Tra la la la la la la,
Der die Schlacht gewann,
Lerman vor Pavia.
Kaiser Franz von Frankenland,
Tra la la la la la la,
Fiel in des Frundsbergs Hand,
Lerman vor Pavia.
Alle Blümlein standen rot,
Tra la la la la la la,
Heißa, wie schneit der Tod,
Lerman vor Pavia.
Als die Nacht am Himmel stund,
Tra la la la la la la,

Und der euch dies Liedlein sang,
Tra la la la la la la,

As a frenchman, the battle of Pavia is one of the saddest moment that I can think of for the heritage of my country ; It is the final, ultimate charge of the French knights. Everyone keeps circlejerking about Crecy or Agincourt, when they forget that after these massacres, the french knights won against the proud taciturn English army and humbled it hard with their gallant, steely charges at Baugé, Patay or Formigny. For almost half-a-millenia, the french knights, gallant, honourful, beautiful, gave great fear to every European nation, fighting from Hastings to Ravenna with glorious charges. Even the indomitable Swiss were defeated at Marignano, even the invincible Turks were stopped when the knights of Frankia united under a common banner.
But then came Pavia. And all these haughty, respected heroes fell to the ground, not only under arquebus fire, but also against the resolute, steely will of the Spaniard and German common footman. Not only was it a complete failure and humiliation for France, that lost for quite a long time its first place among Europe, it was also in this battle that the last knight errant of England (Richard de la Pole) found his demise, just like the great warriors of the Scots Guard that so represented Scotland's military prowess. I can't imagine what were feeling the survivors of the gendarmes' charge as they stood before a King and all the nobility of France dead or dying at their feet. After that, the nobility of France became corrupt and degenerate until 1789 came...
Europe truly is an incredible novel.
That was the real game of thrones. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. But conflicts can also bring a lot of progress. The constant competition between the European kingdoms made them the best in the world after some time.
What a beautiful and thoughtful comment, Monsieur.
*1871
The french knight are definitely not "the knights of Frankia "
Spaniards, to what I know, didn’t consider themselves commoners. They were poor, yet noble, even footmen. Arturo Perez-Reverte brilliantly described their society in his book about Alatriste.

Battle of Pavia (1525), Spain annihilates France in the framework of the Italian wars (1494-1559) ... hence they speak of Pavia, since in this battle there were German mercenaries on the Spanish side.
They were Swiss
@@mareksicinski3726 Spain had landsknechts which is the winning side that's singing.
The swiss mercenaries had been working and were strictly loyal only to the French for a long time by then, got completely mauled by landsknecht at pavia and after this battle landsknecht became the favoured mercenaries to hire.
@@alexmag342 Some necroposting for the History's sake :) Actually both sides had landsknecht forces at Pavia. Habsburgs had proper Imperial ones, and Francis I had a renegade Black Band force. The French also had a Swiss force, and one of the roots of their defeat was in that. Landsknechts and the Swiss hated each other so strongly, that they were positioned as far from each other as possible, and were destroyed by von Frundsberg piecemeal.

"Lermann" is here translated with "To arms at Pavia". But lermann means lehr-Mann- Lehrer-teacher. Frundsberg reorganized and trained german Landsknechts. They defeted in the italian war not only the french cavalry but also the famous swiss merchandaries...." Heissa wie schneit der Tod " would be correctly translated then with: Heissa the death is snowing which means that the death is coming over the enemy like snow in the winter...
Yeah we also discussed those 2 parts a lot, it seems like no one knows for sure.
Isn’t it an old version of “Alarm” or “Lärm”? That’s make some sense no?
I believe that it actually means "wie schneid' der Tod" (how death mows, i.e. with a scythe, since death is often referred to as "der grimme Schnitter" (the Grim Reaper), which also matches the flowers mentioned before). Probably "schneit" (snows) is just a spelling mistake that has been copy-pasted all over the internet.
As for "lerman", this is probably southern German dialect for "let's roister / make noise" (lasst uns lärmen), otherwise they'd simply have written "Lehrmann".
Respekt aus Amerika.
Habsburg Spain... best Spain
So einen Frundsberg bräuchten wir wieder ! ... ^^ 🤔

Hmmm, while I DO like the song a lot and your videos in general... I think you did a disservice in regards to the subtitles for the lyrics. Though I mostly get were you were coming from.
For one I think it's 'Lehrmann vor Pavia' Lehrmann as in 'Lehrer' so 'teacher', as he taught the french and italians a lesson they wouldnt forget so soon. the 'vor Pavia' is simply in relation to the location of the battle...
I also think it's 'Heißa, wie schneidt der Tod' as in 'Schnitter Tod' so the reaper, cutting deeply into the ranks and getting a grim harvest.
Everything else is mostly on point I'd say. Once more, thank you Dr. Ludwig :D
I agree about the "wie schneid' der Tod" (death is definitely not snowing 😏), but I am convinced that "lerman" means "let's roister / make noise" in some southern German dialects.
