  • In this video we take a look at the AmpliFi HD Alien Mesh Network. This is a cylindrical built, triband, Wifi 6 mesh router with the knowledge and experience of Ubiquiti backing it.
This includes incoming wired speeds up to 1Gbps. This router comes with free built-in VPN called AmpliFi Teleport which allows access to your home network from anywhere in the world. And, unlike a lot of VPN services, it's completely free. It has a futuristic customizable LED touchscreen and lots of customization that can be done with the simple to use phone app.

Sounds like it would be a good option as a wifi access point(s) when paired with a pfsense or opnsense router.

I’ve upgraded from a Orbi RBK50 to Amplifi HD, and now I’m using two Amplifi Alien Routers (two can be connected via mesh point backbone mode) as a mesh network and it’s been sold for the last three years.

I've used their HD version routers for a while now but just ordered their Alien as I now have WIFI 6 wireless Internet and wanted to take advantage of it. I love the screen on their routers and I never had a lick of trouble with their HD which is why I decided to order two of their routers so I could use one as a Mesh with the 4 ethernet ports. Just a fantastic products

Hello! Great video, enjoyed watching. Wondering if you have additional info or recommendations. We have very clever child who is very techy and has found hacks around parental controls often. We currently have a router which offers a whitelist option through access control. This seems to be a hard to find option on routers and mesh systems, but prevents kids from bypassing parental controls because new devices use a random Mac address (iPhones) which often bypasses identifying specific devices for parental controls and downtime. Does this device have this option or which devices would you recommend for this type of option? Looking for a mesh system in particular.
I believe that other parental controls may try to identify devices by their device name in the device, but again with clever techs children this can also be changed and I’ve seen standard Xfinity or AT&T routers get bypassed on their parental control options with this type of hack.
Any additional thoughts would be greatly appreciated! Trying to prevent inappropriate usage and responsible usage in this new world :-)

I've had massive issues trying to use more than 1 SSID. Their IOT band literally never works. The settings are real touchy. Tweak the wrong thing and your internet might just go to crap and good luck figuring it out and getting it back. This is great router in theory, but I've had way too many issues in the last 2 years to recommend it.

The support from Amplifi sucks! I had a two unit system and just turned it off and gave it away. My BIL did the same

They need to release a Wifi6E version. This wifi 6 is already outdated.

Don’t get the mesh package. Get 2 routers set up as mesh. Able to hook up Xbox series X and PS5 to second unit (Mesh Point) with Ethernet and get same speeds that are going to the Main Router without being wired to Main Router. You can also sell two routers if you choose instead of one mesh system.

You will get the extra ports if you choose the same device as as base for the mesh.

Can’t decide between Alien or something Wi-Fi 6E, such as Eero Pro 6E.
Also what’s better, two Alien’s or Alien plus Alien extender? I’d be using a wired backhaul to connect both.

I just got one & love it. Wifi speeds are double what they were with my old TP-Link AX50. I'm glad you mentioned the speed shown on the LCD that you get from Comcast because I'm in the same boat. I have 1.2 gig service from Comcast and was hoping that the Alien would show that I'm getting 1 gig from them but no joy. The fastest it's shown since I got it (for Xmas) is 804 mbps down. But usually it shows in the 700's. What's interesting and also bugs me is that when the Comcast technician was here he showed me on his meter that I was getting 1299 mbps coming into my house and then also showed me I was getting 1299 mbps coming out of my modem. So both the old AX50 & Alien do not show that. With the AX50 I would plug into a LAN port and get around 400-700 down. With the Alien it's the oppsoite; it shows 700-804 down (via the built in speed test) but when I plug into one of the LAN ports I get around 400-500 mbps down which makes no sense to me.
I use the Alien strictly for wifi (I just used the LAN to see if it would show a gigabit of download speed). What web UI settings should I be using for optimum speed for both wifi & LAN? Right now I just use a single SSID w/ band steering on (I do not have a Alien mesh point). Thanks for the great video, cheers!

I use bitwarden and by far they are the best password manager out there. I need to upgrade to a wi-fi mesh system. I love the Netgear Orbi, but they are expensive, particularly the "Pro" version which is what I would want. I see a couple limitations when it comes to VLAN with this Ubiquiti Alien, but will do some more research on it.

I don't run the mesh kit but two routers with a CAT6 backbone and all can say its rock solid, as you have said in your video, Its probably only one of setups that I have never had to reset. I just set up a two router setup via a wifi link until I run the CAT6 backbone at my parents place and it still surprises me how good this router is.

They’re $100 off during Black Friday, which makes them similar priced to other top end routers, such as Asus.
However, using one a bit, I’d say if you have a need for more reliable high speed internet, they’re worth buying even at the higher price. But if you can’t afford it, then an Asus with Merlin is also super. Just not as “out of your hair” as this thing is. The way the Alien is so automatic is very impressive.

Not too expensive at all. I am paying mine using a serial card payment and doing so is worth it so long as you can trust the service. Some devices cannot currently be sold cheap and this important router is one of them.
