I saw this drop a week ago and was simultaneously elated-excited and superstitious-terrified.
I read the title. I saw your picture on the thumbnail. It’s Corey. He by definition must have, once again, remastered a piece that could never be replicated. Otherwise, it wouldn’t be there. In a synchronic flash, I apprehended those lyrics. That isn’t possible. Anyone attempting this song doesn’t get it. This isn’t a good song. It’s iconic. There was nothing like it…there still isn’t.
So I said…I think I’ll sit on this one. I want to really be awake and aware that first time. I just…this…pick the right time.
That performance presented a special definition of purposeful excellence. It was a profound selection. The musicianship was breathtaking. The way you controlled your voice intensity and steady breath release through the lyrics was a really insightful choice. It is a fantastic way of representing the emotional depth and ambivalence. It’s a completely different voice and exactly in character. It wasn’t impressive…it was inspired. That was a genius artist move.
The guitar…I mean…yeah. But, you consistently do things with your voice like that. Never the same. Your subtle choices in each piece create this…it’s like an independent stage actor themed unexpectedly and self-evidently exactly on point. You always do this thing where as I’m listening you’re amplifying the challenge and exceeding it at the same time. I appreciate the original piece even more than I did given how respectful and insightful your reinterpretation was. I really love that piece. I respected that piece so much I superstitiously put off watching this for over a week. But, again, it seems more now…is that possible. But, as always, the moment the song stops I immediately think…
How does he do that? I like that version better. Way better. It’s this sense of absolute verisimilitude. That is the way this piece ought to be performed. It’s more real than the real thing.
Consistently the same. You pick a challenge. You illustrate it respectfully and lift it up higher. You exceed the challenge.
Fantastic. Like…I remember being there now. I remember hearing this song for the first time decades ago.
