“Dancing On Air” - The making of Barbie™ in the 12 Dancing Princesses
Вставка
- Опубліковано 21 чер 2019
- “Go behind-the-scenes with a real-life ballerina to see how she brought to life the princesses’ ballet choreography!” - Mattel 2006
In this documentary we are introduced to principal dancer with the NYC Ballet, Maria Kowroski, who up until 2006 had been the dancer for Barbie®. We get to see her everyday life, working as a professional dancer to how she trains for her performances. We are also shown to how the film was made using motion-capture sensors. This is one of my favorite documentaries of Maria. She’s my personal hero! 💖 - Розваги
Wow just want to say thank you all for the recent comments. Although I posted this video many months ago I’m surprised for its recent amount of numerous comments. Thank you all for the support! ❤️😌
My Doll Cabinet yay
Because youtube is suddenly recommending this video to us. But we aint complaining ❤️
I just got this video recommend to me and wow am I so glad it did! It was so cool to watch the choreography being made and the beautiful ballet coming to life on the screen! I never knew that they had gotten a real life ballerina and choreography for the ballet in the barbie movies! And hearing the magnificent music made me so nostalgic! This video was truly so amazing and insightful to watch, thank you so much for posting it!! I also wanted to ask if there are any other videos like this made for the other two barbie ballet movies? And if so if you could also post them I would so love to watch them! Thanks again!

No wonder the older Barbie movies were amazing. They were made into perfection and used real dancers.
Leia Sophia they actually cared
The old ones were magical while the new ones just lost all the care and love the old ones received from their makers.
And the message contained in them are not just some sappy morals. It ain't pointless or typical story morals, its actually beautiful
The new ones lost their magic
the new ones only a few are good but I prefer the old ones were beautiful and magical
this makes me sad. i miss these kind of barbie movies, i wish they'll make more barbie movies like this

Maria officially retires from the New York City Ballet this October, when she has her final show. She’s the company’s longest current member. She really was our childhood and I wish her the best.
Wait really :(
Why is she retiring?
@@IGUniverse most professional ballerinas retire around 35 and Maria Kowroski is currently 45 so I'd assume it's because she's 'old' for the industry. To be clear, she's just retiring from being a member of the NYC Ballet, she'll still be an artistic director for another ballet company. If you're interested in it, the new york times and some other journals have written articles about her career and retirement.

I really admire how there are teenagers and adults that still enjoy watching these movies. Y’know, most people would say, “ew, you watch Barbie? So that is why Barbie always got good ballet, not like other children's movies. Impressive!
I've worked with Maria, never realized she danced for barbie. I adore her teaching style and her kindness, it was an honor to experience her coaching.
That's awesome that they used the same lady to do barbie's dances in all 3 of those movies! I love the ballet movies and i wish they had made a few more of them. There's just something so classic and elegant about them.❤
Kelsey Peterson oh wait they do a dance with a real persona at the back?
@@sapphireandrews9260 yes. they filmed a real person doing all the dancing and then used that to make sure the animated dancing looked realistic. That's an old technique for making animated movies. Walt Disney used it on alot of his animated movies too.
I was thinking the same thing! Like how cool is it that they used the same women for all three barbie ballet movies! And I honestly have to say those three ( Barbie Swan Lake, Barbie Nutcracker, and Barbie twelve dancing princesses) are my favorite among the barbie movies! And like you said, I so wish they made more movies like those, they really were so majestic and imperial! Not to mention so aesthetically pleasing to watch!

Considering that a lot of late-90s, early-2000s animation was a bit trash (unless you were Pixar), I'm always surprised at how well made these direct-to-DVD Barbie movies are. The animation, design, and general artistry that went into them is still obvious 20 years later and I love that-- nothing was half-assed, and they still hold up today because of it. Even as an adult, I still like watching them. I really wish they would remake or adapt some of these for a large theatrical release or a stage musical. With just a few tweaks and a bigger budget, I think they could really rake in some money.
I would love to see especially Princess and the Pauper as a live-action remake

This girl not only made her dreams come true but she also made mine and I'm sure 3/4 of the children who grew up on Barbie movies,'s dreams come true and fantasies come to life hahahahaha it's just so amazing to see that the magic encircling this magical dance by Genevieve and Derek was actually real!
Barbie made me take ballet lessons for 7 years since I was 6. I stopped due to school but not before my joints formed and these days, dancing to the music of any of the ballet Barbie songs became a therapeutic exercise (as well as regular exercise)
I hope she realizes how much she’s influenced us all. To this day I still try to do the dances and movements. These movies made my childhood, so much so that I’m now 18 and listening to this and all the music at 1am and crying because nostalgia 😂
The fact that she lived and did all of the romantic dances barbie did 😭😭😭💗
I’m 18 and I watched this movie when I was little and I NEVER knew people danced to the song like I would always thought that the animators were the ones who did but this is so cool!! Like she dances beautifully!! I love this movie and the song is amazing love ittt!!!

This movie made me wanna be a ballerina ever since I was a little girl. I’m 20 and still never done it but I’d LOVE to do it for fun. I’m not very athletic and I definitely don’t have the body for it but it is SO beautiful and I feel like I’d cry dancing properly like a ballerina idk
I feel you 😔
She is the luckiest ballerina in the world! Being able to portray barbies dancing in her films is a dream!!!
Despite the older movies not having the technology from today for some reason there's more detail in the older ones than the new ones which are filled with bright pinks and purples, only the older ones had some realism with fantasy if that makes sense
It’s because with the newer films they don’t add much detail into everything like Disney does with there CGI Animated films
And the stories are just stupid, Barbie was a woman to admire, now she's just a teenager living in glory, and spoiled
@@carolinamixi987 Barbie swan lake was so beautiful 😍
carolina alejandra the only point that I can give to the new movies and netflix series is that Barbie isn’t an actress and is actually struggling, and Barbie and Ken aren’t dating. And her parents are rich and not Barbie being a replica of the Kardashians/Jenners. Also more realistic bodies
Yes!! That's exactly what I think
I miss when barbie was all about magic and fantasy with ACTUAL romantic stories and SUCH GOOD MUSIC. Now it’s just girly power and the power of friendship with dialogue that seems like it was levelled down a bit too much. Like when I was watching some of the older movies their words were so much more elegant but now it’s too bubbly. :(
The originals are farrrr superior!!!
It's a shame i think that new Barbie movie treat kids like idiots
I agree with the bubbly part. I mean, girl power and friendship stuff is good to encourage tbh but to me, the colors are too vibrant and ya the dialogue is leveled down. I think it's bc Barbie is seen as a delicate girl or something, or focused on the scolding of being a Barbie doll, idk. I like the original movies. I'd like for them to bring back that elegances while showing how string she really is.
Yesss
I agree I do really miss the old Barbie movies like I'm born in 2004 and most Barbie movies I know we're older than me or just around when I was still a little kid but when I got to watch those I really love it but the Barbie movies today they are good but not as much as how I liked the older ones and uhm I don't really like how Barbie looks like nowadays in the movies

I'm gonna cry ugly tears when Maria retires, she's such a gorgeous dancer and great role model.
Honestly me too!
Sadly, she has probably already retired. Balarinas practice all their lives and bend their feet in unnatural ways to fit shoes that they will only wear for a fraction of their lives. Most balarinas dont get cast after they have reached their late 30's and early 40's unless they look and have not aged much, they instead retire from the stage and often turn to teaching
Actually she has not retired yet! She’s still in the NYC ballet company and is currently the oldest working female dancer there now till this day! She’s my idol!

Yes, this is one of the process for 3D animation, it's called Motion Capture
Wait so you’re telling me all the Barbie movies had actual actors and were not just pure animation????? So my whole childhood had just been a lie??? What about the little girls and boys then?
I think they were grownups but just animated like little kids
It's called Motion Capture. If you see 0.25, and the white balls on their body. It's one of the 3D process. Transferring human movement into the 3D model
Almost all 3D animation do this if the the movement acquired is hard to animate. We wanted the movement to be as real as possible. As for 2D animation, they use rotoscoping, a technique where they film the actor's movement and trace it back later 😊
Megitchel Lissa hmm🤔
Eh isnt its makes it more great? in the past i always thought, they just a drawing, a computer generated being, souless etc, but now knowing the dances moves was from a real dancers makes its more amazing for me.
I first watched the movie 10 years ago. I remember trying to make a book cover titled "The 12 dancing princesses" and pretended that it would open a magical world. I have loved ballet since then and now I have the chance to dance every day. Dreams do come true. This is my all-time favorite Barbie movie! I love my childhood.
Can you image how amazing barbie would be with updated technology if they kept making movies like this? I never noticed how much attention put behind the movies and how many talented people work on it. It's also makes me kinda sad that they don't make movies like this anymore and barbie is just a... actor, influencer, vlogger...tiktoker now :(
I like the older barbie movies way better then the ones now
Same! Nutcracker is the best with a close second being Swan lake. But that unicorn is too annoying hahahah
As a dancer, I remember watching these and wondering why it seemed Barbie was so accurate to actual dancing, especially when compared to other animated or even live action movies. I never thought that back then they would’ve actually made them in this way and put in this much effort to get accurate dancing
I loved this kind of Barbie, where imagination would flow through every music and whenever I would hear it again I would get nostalgic chills but I wondered what happened and what gave them the idea to change it...
Even just watching how they did the dancing scenes feels magical. I can feel the passion that was put into making this.
Everyone hating on Barbie but they forget THIS barbie and how iconic and badass she is!!!
I like the fact that in the new barbie films show more races and Barbie isn’t perfect but I still wish they made movies where barbie is an actress or maybee they could make them dreams instead? Or like in the diamond castle where they were telling a story. The old Barbie movies just made me so happy it just has that certain vibe. I hope they make more of theese fantasy oldy kind of Barbie movies along with the new ones
There are ones where she is an actress...Fashion Fairy Tale is one where she is an actress because she's in a trailer after a shoot and you can even see a poster for Mermaid Tail. Another one is Fairy Secret.

It always cheered me up!! I LOVED the movies as a child. I dont hate the newer movies but I prefer the older ones, theres something about it that is just so magical!!
I need to share something, forgive me.
I started ballet last year. My dream has always been to dance, not as a professional, just as the sensitive person I am. Things always seemed difficult and I couldn't start at a young age. Although, I tried my best to keep myself in shape even if I thought I'd never accomplish it (so many times). But you never know who would you meet, the right person that persuades you to try harder than ever and make it real. None of my friends knew I wanted to do ballet, neither my parents for years. Just my boyfriend, who bought my first pair of flat shoes five years ago (and those that I keep). I started doing ballet last year and I never thought I had to work so hard. But when the music turns on and the lights turn off, I can feel every single note in my heart. Sometimes I just want to cry when I realize that I'm doing exactly what I always wanted to.
.I hope you all find what you deserve, what really makes you happy.
That was absolutely beautiful! I’m a ballet dancer myself so this definitely hits home! I really resonate with the feeling of being swept up but the music and the emotion. It’s a beautiful thing. I’m very happy you found something your passionate about!
My Doll Cabinet When I was little, I started taking ballet classes too, but then I was bumping into other dancers, which I didn’t mean to. Then, the teacher fired me and I never took dance lessons again ever since! About 20 - 21 years later, I kept on practicing my ballet moves, by watching and hearing the music from the Barbie ballet movies. My balance isn’t always right, but I’m trying! And my ballet moves are getting more and more graceful! Hopefully, I’ll be a prima ballerina! Someday!
12 Dancing Princesses is my favorite Barbie movie to this day! I’m 15 now and I’m working hard towards my dream of being a professional ballet dancer!
it’s the year 2022 and this still makes me cry so hard.
