are you sure you're getting out? We had an "antenna " up that we bought on line. Calling and calling, no answer. A freind who is a ham came over and "tuned" out antenna. Bam! Hams everywhere!
I have in the past called on 52.525, 146.520, and 446.000 and made contacts as I traveled. Always knowing that the local repeater was always there I needed. I have also called on the repeater outputs seeking simplex contacts and changing frequency in necessary to 146.52 or .54
I snowbird each year to the Senator Wash LTVA. Our 8 pm "desert Rat Pack" net is highly active, reaching Yuma 20+ miles away. Great hearing everyone's voices and when a weather event, fire or other odd occurrence takes place it's good to have several eyes on the event. I try and reach out whenever I can to see whose around. It's good to know there are friends close by.
I CQ at least a couple times a day on 146.520 here in Charlotte NC. I've only been licensed since February 4th but so far have gotten ONE big fat QSO on 2 meter simplex, and ONE on 70cm simplex. I'm out here calling but not getting any answers!! 😊 - KQ4GAG
2 meters is NOT dead around eastern Tennessee. The repeaters around here stay pretty busy except for the wee hours in the morning when I'm up. I stay up half of the night and sleep part of the day. That's what Vietnam will do fer ya. KO4IDL.
Hello, KO4IDL, from the Ft. Thomas area, in N. Kentucky. KI6CMR...new in the area...what's your recommendation for a repeater in my neck of the woods? TNX 73s
where we are its very busy in georgia. We would get complaints about sitting on 520 chatting. We use it for contact then once we make contact we get off to another frequency for simplex. That allows others to use it as the contact frequency.
Most of these areas are dead some places may not be so dead . all you here is nets once a week . just for numbers , it is hi and bye. After the net it stays quite. Everybody's afraid to talk or afraid to play with different radios or antennas or locations. In the last 10 to 15 years it has become a joke.
Do any of you more experienced guys have any advice for a guy living in a small town where there are no 2m repeaters or simplex? I have a vertical 20ft in the air (best I can do rn) and only in the early mornings during a 2 hr window I can usually barely pick up repeaters 60 miles away (from a town higher in elevation) but thats all.. I've scanned manually and only ever heard a very clear station 40 miles away on the linear translator part of the band plan. No idea what that even is. No one seems to be on 2 meter simplex around here.. 70cm is worse, might as well use it for private communication here lol. Do I just need to go higher or is my only option staying with 10 meters? Even with a crappy antenna height shouldn't I at least get some local stations if they existed? Lots of licensed people on the FCC search in this area, but I guess none of them active or at least not on 2m
I keep my radio on 146.520 in my truck when driving. I give a call every now and then but getting an answer is far and few between. Maybe your local hams operate at different times of the day. Some folks only have their radio on while driving to/from work. Try those hours.
Probably the same reason the FCC has made it difficult and more expensive to renew your license. Why let us have it for nothing then they can lease it and make money off other profitable services?
Unfortunately in my area it is. I call on and monitor .520 in my area since I became a tech several months ago and haven't made a contact yet.

Derrick, we need to get you into VHF/UHF contesting. You are a natural and you'd have fun doing it.

Nope. You just posted a 35 min video to show it isn't.
Great video...I'm KI6CMR, formerly from the East Bay...miss talking on the W6CX repeater. Now in N. Kentucky. 73's!

This video is about 2M SIMPLEX ‼️

There's a FM VHF/UHF contest called Winterheat in January. All simplex. Check it out.
And the legend of the saggy yaggy grows.. Another great video. Kk6tks David, lake county.
It never was alive..
But in my area we most often use point to point rather than repaters.

Looking for you where are you
Where's the bandwidth for it? Why was it all taken away?
