    As near as I figure the Nikon is first focal plane and the Zeiss is a second focal plane. I love Zeiss and own a pair of binos that are absolutely fantastic but the FFP vs the SFP is a game changer for me.

    Both your vids on this scope are very useful and informative. What kind of mount do you use and is it a low, medium, or high mount? Thank you!

    • @RyanFurman24
      @RyanFurman24 Рік тому

      I use as low as possible. The scope and rifle will dictate how low you can go. I use pic rails on all rifles that don't have integral rails these days and typically use a 1.0 ring.

    I use this exact scope on my .338LM and its AWESOME!! I replaced a broken (still waiting on replacement) Vortex PST 2 (also a very good scope} but for the money, it can’t be beat.

    I plan to get the Nikon because its a great scope for the
    price I don't have thousands to spend on a scope that only gets used on hunting
    trips. Yea its not a Swarovski or a Zeiss, I am not going to pay for a name
    period I pay for functionality. And the Nikon fits the bill. The hell with the
    detents not being as pronounced as the scopes you prefer you were nit-picking.

    I had the 4-16x MRAD version and noticed ghost clicks in the elevation turret. The best way to describe it is for every other .1 click in elevation, it would sometimes feel like 2 clicks. Rotating the turret slowly made it obvious. I read here that similar folks had the same issue.... forum.snipershide.com/threads/nikon-fx-1000.6871642/page-5. It sounded like Nikon might have fixed this recently based on the forum posts but who knows.

    I actually got a chance to compare the Nikon Black FX1000 & illuminated Zeiss V4 (6-24x50mm's) side-by-side at the League City, TX Cabelas. I thought Zeiss had slightly better lenses but not $400.00 better. Zeiss Lenses are hard to beat. I did prefer Nikon's turrets size & marking/numbering system over the Zeiss V4 turrets.
    Nikon is the better value for me but If that illuminated Zeiss V4 6-24x50 can be found for around the $850 - $900 price range (sales + coupon code) over the Next year - then Zeiss would be the clear winner. The non-illuminated Zeiss V4 6-24x50 is $865 at DVOR for a limited time only.

      Illumination on a rifle scope is about useless as night sights on a pistol!! Unfortunately most shooters don't learn this for quiet awhile.

    Have you ever used Midas tac athlon heard some people like it better than ares. I called and it’s same glass as ares but different turrets and not quite as good of zoom range. Supposed to be much improved turrets. I’m trying to decide what to go with and Midas tax and Nikon are my top I can get Midas for about 150 cheaper. Also the dark horse for me is the cabelas covenant 7. Liked your review thank you. Honest said it was good and useable but you think the Zies is worth the extra.

    How would you compare the reticle and glass clarity of the Nikon fx1000 to the athlon ares btr?

    • @HuntinTheWest
      @HuntinTheWest  5 років тому

      I prefer the reticle on the Ares. It just looks cleaner to me. The actual thickness of the hash marks and reticle are the same but I like the center of the Ares more. I also prefer the fact that the hash marks do not go on both sides of the reticle. The glass was slightly better in the Ares.

    I was informed by a Nikon support person that Nikon has completely shut down their rifle scope production. They will continue to make binoculars, rangefinders, and spotting Scopes. No more rifle scopes. When the Nikon scopes on the market are gone....there will be no more.

    While the glass is nice for it's price range, the turrets don't track worth a darn. It won't even zero let alone dial for a long range shot. So, before you can even get it mounted, you already have to send it in for Turret repair. Look at the Athlon Line or Vortex line... You'll be better served.

    • @srs4767
      @srs4767 5 років тому

      WOW!!!! The only thing the Nikon is good for is a paper weight IMO. I've had basic hunting scopes function better. They claim "Competition ready out of the box" Mine went from the box, to the rifle, back to the box, and shipped out for repair. Will see if they fixed the problem in 4-8 WEEKS... :-(

    • @HuntinTheWest
      @HuntinTheWest  5 років тому

      SageRat Shooter it’s a good thing we have choices. It took me 4 Gen II PSTs to get a good one. My hunts are too important for that kind of reliability. Both the Athlon and the Nikon performed flawlessly in my testing but I like the turrets better in the Nikon.
