    I always thought it was normal for your jaw to click and pop when talking/eating and for it to feel sore at the end of the day, this is amazing! I’m going to try these every day for a month and see if you can save my health again! Love you Dr Jo!!!

      @@AskDoctorJo How often do you recommend these stretches should be done? Once a day? I wouldn’t want to over do it.

  • @AskDoctorJo
    @AskDoctorJo  11 років тому +75

    You should try to do them at least 2 times a day until the pain starts to decrease, then you can do them once a day, until you don't feel any more pain. For maintenance, you should still do them 2-3 times a weeks for several weeks. I hope that helps!! Good luck!!

      @@sarahstockton7097 I think that what happened is that I just adopted a better facial posture/attitude if that makes sense, I learned to relax my face and jaw. This video kinda pointed out what was going on and I used it to develop positive habits. Not had a single problem since very soon after I started doing this. Generally now I just let my jaw hang a little while keeping my mouth closed. Keep at it hope you get over it very soon.

    Magda G. A. Many times doing a massage at the TMJ helps. Using a warm compress for 5-10 minutes before you massage and stretch might also help loosen the muscles up. Good luck!

    Omg I have chronic pain from my TMJ disc displacement it’s been 4 months and I lost 20kg and got depressed and my mum rushed me to the ER 2 weeks ago after taking 900mg of tramadol on accident in the night due to the pain :( but luckily I threw up some of it so the doctor at the ER said my blood sample was not dangerously bad. I discovered your video on box breathing and pursed lip exercises soon after the night at the ER and then I found this video you made 11 years ago! It definitely sounds like a TMJ issue. Try these stretches for a few weeks. If you don't get much relief, then you should go see a doctor. You can also get an order from a doctor to try dry needling from a PT. It works really well for TMJ issues, but the PT has to be certified to do it. Good luck!!

      I've been experiencing something weird. I clench at night with suction if that makes sense. I have a bad habit of moving my jaw to one side. usually to the right. its harder to move to the left. i think i do this to satisfy my anxiety. its starting to affect my speech. It seems like I have to concentrate to talk. my jaw feels out of alignment when I talk.

    • @AskDoctorJo

    OMG!!! I was super stressed out about a month ago and was grinding my teeth in my sleep really really bad. I have had TMJ for 20 years so it’s pretty loose in there now so it rarely flairs up. Well after several nights of some serious teeth grinding, I woke up super sore and couldn’t open my mouth wide enough to eat a hamburger off the value menu. I just saw the picture on this video in the list for TMJ pain for a friend and saw what looks like her grabbing her jaw and pulling it forward (hadn’t watched the video yet) so I mimicked it and my jaw popped back into place. I didn’t know it was out of place to that extent! Now I can fully open my mouth!!! Brilliant!!! Thank you thank you thank you!!!!

      AskDoctorJo Hey, I don't think I have TMJ, but my jaw cracks on the left side when I open it all the way... It doesn't hurt or anything, it just bothers me.
      Should I do the same exercises? Thanks.

    • @AskDoctorJo
      @AskDoctorJo  10 років тому

      ValladaoMateus That could be TMJ dysfunction. It doesn't necessarily have to be painful. I think they might be worth a try as long as they don't cause pain. Good luck!

    I’ve been having TMJ pains all week, likely from grinding my teeth. I’ve got Invisalign which helped me greatly but it still comes back periodically.
    I just tried these method, already felt so much relief. Will be trying to do more excersices as such to help strengthen the area! Thank you ❤

    It kind of depends on what is causing it. If it is a muscle imbalance, then no it is not permanent. However, if it is something specific with the joint itself, then yes, but it is manageable. Have you gone to a dentist or TMJ specialist yet?

    I'm so embarrassed because I actually work for a dentist who has prescribed night guards and small devices that prevent the teeth from coming into contact (clenching); but according to some patients, they don't seem to work or are super uncomfortable. I clench in my sleep and have what's called a crossbite so my jaw aches on one side and one of my canines is actually crooked from the forces of my bite over the years. I'm getting invisalgn soon, but hopefully I can use these tips in the meantime. I've been taking ibuprofen like tick tacks to get through the day and sleep comfortably 😷

    • @AskDoctorJo

      I hope these help. Unfortunately, many of the devices that are suppose to stop clenching actually encourage it. When they go all the way to the back teeth, it makes our jaw want to clench more. Good luck!

    That last one really just helped right now, completely took the pain away. My wisdom teeth started growing in when I got braces back in high school in 2014 and my insurance wants me to pay thousands more dollars on top of the thousands I paid for the braces and my wisdom teeth at this point are still in and completely horizontal and have shifted my teeth even more, I've been dealing with jaw pain for years and headaches and eyeball headaches and I'm only 22, it sucks but your method helped me out

    Dizziness is not a normal symptom. Any time you have dizziness, you should really go get it checked out. Sometimes vessels can be getting compressed in the neck/head area that causes dizziness, and that can be dangerous. Good luck!

    This helped me so much! I saw an acupuncturist, got a mouth guard from my dentist, and saw 4-5 chiropractors. The last chiropractor helped by putting a glove on, and using her finger and adjusting the joint, but it wouldn't stay. These exercises have finally relieved my pain, and I can keep my jaw in place. Thanks!!!
