  • sorry for poor editing I'm still fairly new to filming and Ill be doing a lot more DIY video style in the future.
Hello this is a compilation of photos and videos of my merkur xr4ti restoration/build. Ive always wanted a ford sierra cosworth rs 500 but since I couldn't afford one i built the next best thing. this car is still not done but at least now it drives and its a torque monster. The parts list is extensive. Part 2 will be the interior and small bits and pieces that i have yet to do. I hope you enjoy

I bought one new in 1987 when I was stationed in the army in Germany. I had a mechanic over there who was very familiar with these cars which were a hit over there. I paid $22,500 for it. Anyways I didn't have the car 3 days and it went into his shop with 147 miles on it. I had the small turbo removed with its max output of only 7 to 10 psi at 145 wasn't enough for me. I had researched the car over there seeing others modified yo a bigger turbo that pumped out 12 to 18 psi and had added a intercooler also now the motor rated at 184 in there simple dyno. He also had put in a 14v super high heat Bosch high energy voil system. Also added was a Spec stage 2 clutch system. The exhaust was totally removed and I had a 3 duals with the cat removed after $3200 it was done. It was a very fun car to drive specially on the autobon. I manages to get the car to 161 mph being the Speedo didn't go that far I had a chase gt40 Ferrari that the mechanic friends had to use running along side. Fun car for fun times. I ended up selling it once back in the state's to a guy from Utah who like the mods in 1997. He took a greyhound bus from Utah to pontiac michigan with $9700 in hand all that way. He ended up driving back to Utah with no problems. Stayed in touch for about 2 years than it was history. Nice to see someone else getting one of these going. They are a super sweet ride to high performance for sure.

I have always loved these cars - Even had one when I was too young, broke, and dumb to understand what I was getting into with XR ownership. Getting another one and doing a full build on it has always been on my bucket list. It's super cool to see the XR4Ti still getting some love these days. I hope your car turned out well

I am assuming this is not going to be a street car since you did not install a muffler. I am in the middle of a build on my 88's original head, had it ported and polished and it's being resurfaced right now. I bought the original 'Stinger' header years ago and it seems like once you start variance on original locations, the price of the project skyrockets. I opted for all Turbonetic's goodies; $$$$. I caught a break at the scrap yard and found a bunch of 3'' stainless pipe including 90's. I fabricated a rotated intake and I have enough to make a nice exhaust with a Borla oval. I started out with a 72k mile Cali car, super clean I got at a fire sale price of $800. I am currently in the 12's and it looks like it is going to top out around 14k. Perhaps I should do a vid like this. I have full Cossie body work, Euro lights, Sparco seats and harness, Momo wheel, shifter, and pedals, Phantom gauges, Sony stereo, T5 with short shifter, Stage II Centerforce clutch, and an endless list of smaller things. Still lacking, wheels, tires, PBR's front, '12 Focus Rear disc, aluminum drive shaft, Autometer wideband, Stinger fuel rail, and Walbro fuel pump. Minimum $1500. Some of you just getting started take note, you can sink a lot in a Merk. If you want to keep cost down, get a 'stock location' header. This will allow you to keep driving the car, and you want have 2g's in just the turbo aspect, ie FMIC, Blow off valve, External wastegate, etc. Going in, I thought I would maybe spend 4 to 5k, and here I am almost 13k later and still not done. I am expecting to make about 345hp, but in retrospect, it would have been hella cheaper to drop in an 5.0 w/t5 out of wrecked Mustang. No boost, but wtf it's much cheaper to make power. Good luck to all of you.

Why would they keep the alternator up there in the way of running that line straight? Simply create a bracket for it on the passenger side bottom, where it should go.

Just got one of these amazing cars with 57k original miles from the 1st owner...
The down side is the car sat on a driveway for 25yr... So basically everything need to be redone.....
I do have all the documents from the dealer /85/ also factory keys and service manual ,whatever came with the car back then.....amazing ..
I dont know what to do with the car... in the meaning of fully restore it to the original state or do some taste full mods under the hood only..
What you guys think about that? Is this car gonna wort big dollar in the future or naaah..... ?! My dream car was the Cossy when I grew up in Europe .... :)

Why didn't you go with a newer tech turbo? Not being critical just asking. I know that thing hits very hard I had one and would tense every time I heard the spoolup and waited for it to hit.

well it was meant to be a budget build so a used diesel. turbo fit the bill.. it actually spools up surprisingly quick. I have full boost around 3500-4000 rpm

What's the difference between the Ford Sierra Cosworth and the Merkur XR4Ti?

    • @mavicair5626

XR4Ti is based on the Sierra XR4i which was the top spec non-Cosworth model of the Sierra mk1. So it's closer to that than to the Cosworth.

Rantanen well it’s been 3 years and its proven that external holds boost much better than an internal gate ever would. This is an old hx35 turbo, they are found in many old diesel trucks so parts are cheap and abundant..

Why put the Pinto 4 cylinder back in,I’d put a modern high performance V6 or V8 in. A friend put a Chevy LS crate motor in an FRS and it fit and was bad ass.
