UPDATE: The Sony a1 WILL close the shutter when in silent mode, but you have to change an extra setting I didn't know about - MENU → (Shooting) → [Shutter/Silent] → [Silent Mode Settings] → Target Function settings → Shutter When Pwr Off. Set that to "Not Target", obviously. Maybe that's the default and I screwed it up?
Tony Northrup complains about his favorite camera of all time, the Sony a1, and he compares it to the Canon R5, which is also great.

Sony should have never added it, its a bad idea since the shutter is more likely to get damaged then the sensor. Both canon and sony tech support people admit this in private and if asked advice against using it. I keep it off and that means at times i need to clean the sensor but unlike Tony who seems to get dust in his sensor every 5min i get it once a month or so and i change lenses a lot.

I was considering the A1, but I am already unhappy with the software of my aSiii. I like the results in 4K even so the video tracking doesn’t work depending on the selected codec, but why is Sony not able to develop software? I can’t upgrade the firmware from my current MAC OS, I had to find an old laptop to do that. The smartphone sync is just rubbish, I am an experienced computer research person, but this interface to the smartphone app is just unusable. Who the hell is writing the software?

My EOS R does this same sort of intermittent "slap back delay" thing and it drives me crazy. I never experienced it (yet) with my R6, but until I just heard it in Tony's video I thought I was just sort of insane-- I haven't found a clear cut "problem/solution" on the issue before and couldn't figure out where in my work flow it was (only sometimes) coming from (audio was written to card with the issue). Okay those 5 points are all very minor except the last one, so this confirms this is a great camera.
#1 : UI, ok that's a personal preference, at least this is the most customizable camera ever
#2 : shutter closing, user error: Silent Mode is NOT electronic shutter mode, it means "everything is silent", and that's why it's not closing the shutter because that would produce some sound. Just don't use the silent mode and use the electronic shutter, problem solved.
#3 : not always 30fps, well of course, there is another requirement being: "you need to know what you're doing", and obviously if the shutter speed is too low, then the max fps will be lower, it's quite obvious.
#4 : pixel shift useless, so don't use it, problem solved
#5 : awful screen, that's the only valid complaint actually, yes the screen is not great but at least it has the best EVF ever, so you just need to start using the EVF more

If you get used to Nikon camera it is hard to use Sony a 1 but what I hate to use Nikkon Z9 is just that it is not much heavier to carry around especially when you have to hike in mountain for landscape photography. If Nikon Z9 could be as light as that of Sony a1, there should be more buyers who were Nikkon users before but wished to upgrade there gears. Sony A 1 is not good in landscape photography as far as images quality is concerned in comparison with Nikon camera D850 or Z 7 II.

I know the Menu key already does that, but it's annoying to always have to go to your left hand (or cross your right hand over to the left side of the camera) for such a commonly-used operation. And make this improvement available on existing cameras via firmware update, please.

The keeper rate for moving subjects is much higher than the r5 as the af system is the best that exists. I agree with all your points, But the price is the main issue I hate about the camera. after four years Sony finally updated the A9 with a new sensor and view finder. so the price should be like an updated A9ll. so maybe $4900. not $6500. and I think even at $4900 it should have a top of the line back touch screen that you can see in bright light. and that pulls out in portrait orientation. the A1 is not a huge and heavy dual grip camera. and it shouldn't be priced like one. I might've considered buying it at $4500 dollars. but at $6500 I will be sticking with my A7r lll. and actually the price of the A1 has made me think allot about switching brands again. but I hate how huge and heavy the new Canon 85 f1.2 L is. and Nikon is just not up to par with the focusing. and I also hate how huge and heavy the Nikon 50 f1.2 is. so at least Sony has the way smaller and lighter 50 f1.2 GM and the really small and light 55 f1.8. and the 630g Sigma 85 f1.4 art. I guess all three companies have things I like and things I don't like. but the price of the A1 is way to high, but I know people try to justify it by talking about the price of flagship cameras. but like I said. its just an updated A9.

A better solution would be to create a Garmin Connect IQ App and have the ability for the camera to connect to a Garmin device. More accurate, more reliable, and lower power.

None of these really seem to be problems to me, at least not ones I've experienced but I use a different model. I think a lot of these come down to the difference between using a camera for a bit and owning the camera and mastering it as well as different people having different needs and preferences. As for the specs that can't be achieved unless certain settings are on, every manufacturer seems to have that. I think it might grow on you a bit if you owned it. Maybe it would be your favorite and maybe not but I can't believe you would hate it. So far professional photographers seem to like it, even in bright sunlight. I think this is the first bad review I've seen on it, we all have different needs and preferences though. The only con for me is the incredibly high price, you spend several thousand dollars BEFORE you even buy lenses or accessories. This makes it inaccessible to many photographers.

I watch your channel religiously and I’m not sure how I missed this review before taking the plunge and moving to Sony by purchasing the a1. Mine went into a boot loop in the middle of a shoot last week and, while I’m lucky this happened two months before the limited warranty expired, it ultimately makes me doubt the reliability of Sony from this point forward. The camera worked flawlessly before the wifi gave out, triggering a crippling boot loop shortly after- forcing me to send it into their repair facility. Sony told me they’ve never heard of any known issues like this and I haven’t either…until I started digging deeper and seeing SO many similar issues other users are facing (a7s3., fx3, fx30, a1) Yea, I get what others are saying with Sony neglecting firmware updates in relation to newer, cheaper models and their newer features to an extent but I was happy with this camera’s specs when i purchased it. My problem is that Sony isn’t acknowledging these cameras randomly dying from what I’ve heard are faulty main boards. Its so unsettling that I’ve invested so much money on new lenses and cards and all the other things during this transition, only to be swept under the rug and ignored by Sony like so many others. I would love to make Sony taste their medicine like you say but a lot of us don’t have that Northrup clout. I’m so far lost on how to handle this…how I spent so much money on what now seems like a luxurious paper weight (that I’m still paying my wife back for) 😢 anyway, Thank you for all of the content that you and Chelsea produce. Ok, good review, but honestly, I don’t understand why UA-cam reviewers keep coming back with the screen that does not flip out to the side, or that is useless under the sun. Why is it a drawback when one can use the Imaging Edge mobile software with a smartphone or an iPad. I use my Sony a7RII with a iPad mini all the time and it is way better than having a flip out screen, since I can walk around the camera with the iPad, see the camera image on the iPad from anywhere around the camera and release the shutter from the iPad!! And don’t tell me that one cannot do bird photography with an iPad, because no one will do it with a screen flipped out to the side either. For bird photography, the viewfinder is the way to go and there is no problem with it. But for any type of photography that one would do with a flip out screen (landscape, portrait, studio, etc), an iPad with the Imaging Edge software is a bloody good way to go.

Nothing is perfect. It is just very good. I thought of getting a Fujifilm GFX100s instead of a Sony A1, but the Fuji lens prices are eye-wateringly high and I think that 50 mp is enough for a landscape camera. I had planned to get the Fuji with a couple of lenses and keep my A9, but moving between systems will always be expensive. I believe, despite its flaws, the A1 will be a better all-rounder and paradoxically cheaper.

Thank you Tony to make us realize that we basically do not have to worry about hating anything about this camera :-) I would have liked a 2 axis tilt screen, but that is pretty minor. Btw if you are shooting sports, which is what this camera is primarily for, the R5 e-shutter does not really qualify, which btw causes the camera to overheat if shooting a lot in a moderately warm conditions. For instance my R5 shuts down in indoor swimming meets if I use it in e-shutter long enough. So stop saying that the R5 is pretty much a better camera. The A1 is in a different category when you actually need to count on your camera, R5 makes a great second body. The like dislike ratio might be good for some reflection....

    1. Can't get 30FPS if your lens is old/slow.... hey, that's not the camera's shortcoming it's the lens' shortcoming. Like, "Hey, I got this tiny countertop oven but my 16' frozen pizza can't fit in it... BAD OVEN... BAD!
    2. You blame Sony for only making technical specs that don't apply in the real world but then complain that the camera doesn't give you a warning that your pixel shift image had movement. This is a "technical (non-real world) complaint"... if the 16 images are only combined out of camera then the camera lacks the horsepower/ability to analyze that data to GIVE YOU such a warning. And, NO CAMERA does this, not just the A1 - so it's a problem that's evidently not (in the real world) in-camera friendly. T'would be nice I agree but no on has it for a reason. It's not shortcoming they should have "fixed"... also, pixel shift has always been mostly for in-studio use. No movement/controlled environment are it's given requirements for every manufacturer.
    3. Yup - on the closed shutter setting.
... so, that "solves" 3 of your five complaints. Leaving only 2. Should retitle this. "I only found TWO reasonable things I don't like about this camera!"

I'm with you, Tony. It does seem like a lot of money for what it is. I think Sony rationalizes the a1 price being higher than the R5 because it's like an a7riv, an a9ii, and an a7siii all in one, where the R5 lacks the video capabilities of the a7siii. It's reliable modes are similar to the eos R. In that respect, I could see a $5500 price for the a1, but still can't justify the $6500.

I and many people got the A1, if people buy it in numbers high enough make a profit the price while it might hurt is justified.

Are there 5 things that you hate about the Canon R5?

5:58, if you want a good rear screen, well get a Nikon Z, they are awesome. Can’t wait for the Z9 😊 I hope Nikon will once spend also vertical screens to their bodies like the X-T3 or GFX100S has it.

Number 7. The lens eject button is on the grip side, making it dangerous.

I love the rant. The passion, the energy. Jared Polin way. Just add like visual aids ( the boards that show what you talk about so we can fast forward to it later.) I love the video over all.

I don't think Tony has ever found a camera that does not have problems to date, there is an old saying "you can't please all the people all the time" the answer to your problem is quite simple if you like the Canon buy it and don't use the Sony but stop being so bloody arrogant like your opinion is the only one that matters and that every camera manufacturer should stop and listen To Tony Northrup but I guess you have to be controversial to try and keep your subscribers and view numbers for earnings.
