Lovely analysis. What you missed is that the Heptapod's circular melody and language is from my work "Erin", which Jóhann Jóhannsson requested that I re-record to be part of the score. While I couldn't do that (at that time, in 2016, I was at work on a commission for a choral work, "Murmuration for Chibok" for the Young Peoples Chorus of New York City), I encouraged him to use it and pitch-shift it, as needed. It was not credited on the original film when it hit theaters but crediting was later done properly on the vinyl release and dvds. "Heptapod B", "Teaching Montage", "End Credits" and several other works from the score, make extensive use of "Erin" in both the imaginary language I created, the tune I composed and the fast-moving minimal patterning just before the "Wo - ta - wotah ..." appears. These cues are now are credited as co-composed with me.

I thought I couldn't be any more in love with this film. I was wrong. This sort of exposition is so valuable to people like me who want to appreciate art but don't always know where or how to look. Thank you.

Johannsson was on the cusp of being a composing giant. But I'd say what he left us is a small but monumental catalogue. I think his influence will be felt in more ways than we can know.
Also Arrival's score should've been Oscar nominated and won. Stupid rules.

Out of all of his catalogue, I only know a handful of his albums - but after listening to them for dozens and dozens of times (especially Englaborn), I can safely say he was one of the most special composers that ever made it into the mainstream... even as briefly as it was...

I noticed the way it was composed as well was non linear, and I realized it by ear for the song at the end for the beginning credits scene, only on the second time I ever watched arrival after years… and that shocked me because the music was a direct reflection to the language and how the aliens think

Arrival has been for quite a while now one of the few movies I consider my fully favourite, the music being one of those pieces of art I could only admire without truly understanding it... until this video.
While my practical musical knowledge is limited I greatly appreciate your explanation of what for long I considered Johannsson's best work (Last And First Men took the gold recently) and now my admiration for Arrival's OST has once again turned positive from the angered admiration I previously had for it... Jóhann deprived the world of his amazing talent far too soon :(

Johannsson was an incomparable composer. He had such a distinct and sophisticated sound and the way he worked with dynamics and orchestration was absolutely masterful. Knowing that we will never get the joy of hearing new compositions by this brilliant man makes me sad... however he will not be forgotten!
Great video! Some of the links in the description don't work anymore but I would love to know more about Johannssons scores and study them... any idea where to look?

If Johannsson had lived, we may have ended up getting a Dune movie composed by him by the end of this year :( He composed 3 of Villeneuve's movies (Prisoners, Sicario, Arrival) and had done work on a fourth (Bladrunner 2049). The world lost someone really special with his passing...

I am not sure if it's an obvious or even valid association, but when I watched it for the first time, for some seconds I actually thought that this string music from the beginning was the famous third movement of Beethoven's 15 string quartet. And though it turned out that it wasn't, I still don't think it was a random similarity. This third movement is preceded by a subtitle "Heiliger Dankgesang eines Genesenen an die Gottheit, in der lydischen Tonart" which means “Holy Song of Thanksgiving of a Convalescent to the Deity, in the Lydian Mode”, and the story behind this is that Beethoven recovered from a serious disease. So that's actually a reversed film situation where Hannah dies from an incurable illness, and Richter's music does really sound a bit like a "pessimistically inversed" variation of Beethoven's quartet movement.
