aha!, so someone else knows that version! these where the first, english lyrics i learned to the song, but i,m not sure if they, or the more famous ones most people sing,are the original, english translation. so will the real gloomy sunday, please stand up !
Its diamanda galas' version
It's the most literally accurate translation of the Jávor lyrics that still maintains the original scansion and rhyme scheme. Not quite as evocative as the Holliday version which adds the juxtaposition of the wedding with the funeral, but closer to the more bittersweet time Jávor wanted to give what was originally an incredibly bleak protest ballad.
Bestest version of this song! Sarah McLachlan is an angel on earth with that voice, leaves me breathless every time.
I gotta admit, i used to find this creepy back then when i first heard this song(because of those articles that suggested its casual relations with people who committed suicide). Being the non-skeptic that i was back then, this song scared the crap out of me. But now~ boy i find this incredibly relaxing, especially the guitar part at the beginning of the song, and the lovely voice of Sarah mcLachlan. I love this version of the song, it flows smoothly with a silk-like texture. it's simply beautiful~

I can definitely see people killing themselves to this song, especially the first 2 verses.
I too find it beautiful and haunting, but my reasoning is because the person singing it is so lost and so distraught over loosing a loved one that the only way out they can see is death. I think it's totally plausible for someone who's in a really dark place to hear this song, become inspired ( or even more depressed then ever) and then doing it. The singer is completely resolute, and until they ruined it with that final verse, the ending is chilling to the bone, but also strangely comforting, and I can totally see people hearing and feeling that and then just... Killing themselves. Because this song makes it seem comforting.

Yeah - can't help feeling that "It was all just a dream!" ending is such a cop-out . . . This is supposed to be a tragedy, not a Disney movie.
@@dollcefina I thought so at first, but if you listen to it closely It seems to start out implying that it was all a dream with some uplifting cords, then it goes "find you asleep ... in my heart" then the music falters and goes melancholy again. What I take from that is eaither the person is still dead or (based on the next few lines) never loved them back in the first place. So they wake from this profound dream of loved lost to discover it was never real. That is a whole other kind of sad emptiness.
Still, that being said, I have heard versions that leave that part out and I like them better. The song is tighter with a stronger punch if it sticks with the single theme.

Youre such a idiot...even with help you cant want to keep alive. Depression is just pure realism, and people who tried to commit suicide about that knows it. Im almost 14 years old, and started to have depression at 7. I tried it almost 5 times, but i was very weak. Now the only motive for me to live is justice and death, no more.

If you didnt already know, the song was composed in 1933.. Its obviously a very emotionally sad song,but it was dubbed over by billie holiday and was banned from many countries during the time of WW2.. There was alot of suffering and heart ache during that time, so, many people committing suicide after 'listening to the song' would have had many other emotional issues due to that devestating time.
I'm not a big fan of McLachlan, but wow, she did an awesome job with this song. Billie Holiday will always be the ultimate when it comes to this but I am very impressed with the quality and sensitivity of this version.
So far this version has only killed 86. Not too shabby.

My sister and I were kidnapped from our mother by a madman at gunpoint and taken across state lines when I was 18 months old ( she was 7 months). I didn't see my mother again until I was 9 yrs old as she found us through school records in NY 1984. It has been a fucking unbelievable hard road to walk and I will undoubtedly never recover fully from the horrors I endured but it does get easier and the truth always seeks itself. Have faith & believe that you will be reunited with them someday & my prayers are with you all.
There is someone that loves you even though maybe you will get mad with me or you will think is what everyone says,'' just religion'' but actually Jesus loves you just give him the opportunity to treat you, to talk to you. I promise that you wont feel lonely, and yes you will have problems just like everyone else but you will be in his hands, he will guide you out of it. hope you got my message, I did it with my best intention.

Wow, there is an otherworldly sadness to this track. You can sense that the composer wrote it the depths of despair. It kind of sounds like Led Zeppelin copied this a little for Ramble On.

I hate to bitch but I don't like this version. It goes from barely audible to notes 2 octaves above the original version. Being able to sing high is an accomplishment, but doesn't always make a song better.

The original is by Rezso Seress in 1931 it is very Erie but I like it and this one is nice too.

that last verse was added much later ,to make the song less depressing by giving it a happy ending, but i think it trivialises the rest of the song. also, it is too idealistic. in real life, there are no happy endings to tragidies. how nice it would be, if i could wake up one morning & find that the deaths of my pairents, & the last 4 years, when my life has become little more than a despirate struggle for survival, had all been nothing but a horrible nightmare, & that it was a lovely ,sunny morning, in may, 2013, with my dad, sitting in the kitchen with a cup of tea, & my mam sitting on the bench, out in the garden, reading a book. but, in the real world, wer'e just not that lucky !

Wonderful - as only Sarah can do - ❤️❤️❤️. It must be said that the last verse is NOT part of the original translation of the Hungarian lyrics. It was added because the American music media of the time considered it to be too morose as Seress had written it. So, they decided to add the “it was all a dream” part to take away the supposed “sting” of the original song. You can hear, in this version by Sarah, that even the modality of the song is noticeably different (as it was not written by the original composer) and I feel it actually detracts from the song. Too bad the English version is so poorly altered and thus it is but a pale reflection of the original. 😢
