    While working on this video, we found some interesting facts on the age of consent today in different countries - in some, it is as low as 11 years, and in others as high as 21.
    India's own trajectory of the age of consent goes to show how it depends on cultural context, and also on how perceptions change with time. What do you think?

    When I researched on the topic 'why Marital rape is still not criminalazed in India?', I found such ridiculous statements in the Name of "Indian Culture" stating why Marital rape should not be criminalized. Seriously what's wrong with these people?. RAPE IS RAPE. Hiding behind excuses like 'oh it will damage the concept of family, marriage, trust in partners, how will men prove their innocence'. Face the reality, however you call it, Without consent or under threat forced intercourse is RAPE. Thank you for creating awareness on such important topics.

      @5 G so the man can leave his wife on this ground, right? Why will he force her, when according to you, she's "denying sex without a reason"?

    • @varsharane5768
      @varsharane5768 4 роки тому +10

      @5 G should there be a reason to deny sex? ‘I don’t want to have sex’ is reason enough. When the other person does NOT want to have sex, FORCING them to have sex in any way causes mental and emotional trauma to them. Do you ever think about that? Or do you always only think about yourself? Maybe that’s why couples should talk about all of this BEFORE they tie the knot so the husband/wife is secure in knowing that sexual intercourse will be provided to them whenever they desire it coz even their partner wants it. Understand the difference between wanting and giving. YOU are the person who WANTS...the person has to GIVE. In Indian culture, the giver is always given more importance and hence, whatever they want goes. Also not allowing sexual jntervourse is grounds for immediate divorce. So if the husband is not satisfied with how much he is getting, he has all the power to leave his wife. And the wife should be ok with that. Coz if she doesn’t love him enough to even sleep with him...why is she with him. Sex might not be an important part of a relationship...but it is a cornerstone. If she is withholding sex...there’s some deeper problem in the marriage. And it’s better to call it off than stretch it and torture each other!

    • @srinaveena8699
      @srinaveena8699 4 роки тому +8

      @5 G Your reasoning is laughable. What should be considered as 'Valid Reason' for refusing sex?.
      And if your only point regarding sex is 'Sex is biological need' please consider, Are you a being with 6 senses or being with 5 or less senses. Because they are the only one focus only biological needs and functions. Because they don't have self awareness. Even in animals and birds unwilling partner will deny if it's not interested.
      Refusing to have sex is within her rights even if she doesn't give reason. If the husband don't like that , they both can have a talk like, you know adults and decide what further steps should be taken in their life.
      Forcing and compelling uninterested partner is called ABUSE.
      Forcing what you think is right on your partner is ABUSE.
      Thinking only about yourself and your mental health and emotional health is also ABUSE in a relationship.
      Just Because you are in a relationship doesn't mean you are owed a woman's body or sex.

      There are many things which are forced on men as well.Erection of penis is not a valid consent for example as given by Supreme consent and declaring someone rapist based on looks is in itself controversial.A woman declare a man to be rapist just because she doesn't like his looks or if he doesn't agree with her.Such law can be be misused.If such a law is brought there will be an open gender war

      @@Udta_teer_leliya Every law can be misused. We have to be the one to make sure that the law can't be misused. Saying 'this can be misused so we shouldn't pass the law' is not reasonable. Your logic can be applied to every other law. So what is your reply to that?. That we shouldn't pass this because it can be misused??..
      And so what if marriage rate is reduced?. There is no logic in saying we have higher marriage rate if there is no value in that family. Don't blame feminism for this. If people realised and asking equality for both partners in a marriage, that's basic human decency. Don't blame religion. I am talking as a human being who is asking equality for both spouses.
      And let's not deny the fact in a marriage a man can be raped as well. It's not a 'woman' issue. It's about breach of human rights of a spouse in marriage.
      Gender based stereotypes exists on both genders. We should not forget that. I agree with your point on where men get judged immediately without proof on certain matters.
      We first should acknowledge that our society has flaws, then only we can make it better.
      Blaming other factors, societies, religions won't change that.

    According to Mahabharata, a woman's "consent" age is 3 years after her 1st period. Girls in the Pauranic times were not allowed to marry until she finished 3 years after her first period. This is why all the heroines of ancient scriptures, like Ramayana and Mahabharata were always mentioned to be 'shodasha-varshiya' or16-years old. It is right to consummate the marriage within 16 days of her period after the wedding then because that is when the ovulation happens, or in short, the woman can conceive. But for that the girl had to be mature enough. When did this age went from 16 to 10 is a mystery to me.

    It's a shame that India as a country is trying to get the status of a developed country, still has rules like this. Unbelievable. No should always means no. No matter in what relationship you are. All these religions and their rules are developed by men to show their power over women. Unfortunately some women agrees and assist these men too. This subservient feeling in women is so deep rooted that I doubt we will probably not be able to trace back it's origins in history. If every woman in this world fight together, help each other, instead of protecting men, even though it is there son, husband, and father, I believe we will be able to overcome these in human rules and get truly liberised.

    Hinduism is not a prescriptive religion, so there are no definitive guidelines on what should be practiced. Child marriage was a cultural vice which was initiated due to invasions and occupancy of India which threatened the safety of (especially) women. This led to terrible wrongs such as dowry and sati being practiced too which were not the norm in ancient India. Linking what was practiced back then to Hinduism is actually very damaging without the cultural context of the time. Child marriage is permissible in certain religions and even modern American culture but not Hinduism if you go by legitimate Vedic literature (manusmriti for example is a law textbook for society at a point in time - not religious scripture). Since Hinduism is not a prescriptive religion with set rules feel free to dispute what I’ve said. If you look into it ancient Indian women were actually quite liberated unlike today.

    • @adwaitab.3622
      @adwaitab.3622 4 роки тому

      The question is not about Hinduism or any other religion. Religion were created by men about thousands of years back. Women have a right to live a dignified life irrespective of whichever religion she follows. Whether any religious books has mentioned child marriage should be of no importance to the Government. The importance of having a democratic country is seperation of religion from constitution. And this is how it should function.

    • @shrutisharma4586
      @shrutisharma4586 4 роки тому

      Adwaita Bhaduri a separate religion and constitution is not what was in place by the British at the time of the Raj or even now. British law is based on Christianity and Britain is a Christian country. Mixing religion with law has not been detrimental to Britain. Modern religions are simply put a set of instructions for people to follow to behave in a civil way appropriate to the time that they were created. Hinduism does not contain a set of rules so is adaptable to modern times. My point is why is it that only Hinduism gets demonised as a religion when we talk of social ills of the past? There’s no conversation on the context of why things were the way they were in the first place. Hindus were always prevented from gaining an education and learning about their religion by the invaders and subsequent occupiers, and that ignorance still exists today. So many Indians are afraid of being proud of their identity because they still don’t understand it. My point being that just like all Muslims aren’t jihadists, all Hindus are not ignorant idiots who follow cultural customs like child marriage. There should be a separation of religion from this debate. Also, when conversations like this occur, the British are glorified in a way from making reforms that stop cultural evils like sati. Maybe if the native population of India had not been suppressed and drained of education practices like this wouldn’t have come about. I can’t believe I’m sticking up for Indian identity when Indians don’t even see me as their own (I’m British born and raised), but I find it saddening that Hindus in India are embarrassed of their own religion without understanding its evolution and beauty. Hinduism does not suppress women. Name an ancient society where swayamvars took place or where women had political power or even freedom to obtain an education. If you read Jane Austin for example you’ll discover how prudish British society was just a 100 or so years ago with arranged marriages being the norm. I would hate for Indians to erase their own heritage and religious practices. I hope that whenever I visit in the future with my children that there’s a little bit of true Indian culture left that I can introduce them to.

    • @shrutisharma4586
      @shrutisharma4586 4 роки тому

      prak she very clearly mentioned how child marriage was outlined in scripture...it’s not. According to Hindu scriptures, the ideal age for a woman to marry is over 18, whereas for a man it’s after 25 (post gaining a proper education).

    • @shrutisharma4586
      @shrutisharma4586 4 роки тому

      prak legitimise Hindu scriptures don’t include manusmriti for a valid reason. People who follow that book are obviously misinformed as it is a book of ancient law and not religion. My point is that when topics like this are mentioned on a public platform that people need to be given the context behind the practices otherwise it leads to misinformation and resentment of your history.
