- Eolis, the city of the elves, once breathed peace and prosperity. But today, it is in great danger of being destroyed. It's raining meteorites on the World Tree and mad monsters have taken the opportunity to unleash themselves. The wells are drying up and people are afraid. For peace to be reborn, someone must enter the World Tree and eliminate the evil that lives in the Evil fortress ...
From the World Tree to the Evil Place, passing through the mist and the branches, it is the story of an expedition filled with adventure and mysteries.
Music from the game Faxanadu, developed by Hudson Soft and published by Hudson Soft in Japan and Nintendo in the West, released on Famicom in 1987 and on NES in 1989.
Composer: Jun CHIKUMA

Only those who played this game in the early 90s (like me) can understand how MAGICAL the atmosphere of the game was! Thank you for your wonderful performance!
I am one of them. 😉 Thank you for this precious listening.
This made me think of modern video game players that don't get memorable chip tunes, mostly orchestral ambiance, or music that is already too elaborate to have that earworm power.
I'm also one of them! This was a favorite of mine growing up. The music and the world in the tree always enchanted me. Vastly underrated game
I was there too, traveling up the branches of the world tree, despairing through the land of mist, emerging once again at Daybreak, claiming the fabled Dragonslayer, conquering the mutated darkness. My favorite game of all time. It has not been surpassed in all these years, and likely never will.
I was with it in the 80s
A faithful and respectful arrangement! Faxanadu's soundtrack is nothing short of genius and I'm sure that anyone who took the time to understand both the game and the music on this level needn't be reminded. I'm just thankful there are others
Faxanadu holds a special place in my heart. To have stumbled upon this treasure is absolutely magical! Thanks for performing this, Gabb, and for providing sheet music ❤️
So.. you tripped and fell on a copy of Faxanadu and the cartridge got lodged in your heart? You probably should have gone to the hospital before posting your mishap on social media. 😧
What?!?!? You actually did Faxanadu!!! YES!!! This game was my first OG rpg grind! Because if you're not racking up 20k gold at the beginning to buy The Magic Shield and Death magic, what are you even doing? Amazingly played, sir! Faxanadu has the best music! One of my favorite games of all time. Thanks for including the sheet music, and thanks for taking me way back to when I was playing this as a little kid with my cousins, brothers, and aunt!
Aww, thank you very much for this nice comment and for attesting to the quality of this amazing game. It's true that the acquisition of the Magic Shield and the Death spell at the beginning of the game is quite tempting to bother to save the necessary money. (In reality only the Magic Shield is really useful).
Enter screen, kill 2 spikey slugs and a jumping eye, exit screen. Next, re-enter screen, kill two spikey slugs and a jumping eye, exit screen. Three irl hours later, you have a lost a portion of your irl sanity, but you have the magic shield, Death magic, the J-key and a real chance you won't be slaughtered in the next fifteen minutes!
@@littleitaly83 Sad thing is: The spikey slug give only bread...no coins
This is my first RPG grind too. I loved this game. Amazing music
One of my favorite NES games. Great work!
Mr. Riggs! Love your channel! Also, love Faxanadu!
I knew Riggs would like this. My comment is only 2 years late.
Amazing achievement to honor this very distinct soundtrack by recording every piece! There is nothing quite like it as far as NES music is concerned.
This is honestly one of the best soundtracks in all of gaming. Thank you for doing it justice.
really feels like the original OST was composed on piano how this sounds. mist came out amazing on piano.
from Japan. Thank you very much for your wonderful performance. It made me feel nostalgic as I remembered my childhood.
Melting ,... I played it in 89?? , still almost everyday think of that game
You sir, are extremely talented and your arrangement/interpretation is nothing less than genius.
That's so kind of you, thank you !!
Mist was one of my favorites in the game and you made it sound amazing. Thank you
Seriously, one of my favorite songs ever. Glad to see it covered!
Mantra is my favorite song.
This is incredible. Thanks for reinterpreting a crucial part of my childhood.
Oh man, you smashed it!!!! Perfect!!!! The best Fax piano version ever!!!! Congrats!
Daggers and wingboots, mantras and monsters await you. What a marvelous journey!
Seriously got goosebumps listening to this! One of my favorite games and game soundtracks of all time, so beautifully expressed ❤️
Thank you very much, Grace!
Can't express enough how happy I am with this, thank you so much. This was a favorite game of mine growing up and the music was one of the earliest in my life that had the power to send chills down my spine and enchant me. Just beautiful work, thanks for doing it so much respect!
I'm so glad you like this rendition, that comes from my young gamer heart. Thanks a lot!
I didn't realize how beautiful the music of this game really is.
A wonderful arrangement. Merci beaucoup pour votre efforts. ^^
15:26 Just now noticed this genius transition you did to introduce the next song.
These are very different songs, I added this transition so that the contrast wouldn't unsettle the listener too much. I'm glad you like it. :)
Gen Z: Korean pop music
Gen X: Japanese composers - whether you knew it or not
Bro that was brilliant. Beautiful playing. I think this is the best soundtrack on the NES. I loved and still love this game and the music was one of the biggest reasons why. Those old NES composers knew what they were doing.
Yes! Jun Chikuma has created with this OST a very beautiful musical work.
Amazing. I was given Faxanadu as a birthday gift when I was 8 or 9 years old
Great performance!
Very unique music in this game. I always thought the mist level's music was so haunting and isolating.
True! Jun Chikuma knew how to create quite an atmosphere.
Nous avons maintenant l'opus complet. Un travail très impressionnant! Félicitations, Maestro!!!
Un grand merci, Song Writer !
This game was my safe place when I was a kid.
Great arrangements and execution! If there’s one NES game that deserves a modern remake with even more world building and action, it’s Faxanadu.
I so agree!
holy cow, and im 8yo again! haha Well done!
This game had an incredible soundtrack! Incredible piano playing! So fast and precise! Beautiful 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Merci beaucoup!
Merci Christian !
Underrated game, underrated music and underrated piano player
I felt like journeying to the Faxanadu dimension, and so the wormhole appears.. by the deft hands of Gabb.
🤟 🎹 🎶 👏 again..Bravo
What a nice comparison! Thanks!
Wow! So very glad I got directed to this masterpiece! I watched from start to finish right away for the first of what I am sure will be many many many many times over! Thank you so much! Thank you!
Oh thank you very much for this intense listening.
@@GabbPiano It's cool to listen to ALL the tunes but of course I keep getting lured back to Mantra. There is some magic in that song and you execute it brilliantly!
@@GabbPiano Do you take requests? I used to leave this game on pause just to listen to this jam: ua-cam.com/video/I6mftPOyQX0/v-deo.html
@@girderzombie I admit that Mantra also has a significant place in my heart.
Yes, all Castlevanias seduce me with their musical atmosphere and I would like to adapt them to the piano. The Game Boy versions, which I really like, are part of this, even if it will be in a later phase.
Incredible. You brought tears to my eyes with this. Thank you.
I just want to say that I appreciate how you brought an immense sense of appreciation for this music without adding more notes, but by using the piano pedals to bring a more organic/breathing feeling to this otherwise mechanical music. An 'analog midi' mastery is here at work that transcends the digital realm. It brings incomprehensible joy to my mind.
I am man enough to admit I am quite jealous of your Lucious locks. Enjoy your flowing curls Mr. Tesla(Gabb).
Wonderfully played! Thank you!
Edit: You're the best piano player on youtube imho. You are truly living each track, so much emotion in the presses and facial expression... and it reflects on each and every track.
That’s so nice of you, thank you!
Absolument génial. Bravo.
This is so under appreciated. Great work and please please continue your work. Having the sheet music along with this is like icing on the cake.
Thank you for this kind encouragement!
Ah yes, the mantra, the bitter sweet lullaby that it was bed time, and you’d best write down your password with all lowercase and uppercase correctly or all that work was for not.. 🎉 cheers mate, and bravo. 👏🏻 thank you for relighting an old adventure never forgotten, but less known and travelled by the simple. 😈
Thank you Valor56. A great adventure indeed, in which I enjoy diving back into regularly.
I remember playing this with my late father. Listening to you play brought be back to those days. I thank you sir and your playing was spot on and a pleasure to enjoy.
Thanks a lot! I'm happy to have awakened in you these precious memories.
Beautiful interpretation of the spundtrack! It's rare to find a classic game that sounds just as good on solo piano! I think you really captured the grandness that the OST was angling for
Very good performance.
Even today, I tend to play Faxanadu every now and then. Too bad the game never got an official sequel.
Thank you, Oriru. I also often replay Faxanadu and its magic still works on me.
Serious Steve Vai energy going on at those keys.
I remember playing this with my best friend at the time. We weren't zelda fans though we had the game. Same with Dragon Quest. We were just uninterested in these RPG type games. Then we popped this sucker in. What intrigued me? The story made me feel sorry for the people and the main character. That and we didn't know how to get into the first door- in fact we didn't even recognize that there was a door! Hahahah. But as we figured that out and we proceeded..it was just so epic, foreboding and we were just committed to helping this poor man save this thirsty, struggling village! The churches were such a sanctuary too. Those continue codes were a pain but we painstakingly noted and entered it!! Fearful that we messed up! I remember how hard we worked to get/afford winged boots! I guess I can say that it was this game that made be fall in love with RPGs and action rpgs. I even revisited it during the pandemic and was motivated to tackle Zelda 2 on NES.
What memories! This music takes me back! Timeless classic!
Really well done, i used to play this alot when i was young. Always wrote down that damn password wrong too lmao. Mantra is by far my favorite song in this game.
Yes it's a beautiful piece, which would almost make us forget the difficulty of entering the password.
This is such a nostalgic adventure to listen to! The tone and power of each piece is incredibly well balanced that it is able to evoke certain emotions at times that was missing in the original works.
Thank you so much. I tried to reproduce the emotions I felt while playing the game.
@@GabbPiano Yes, you empathized well in that regard.
Merci Gabb !!!
holy crap it's like this game's music was made for piano! This was amazing to listen to thanks for sharing your skills!! I dunno if you'll see this but think about maybe checking out Journey to Silius. That game is known to have amazing music! Another that might translate nicely into piano is The Magic of Scheherazade. That game had me going to back it often because of it's music
The Magic of Scheherazade for sure! Please, @Gabb please!
So much about this is incredibly well done, from the arrangement, to the sequencing, to the actual piano performance, (so many crazy challenging parts you just sailed through!!), and even the little pixel art animations from the game that take you by the hand on the walk down memory lane.
Faxanadu's music is close to my heart; the way it so elegantly combines baroque influences, unusual angular harmonies, and recurring rhythmical ideas, to create little masterpieces of intricate, condensed beauty. I love how true to the original score you stayed, whenever you could - every slight alteration or variation you made was always in humble service to the composition and the flow of the pieces, never imposing any foreign ideas, but simply rearranging and subtle editing, making the entire sequence work miraculously well.
This piano version actually highlights how beautiful, creative, and deeply interesting Jun Chikuma's compositions truly were. You have done a great service to the remembrance of her work, and I am truly grateful to have found this video! ❤️
I'm just as grateful that you found it. Your view of my work is particularly complimentary, poetic and encouraging. I also totally share your analysis and feelings about Jun Chikuma's music and I'm delighted that you like this adaptation. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your valuable comment!
The Towers theme is amazing. Sounds so evil
Fantastic, so much detail, so much heart, bravo! Thank you Jun CHIKUMA, thank you Gabb!
❤💖
Thanks man. This music is a God sent miracle. Peace dude.
How did I miss this one?! Amazing playing!
Superb work, Gabb. Thanks for doing this soundtrack justice.
The UA-cam algorithm gods blessed my ears with this awesome video of one of my favorite games back in my childhood years. 😊
Bravo!
Ohlala les souvenirs! Merci!
impossible not to listen to the whole thing
Wow :D That was an absolutely brilliant piano interpretation of a beautiful track! Awesome work and amazing skills as well, I really enjoyed this one
Thank you Ria, it's always a pleasure to read you. I'm glad you like these compositions, they definitely deserve to be considered and I really enjoyed playing them.
😯 Amazing! You even nailed the crazy boss music at 9:17
This whole thing made me smile so much my face hurts.
REALLY AWESOME. GRACIAS!! MEMORIES FROM 1995
Again..SOOOOO AMAZING!
You a legend Gabby!
I love to listen when I fall asleep and imagine the journey of the game I finished when I was 12. In 1989. Beautifully nostalgic my dude. Only problem is some of the songs jam so hard I dont fall asleep 😂
Oh thank you very much, it is entirely in this spirit that I carry out my renditions. To fall asleep, you can make a playlist with only the softest tracks of the game, such as King's Castle, Cathedral, Mantra, Mist... 🌛
thank you for bringing these compositions to the piano man. i've got no issue with chiptune music in general, but the sounds they use in faxanadu are so shrill, i'd never listen to them in my free time. this is so much easier to listen too
Beautifully done! Great game with such a memorable soundtrack! Remember your mantra!
From Sydney, Australia. After reading the title to this vid, i was not sure how good the music to faxanadu would sound on piano. Sounds absolutely amazing!! You are very talented and have done justice to the faxanadu soundtrack
Thank you very much, Andrew! I think these beautiful compositions by Jun Chikuma would sound great on any instrument.
@@GabbPiano you're welcome Gabb. Agree. I played faxanadu as an 8 year old in 1990 and the music brings back great memories for me
i played this as a kid.... sir you are A+
one of my favourite songs. its so unknown and so powerful
When I just opened this video I recognized you immediately from the video 'battle of Olympos'. I enjoyed that very much. And now this one genius play.
Thank you. You are the best!
Thank you very much! I'm glad you liked these two covers.
Merci
Merci à toi. 🙂
I'm a little late to this party as I didn't want to listen to your rendition until I was familiar with the original. This was a game that went under my radar when I was a kid - I was aware of it through Nintendo Power magazine but never got a chance to play it. What a wonderful hidden gem it was! The music is so uniquely beautiful and you did a fantastic job as usual. Thank you for inspiring me to try games I never would have otherwise noticed.
So what's next on the agenda? I'm sure you already have something in the works, and I can only hope it's something like Shadowgate, Little Nemo, or one of the Genesis Sonic games.
Thank you for your message. I am very happy that I made you want to play this great game.
Yes, of course, that's Sonic I was talking about in our previous conversation. A dozen videos are coming very soon. I'm in the middle of editing the first one. ;) (I would like to be as quick to edit as the Sega mascot is to run 😆).
I gave the 666 like to this vidéo ! This game was one of my favorite when i was young the OST is in my head forever, great job, it's nice to ear it on piano. I love it !!!!
Thank you for this precious 666th like.
How does this not have more views? Bravo!! Amazing renditions. 🎶
Thank you ! ✨😃
My music Twitch community brought me here, and I'm happy to have found you. You sound wonderful
I thank you very much, as well as your Twitch community. :)
Omg!! This guy is amazing!! I love this soundtrack and he nailed it! 👍😀
Absolutely magical. And I love the braid.
This was a fantastic rendition!
Que de souvenirs. Merci!
I've been playing this game for several decades now and always loved the music. I'm glad I stumbled upon this rendition.
This is wonderful, thank you for publishing this. I love this OST, I was just listening to the original a few days ago so this is most likely why this popped up in my recommendations.
Great! I'm glad to have popped in your recommendations. Thank you for the comment.
this game and it's OST are so underrated ! Love your rendition of it
Yes, this is a very great game with a magical OST. Thank you, Arphix!
I feel like I want to replay the entire game but use your music in the background for a new experience and perspective. Excellent playing and thanks for making this video.
Thank you for this kind feedback!
YES
This was absolutely fantastic.
Excellent rendition! 🙂
Wow, that was absolutely stunning! Thanks for that! Your piano playing is fantastic! Looks like your video is as underrated as the game was, but im glad i found them, both.
Thank you so much! This game was still somewhat successful. It's an honor for me that you put me on the same level.
This is really really good and the music in this game really transported you.
Thx so much!

Yes, Jun Chikuma offers us with this OST a very beautiful musical journey which largely contributes to the charm of the game. Thank you for the kind comment!
Amazing that you have mastered the music. Flawlessly. I am blown away.
Thank you very much!
@@GabbPiano This is one of the most challenging pieces ever written for a game. Ever. I applaud you. Liked and subscribed. You are all over my feeds now. Unfortunately, only a small percentage of the population recognizes your gift. I honestly didn't think it could be done, and here you are tickling the ivories like it was grade 1 piano all over again. I really appreciate your hard work. I can say a lot more, but I digress. Please know and understand that your work is LOVED and APPRECIATED!
That's so sweet, thank you!
That was incredible! Thank you.
Exceptionnel, quel merveilleux pianiste, bravo
Oh merci beaucoup !
