is not so much different when you consider that fuel consumption of american cars with alot of HPs are much much higher.
