A lot of people think The Who is a great, legendary band. They point to the virtuoso musicianship, great songwriting, genius concept albums and, of course, that rock opera. This would all be well and good, except for the fact that this band sucks.
We've all been lied to about The Who. Nobody here was anywhere near the best there ever was at anything they did. (Nor were they the second or even third best, as is often the follow-up argument.) In this episode, Mark and Tyler turn over every stone to try and discover what anyone ever saw or heard in this band... and, well, it gets ugly...

Haha this part cracked me up. Don’t get me wrong, i get why on SOME tracks you might want to have an acoustic track for sonic purposes and filling out some space, but every song?? Come the fuck on. I actually do love The Who but that’s some bullshit.

Moon ruled both on and off stage and can't nobody front on Entwistle. Took Townshend decades to learn how to do a decent solo. When I finally saw him do one on a reboot tour I was shocked. Was he finally getting lessons?
Agreed on Entwistle. Moon was basically the Drunken Master starring Jackie Chan. To be honest, I can't watch him play at all, it makes my eye twitch.
Mr. Bungle covered a Dr. Seuss song on their 1992 tour. "5,000 Fingers of Dr. T"
I do like the 1971-1981 Who a lot more than their earlier stuff, and Pete Townshend is nowhere near the top guitar players.
But The Who still rock my world I must say, especially Entwistle.

Who's Next is only praised because of three songs on it. The rest of the album is boring as hell. Quadrophenia gang!

I know this podcast is basically sarcasm, because you say in this one that Queen is a kickass band, yet you made a whole podcast about how much of a crap band they were. I also noticed the same evidence in your slayer episode, where you highly praise Metallica, though of course you have a two part podcast on how much Metallica sucks. I’m pretty sure this is all a joke, with some semblance of truth every now and again. I really do enjoy your guys humor regardless. I hope you continue To make these, because they are not only highly entertaining, but they are also very original. Sometimes we need to joke about the artists we hold so dear, because in the end, what we think great music, could just as well be perceived as complete garbage to another, it’s all just opinion, and even though I feel you guys are definitely joking for the most part, there are definitely people out there that agree 100 percent and that okay. We shouldn’t get angry and frustrated over people slamming what we love. People deserve to have their opinions respected if they are respectful. The thing that gets me is getting outraged over an opinion contrary to their own. If we really believed the bands we love are incredible, then nobody’s opinion should even phase us.

Actually they said something in the context that Metallica at least follows a musical composition structure vs slayer but they still suck or something like that.
The entire premise is lifted from the Onion's _"Your Favourite Band Sucks"_ t-shirt; I bought one circa 2010.
Listening to the hosts speculate about the reactions their fans would get wearing said t-shirt was mildly amusing; I wore mine to and from work through central Sydney for years and clocked up a grand total of a single verbal reaction (and Aussies aren't exactly wilting lillies ;)

It seems like about 50% satire and 50% truth. Most bands with any longevity have made some good stuff and some terrible stuff. I cant stand the who, queen, zeppelin etc so its hilarious to me, but even when they talk about bands i like the criticism is mostly warranted, and still funny.

The irony is pete townshend says he doesnt even give a rats ass about playing nowadays, he only does it to fund his boat racing lifestyle. In the same interview when asked if hes like proud/happy that so many fans still love the stuff today and hes like eh, im just supplying a product, i really dont care.
I have a few songs from them I think are pretty good, but truth be told its like a handful of fingers versus anywhere near a lot of their other stuff.

I love the who, definitely after quadrophenia they should have ended, everything after that is rubbish, I'm a psychiatrist, the tommy album is a great album, tremendously deep, without leaving the humor and the "not taking it seriously" obviously, they knew that they were half a joke. What I wanted to tell you, if there are recordings of where they play tremendously well, Live at Leeds, the first song, heaven and hell, listen to Pete's solo, a friend with whom we got together to listen to music always has the theory that it was not He and they brought someone else ejejjeej. Is it possible that most 'great' bands scale Everest a time or two and then trip over their shoestrings the rest of the time?
I was able to laugh along them 'til this point, didn't mind then roasting Beatles, Stones, Grateful Dead and whoever, and I actually think most of grunge and early noughties metal were very dull types of music :D

For a classic rock band of their stature, The Who had a shockingly low number of albums that anybody actually liked. Aside from the early singles, every single radio hit they ever had comes from only 3 albums: Tommy, Who's Next and Who Are You. Tommy is a particularly bad album. An undercooked, half-assed, amateurish, completely incomprhensible and pretentious mess of an album. It sounds like an interminable series of demos for songs that should never have been recorded. Simply awful. People only pretend to like it because the critics told them to.
No, I love it. And I give a shit on critics.

It is a tradition still alive and well today; if it is wildly popular and makes millions, - it means nothing, if not being a stamp of dubious quality.
If I’m being honest...the ONLY reason I even know about this band is because of CSI in like 2005.

I know this is podcast is sort of a joke, and I like this podcast - but I am giving this a dislike anyway. The Who is the greatest band of all time.
My takeaway: if Limp Bizkit is better than your favorite band (and Limp Bizkit definitely sucks) then your favorite band absolutely sucks!

Hilarious! The Who are my favorite band ever but your video here had me laughing hard. There is a kernel of truth in most of what you say but your take is so over exaggerated it is a laugh riot. Two things, though. British bands took American rock and roll and supercharged it. That much is obvious by listening to Eddie Cochran’s version of Summertime Blues and then The Who’s version. Also you can’t be serious about Limp Bizkit being some kind of awesome band. That makes me suspicious of your entire musical taste.

I know it's just a gag to generate a ton of hate-response, but wait a minute you guys don't actually LIKE Limp Bizkit do you? Please tell me you're just using a terrible band as an example to make "The Who" fanboys mad. Live at Leeds. Keith Moon. Pete Townshend invented power-chords by the way but you already knew that right? I do agree that their radio songs are terrible and overlong it always makes me cringe when "Baba O'Reiley" or "Who the fuck are You" comes on when I'm at work. (I work in a warehouse and the classic rock station is the only thing everyone can agree on)

Queen was a good live band. The only rock opera Queen did was Bohemian Rhapsody, it is way overplayed, but Queen were never pretentious about the song, or their music. They always said it was meant to be taken as tongue in cheek. The problem with many other rock bands or concept albums and big philosophical ideas within music, is that many artists pretends that it is some life altering, spiritual experience. Most of the "artistic" types tends to over value their own opinions and work. Of course not everyone is going to enjoy Queen, but at least they never pretended they were busy creating live altering experiences with their music, they always had a comedic sense to their music. They never pretended to be anti establishment, only to sell out when it suited them. They were not hypocrites unlike a lot of other bands. And saying that we generally still like a lot of bands despite some these faults.
I always feel a flicker of shame when I listen to these podcasts because I remember a time when I did like [insert band name]. The Who, though, I got over pretty quickly, so I don't feel too bad.

This was great, but shouldn't have taken you until minute 14 to mention that they suck because they don't have good melodies. They are just in your face power chords, over and over, which makes them very annoying and nowhere near the level of other bands with good musicians and well written music/melodies. Entertaining listen tho.

The Who were cool when they were mod and ripping off the Kinks. "Can't Explain" and "My Generation" are pretty cool songs. Then they got super wanky and lame, the worst combination of lame concepts and lame songwriting. Of course they had some decent stuff slipping through, but they are no where near the Beatles, the Stones, the Kinks, hell...ELO...

My favorite moment in this entire series is at 7:48 when Tyler is in legitimate disbelief that Paul McCartney actually went “harder” musically than someone else. To be fair, quite a feat for the man who wrote “your mother should know” a year earlier
