I cannot believe you referred to Rebecca Bunch as a 'non-lawyer' she did not go to Harvard Law and then have a breakdown and move to West Covina for this slander
Hannah Millward SORRY I WAS USING HER EXPRESSION AS AN EXAMPLE. YOU ARE TOTALLY CORRECT
It is also important to point out that Jim goes back to being a lawyer at the end of the episode. And Paula is a great example of "DO be a lawyer," too. So BLAM.

The reason he says "you'll never be on the Supreme Court" is because there are only 9 members and they have lifetime appointments, so one of them pretty much has to die for there to be an opening
Not necessarily. There are other legal possibility, inter alia increasing the number of Supreme Court Justices.
I really thought it was because of political favors and discrimination. But the number of candidates and the time in the position makes sense.
@@arviduebelacker You would have to change the constitution so....good luck?
@@soapygirl83 Constitution does not specify the number of justices on the SC. 9 has become a "norm" but there have been different numbers of justices at some points in US history. I'm pretty sure FDR increased the number of SC justices in order to get the New Deal through challenges.
@@frutrace No FDR was never able to pack the court with more judges. Doing so would have given him so much power that there was immense political opposition to it. Increasing the number of SC justices is pretty much impossible.
honestly crazy ex girlfriend is such an underrated show
It's a masterpiece, ain't it?!
Yes YEs it's so good
I like the storyline but the constant song breakouts were too much for me lmao

"Legally Blonde didn't show any of the hard work."
Excuse me, Elle put in two entire montages :P.
The joke about Glendale U is that it's actually a really terrible law school and does not provide graduates with the qualifications to become acredited lawyers, however the bar exam in California (and New York) are the most difficult exams in the US
Tks, I didn't get that joke as a non-American
Just a fun FYI: In North America a lot of people go back to school to do a professional degree (Medical School, Law school etc.) so it is not uncommon to see people 40+ taking the bar!
megm22 Agreed! It’s the same in the Philippines. I’ve heard of people in their 50s and 60s taking the Bar. There was one in his eighties, too.
Bar Exams in the Philippines take four whole Sundays-a four hour exam in the morning and another in the afternoon. The results don’t come until six months later, and the results vary every year. For the 2018 exam, only 22% passed.
As in every country.
Layla-Tal Medina even few this year lmao but I’m very happy to say I passed but yes it’s quite hard to pass the board exam especially the wait
In Brazil, the bar exam take two days: The First exam is multiple choice. The Second day you have to solve a case and write a petition.
Also each state has it’s own Bar so if you want to expand your practice across state lines or move cross country to chase that one boy you dated back in summer camp you’ll have tp pass the bar in your new state.
When you sang “because the job sector is saturateeeed” you got me. Paused the video, liked it, continued
Saaaameee 😂 😂 😂
Eve: successful queen
Also Eve: has the most relatable summer
i was bingeing this show too (thank u netflix) and very poetically saw this episode on the day i had to submit my application for admission to the law schools in my state
and i kid u not, had a very difficult time watching this number and thinking "IS THIS A SIGN FROM THE UNIVERSE OR JUST BAD TIMING"
ouch, that's really unfortunate. haha
Tbh, you might want to look into statistics about the way the law field has changed. I saw some reddit post recently where lawyers/former law students talked about the fees of law school, the wage curve, saturation in the market, and other factors of the field that might make law a less attractive field than it used to be...unless its truely your passion and dream. I dont want to discourage you (and it's not like I'm educated on the topic), but there are a lot of things ppl don't bother to tell you before you enter a field of study & accure a bunch of debt. I found out some things about my own field the hard way after I graduated.
Tldr; talk to as many lawyers as you can and ask for statistics. Be fearless and ask for the unfiltered truths about the field, good and bad. It's better that you make a fully educated decision, entering with eyes wide open and determination than graduate with heaps of debt and a sinking realization that this isnt what you thought it would be.
Good luck! 😁
Don't do it you will regret it don't be a lawyer
But on a serious note follow your heart and do what you love you only Live once

@@diamelapumarinojackson7634 Are you American or British?
i wonder how much of this is the cultural differences between america and the uk! just as a heads up, i think it's still a pretty common presumption in the states at least that lawyer is like doctor which is Theoretically Easy Money. also, the character who was 'pre-law' hasn't left undergrad yet! pre-law is an undergraduate degree that's meant to prep you for law school. so when he said change majors it's more possible for that person because it's just undergrad and ur major choice isn't locked in the minute you enter uni like it is in the uk. this was really fun to watch, i really enjoyed listening to your opinions on this!

being so heinous has a really bad affect on the skin...
The bar exam scene is actually quite realistic (in terms of casting, haha) to what it would look like in the US. Since law school is a graduate school that requires no specific prerequisites beyond a bachelors degree, many people do it as a mid-career switch. Even if you graduated college at 22 and went to law school immediately, you’d then be 25/26 by the time you took the bar. Personally, my plan is to take 2 gaps years so I’ll be 27/28 by the time I sit the bar :)
I'm 39 and sitting for the bar this year!
Also because if you move to a different state you weren't initially qualified for you have to sit that state's bar exam in order to practice law there and moving between states in the US is incredibly common
It's ok. Being 26 as opposed to 28 is no big deal. Enjoy your life because once you start working, it's close to impossible to take time off or take a long vacation. The law is a jealous mistress!
asianamericanfocus I’m taking all the time I need!! To be honest my studying habits in undergrad were poor, so I really need to work a few years and develop some healthier time management skills before I invest in a law degree. As for the law being a “jealous mistress”, your comment cracked me up! My God father (a lawyer) is always saying he failed me as a God father because I am planning on law school 😂
ChristophProbst I hope it went/goes well!! That’s amazing!
Can’t help but notice the Harvard hat lol

That last bit was a specific reference to higher su*c*de rates that lawyers have in the US. I think it's like the 4th highest rates of any profession according to the APA
Jeff Sessions is kind of a bad guy. It’s about his morals, not his appearance.
As both a huge fan of Shakespeare and the child of a lawyer,
I always found it ironic that "Kill all the lawyers" is one of his most quoted lines, and usually for a laugh.
Cause anyone who actually knows the story of Henry VI pt. 2 can tell you, the character who says that is Dick the Butcher, a murderer
trying to sew anarchy so his group can seize power in the chaos.
And those pesky judges, lawyers and due process would get in the way.
Lawyers existed in Shakespeare era?
fatih nararya They did. Shakespeare even wrote about court proceedings in Merchant of Venice.
Excellent point, although I am certain that Shakespeare also intended it to be funny, not as recognition that it will be the lawyers who somehow save us from anarchy.
fatih nararya there’s been lawyers since the birth of laws and democracy in Ancient Rome and Greece times.
I don't know e tu brute. Is my fave go to quote.
Ex Everyone got a beagle but you, walk up to a friend eating one "e tu."
After being a paralegal for 14 years, I can honestly say that almost every lawyer I have talked to has recommended against being a lawyer. It can be a soul destroying job. It's the only thing I know how to do now though, so even though my sister (a lawyer) suggested I don't become a lawyer - I am actually taking the bar exam in July. But my advice to people is to not go to study law until they have worked in the real world and know how crushing the law can be. Everyone gets mad at lawyers. The judges yell at lawyers, the clients yell at lawyers, lawyers yell at lawyers. At any given moment, someone is probably upset with you.
Dude my whole family keeps telling me to go to law school and I’m taking paralegal classes and telling them I want to try being a paralegal for a few years and then see if I want to be a lawyer. I think they want me going right away for the “prestige” even though I don’t have the money for it. I’m very excited to be a paralegal!
Who's here because of LegalEagle?
I actually found this and next is to watch LegalEagle.
I AM!
Me
Me too. They did a collab recently.
Only thing this video taught me was that the UK and the US have completely DIFFERENT systems when it comes to law. Her in the US, law school is a graduate program, you take the LSAT to get in, and the BAR to be legally able to practice law towards your final years. Not weird to see older people taking it.
Considering Australia essentially has the same system as the UK (legally and university wise) even we have many mature age students. It's not unusual at all to see people over 40 studying law.
I would love to do law but don’t want to end up working for large pharmaceuticals/banks/environmentally damaging companies that I would have issues with morally and it seems like working for human rights/ngos is unrealistic for most
honestly you're more likely to end up doing work for medium-sized businesses who want to do pretty mundane stuff, the idea of working for huge corporations at a massive firm is "big law" that only a few of the top students get to do, so if you don't want to do it you don't have to. you could do wills and trusts for normal people, that is probably highly rewarding because it gives families peace of mind when it's all said and done
that's a nice and important thought
you could always work for the government
Diamond in my country working for the government has some good opportunities you otherwise wouldn’t have
@@brendonsforehead4961 it is also the same in America. you could work for almost any mid-sized to major cities district attorneys office, or you could become a public defender. or if you don't want to do trial law you could work for an attorney generals office in any state or on the federal level. there are a decent amount of positions available but it can be very competitive similar to the medical field.
Your chaotic energy is so relatable. Like stressed af and on the verge of a breakdown but uses humour instead 😂
Eve: 'Who is Ally McBeal?'

7:33 A law degree in the UK is only 3 years? In the States it's 4 years undergrad + 3 years JD
its 4 years too, and then you need to get a diploma in professional legal practice after which is 2 years (atleast at the University of Edinburgh)
Yh all together in the UK it’s 6 years 3 years degree 1 year LPC 2 years training contract.
Listen we have to fucking bar exams in germany. I started 2011 and im still not done.

In the US law is considered a pretty safe course compared to something like teaching
Alexander Wood um... no? Lol in the US teaching is considered like one of the easiest, safest, most guaranteed jobs to go for. what type of safe did u mean?
Heather Belling I’m a teacher...it is literally one of the hardest jobs to get employed in (especially NY where I am). Because it used to be a high demand job then too many people went out for teaching, but now it is on a decline but it is still really hard. Idk if you’re also a teacher (probably not judging by the aggressiveness of your comment) but most teachers probably agree....
Heather I’m in California. Not sure about before 1985 but since then teachers who aren’t tenured get pink slipped almost yearly; $50-75k years for school, 5+ years, 4+ state tests, etc and you only have a credential for your specific state.
@@HeatherBelling a lot of people look down on teaching because of how little it pays for what teachers have to put up with.
@@HeatherBelling As a mom who's worked at a school for over 10 years that's absolutely not true
If you say that lawyers do not give free advice, what is then 'pro bono' work?
Pro bono cases are much rarer than paid cases hahah
Also, pro bono work is not required of lawyers in a lot of states.

A lot of people in the US take the bar later in life. To be an attorney in California, you generally have a bachelors degree and then attend law school after that since it’s a graduate degree. Also, school in the US is prohibitively expensive so it takes some people a long time to finish schooling. The bar exam in California is notoriously difficult, and practicing attorneys need to take tests throughout their career in order to continue being bar certified. I have a lot of attorneys in my family, and I was considering law at one point. I just feel your comment on the age of the people taking the exam in the show was insensitive, since that is the reality in the US.
I’d love to hear if you’re still in love with the profession 30 years in. Also, people really do hate attorneys. 🤷♀️
You should react to Crazy Ex-GF's overall portrayal of law.

I feel like I'm gonna regret this... but who is Jeff Sessions?
who is jeff
8:48 Um, yeah, I don't think that bit was about his looks.
I can relate to this song so much. The references are more about 90's pop culture. My feelings about law have been different between when I started Law school, when I ended it, when I started working and when I melted down. Now I gave up law and office work altogether and now life's all pepsy and colorful again. Don't be a lawyer for the wrong reasons, Do be a lawyer if it's right for you.
What's scary is when you see an American Lawyer watch this and they're like "yeah that's right, yeah that's right" oooph we really do torture them here.
He’s not saying Jeff Sessions is unattractive, he’s saying you don’t want to be Jeff Sessions because he sold his soul to Donald Trump
SPOILER ALERT he ended up going back to his lawyer job so don’t worry
To add some context to this song it is from the perspective of one character and another actually decides to go to law school and do pro bono work. It’s meant to be a funny song not actually dissuade people from being lawyers
another night I wake up in the middle of the night in America to see you just posted in England. wild how that works
The “nuclear option” is just a procedural rule in the senate. It doesn’t affect needing a majority of votes for confirmation, but it has to do with the ability of the minority party to prevent a tally of votes from even happening. The nuclear option makes it harder for the minority party to stop the vote, so actually without the nuclear option it would be harder to get onto the supreme court due to the partisan pressures to deny the other party from doing anything they want.
“It’s 2019, who has a soul?”

Hi Eve!
Loved the video! I was just wondering as a 16 year old who lacks a bit of confidence and really doesn't like public speaking, would law be still a suitable career option for me even if I am interested in most of the contents of the course? I would obviously be willing to improve my public speaking skills. :)
Hi Bop! I'm not Eve (obvs) but I still think that it's still a viable career choice. At least as far as I'm aware, in the UK you have a barrister and a solicitor. A barrister comes to trial, while solicitor doesn't. You could start looking into these distinctions. Let me know what you think!
Hey! I used to haaaaate public speaking. I did non-law undergrad (languages) and pushed myself to do loads of things like becoming a student ambassador etc (giving talks to large groups of people about the uni/course), and just finished the GDL (law conversion) where I did loads of pro bono volunteering giving talks (to schools, prisons etc which was def nerve-wracking but helped so much). You're only 16 so you have loads of time to improve on your public speaking. I'm now 24 and about to start LPC (what Eve just finished), and my public speaking skills are 10000x better than they were when I was 16. Just push yourself to do things that will help you improve! Obviously being a barrister will require more public speaking skills than solicitors (although you do need to give presentations to clients etc sometimes), so this is also something to take into account! :) Best of luck! Anything is possible!!! xxxxx
I’m starting law at uni in a month or so and I am quite confident but not in public speaking. I suppose if you know you can be easily comfortable with classmates even in your education now then you shouldn’t worry. If it’s is what you want to do, do it.
im studying law next year and think the same thing lol rip
Hey! I'm currently studying towards a law degree and I went into uni absolutely hate public speaking (honestly still don't love it), but it's really a skill that you learn over time, and you will gain confidence in. Being a lawyer also dosen't always mean that you have to represent clients in court - you could be a barrister or solicitor (assuming that you're in the English legal system). Law isn't for everyone, but even if you're unsure if you want to be a lawyer, a law degree opens lots of different doors for you
I am here because of Legal Eagle. I am happy I watched this.
As a practicing attorney, I very much agree with the lyrics in this song.
