A Quranic Lesson in Religious Psychology - Khutbah by Nouman Ali Khan

  • Опубліковано 27 лип 2016
  • This Khutbah was given at the Colleyville Masjid Islamic Association of Mid Cities on June 24, 2016.
The Ayat of Surat Al-Baqarah related to Ramadan and fasting occur within a specific context. Nouman Ali Khan explains how the Quran, in its infinite wisdom, tackles the religious psychology of those who believe. It highlights diseases of the heart where some people are strict about observing rituals to the minutest detail, but are wholly corrupt when it comes to financial matters and other worldly dealings. It’s a kind of schizophrenia that we must seek to overcome in Ramadan because the tawqa (consciousness) of Allah must extend to all facets of one’s life. Ramadan must transform us not just spiritually, but ethically, otherwise what is the purpose of fasting from food when our hearts are afflicted with an insatiable hunger and greed for wealth?

I've always marveled at the accuracy and applicability of this Ayat. One of the least understood, least appreciated verses of the Quran. Every corrupt society on earth today, operates in the very manner the Ayat says not to act.

Alhumdulilah! I was in a Masjid in Houghton, Johannesburg one day and my little 2yr old girl saw her brother downstairs in the male section with her father so she got excited and started calling out to him. Boy were we embarrassed by the Imaam who have a long speech thereafter about how people come to the mosque for peace and if people are travelling and stop for salaah they should make a plan to care for their kids, etc, etc, etc!

Ustad you are an amazing speaker and I love listening to your videos. Can I just point out that, at 22 minutes of the video you say that there was no point in the ibadat that someone has done because their greed has not been removed, and they have not become better persons. This might have the effect on some people to discard their ibadat because they feel that there is some discrepancy in their behaviour towards other people. Perhaps they may feel they are not good or perfect enough to wear hijab or grow a beard or pray salah. I have many friends who discard salah, because they think they are not 'good' enough to offer salah. They say to themselves, they will pray, but only when they have stopped sinning. I've had friends say to me, if someone lies about their income to the tax man, then what good is their salah?
Perhaps I might suggest that those that observe their rituals will get the sawab of those rituals, while at the same time accumulating sins in place of the bad deeds they commit. Rather than telling them that their ibadat is of no use. I hope this comes across to you in a right and proper manner. I only say this because someone may hear your khutbah and say "I will no longer pray salah until all my muamalat are improved" . Jazak Allah. Atique.

    As Salam Aliekom
Mufti Ali Khan & the World Ummah including Humanity
Respectfully the Book of Life & the Laws we Live by are always being revealed & evolving.
Allah God the Creator Speaks to us every minute of the Day & Night maybe it is time we educate & encourage everyone to listen, consider, contemplate, consult, and share the Positive Guidance & messages with everyone so we can all succeed & thrive in good, caring & Positive, Healthy Ways Inshallah God Willing. To Listen and Consider the Positive & Good Message and Information within Each Religion, focusing on the Good, the Positive in the Advances made in many fields such as Science, Medicine, Mental Health most of all we need to start working at Living, Doing and Being Healthy, Active, Engaged in gaining Knowledge Understanding and Compassion.
This is so we can let go of out dated information, guidance and myths in how to live and Be Well. In Islam there is a saying the what was once False may come to be True and what we were to is True may be False, I believe this is a saying of the Prophet Mohammed PBUH but I have forgotten the reference related to this quote.
In Islam in particular it is said that Allah, God, the Creator guides whom he chooses to Islam however in my view what Leads Individuals & Families to a Religion, or to be Well Educated, Healthy and Balanced is a well rounded Education, were we receive Practical Advice and Training on how to Navigate our lives. This includes Excellent Self-Care and the Importance of a Daily Practice of Self-Care including during stressful times, Crisis, Grief, Loss as neglecting our Self-Care may cause us to spiral down into many chronic conditions that can be prevented by Excellent Self-Care. Excellent Education & Training in what Self-Care Involves such as having good Boundaries and how to Nurture and Create and Maintain Healthy Boundaries can save you Life and the Lives of Others. Part of Excellent Self-Care is having the Freedom to Participate in Open Dialogue or what Muslims Call Ijtihad.
    Search Results
Ijtihad (Arabic اجتهاد) is a technical term of Islamic law that describes the process of making a legal decision by independent interpretation of the legal sources, the Qur'an and the Sunnah. The opposite of ijtihad is taqlid, Arabic for "imitation".Feb 24, 2006
Though this Definition describes Legal Decision making regarding Quran and Sunnah it is part of the moving force behind the Success and Thriving of the Middle East in the 4th Century when even then there were hundreds if not thousands of Women Scholars participating in Advances Science, Medicine, Astronomy, Mental Health Care, Algebra, Math, Chemistry etc when Europe was still in the Dark ages. Maybe there is some good advice and or ideas in this Process that we can use today not for a world controlled by Islam or any other Religion but by Humanity Striving in moving Forward to Healthier Happier Ways of Living Doing and Being.
In every Religion, Culture, Nation, Community, Family and World there have been times when we want to shame name and blame a Person, a Race, Culture or Religion because of Bad Behavior, Bad Advice Truth is the Needed Change Requires Open Dialogue, Research on the issues, research on the Solution in Such a way the Negative issues are dealt with Dignity and Grace and Healthier Information is put forward to address the crisis or issues so instead of People Feeling Angry and Hurt for Decades they are Provided to Education, Train, Support, Follow Up and Access to Programs, Services and Groups to Assist in gaining the Knowledge Understanding and Compassion to as I said let go out outdated Information and Advice and gain the Skills to Lead within Themselves, their Families, Communities, Nations and Worlds.
Many factors affect a Person, Community, Nation and World, Individuals and Families accepting new information, a big part of this is a lack of Excellent Self-Care, Fear and Self Hypnosis ingrained Obsessive Compulsive Behavior which requires Cognitive and other Therapies, Medical Attention and Mental Health Treatments.
This following Hadeeth reminds me that each of us can be part of making a difference and that though no one may ever say thank you your Positive Efforts Can and Do make a Difference.
Hadith no: 884 Report Mistake Permalink
    Narrated: Abu Huraira
Allah's Apostle (SAW) said, "There is a sadaqa to be given for every joint of the human body; and for every day on which the sun rises there is a sadaqa (i.e. charitable gift to be given), the one who establishes justice among people is considered as a sadaqa."
Each of us was created with a Noble Station as is all Creation.
The Responsibility & Duty of Humanity is as Guardians, Messengers, Leaders even we can say we are the Messiah, the Prophets, the Manifestations of God, People of Spirit not that we should go around calling anyone Prophet, Messiah, Buddha, Krishna, Brhamma but Acknowledge for the Love of Allah, the Amazing Spirit, Wonderful Imaginations, Incredible Courage & Strength in living with challenges that are immensely difficult yet they endure.
It was and is the intent off Allah God the Creator that we all Share the Responsibility & Accountability in Spiritual Leadership each of us having ownership in the unfolding Healthier Creative Positive & Truly Juste ways of Living Doing & Being.
There are Gifts in each Religion that work & can be shared, incorporating these into Our Personal Spiritual Practices.
As for Faith this is something acquired through investment in time & caring for ourselves & others.
Practicing & educating the Importance of Self-Care is part of this for Mind Body & Soul
Educating Everyone that enjoying Loving & Caring for our own bodies and sexual needs is part of this spiritual care.
Abstinence in terms of waiting for the right one ie in not just in having sex with anyone is one thing and is acceptable. However Abstinence Sensory Deprivation & Isolation are a recipe for serious physical, medical & mental health issues leading to tragic events, suicides, rape, incest, murder and over the long term amputations, impotence, Dementia, Alzheimer, cancer, violence, depression, crisis, over eating disorders, muscle degeneration, inertia, apathy and many other long term serious conditions and catastrophes
We need to stop the Naming Shaming & Blaming in enjoying pleasuring ourselves, relieving our own sexual needs so the incredibly strong sexual needs & urges are addressed by ourselves without interference though maybe some education so that we can have a calmer stronger frame of Mind Body & Soul
Accepting this need as Healthy & Normal will Inshallah create a Spirit of Care where there are Abundantly less Sexual Violence, Rape, Incest, and assist in helping us have a better frame of Mind when we approach or are approached for Marriage, Relationships over the long term this means Healthier Families, Communities, Nations & Worlds.
Total Abstinence, Trauma and Loss of a Spouse can trigger Mild to Severe Psychosis in Men & Women this condition causes the individual to potentially have poor judgement, inertia, hyper sexual conditions that can lead them into dangerous situations and encounters sexually and in general unable to defend themselves from predators or violence or abusive situations. The sensory deprivation and isolation may cause a person to have feeling for the same sex in many cultures and religions millions of people have committed suicide due the fear shame fear or embarrassment or shunning, excommunication or threats of murder. In the manifestation of Psychosis in combination with sensory deprivation and Isolation many people have either been murdered or have murdered due to many factors.
Psychosis affects Youth, Children & Infants too.
There are several Treatments for Psychosis however the Best is Practicing Excellent Self-Care for Mind Body & Soul and learning to enjoy pleasuring our own bodies for some this includes even when we marry as some individuals are born with High Libidos it is a natural phenomenon in utero when the fetus is exposed to stress, fear, loud noises, chemical influences. (See Dr. David Suzuki's Documentary on Pleasuring Self-Masturbation) Creating stress free environments and monitoring chemical influences can reduce or prevent an Infant being born with a High Libido. Some have found that Deprovera a birth control hormone treats the Psychosis however it does not address the hyper sexual condition ie High Libido.)
Some Individuals in the experience of Psychosis may have a distinct look in their eyes that may be mistaken as an interest in sexual relations however what it is most likely an expression of their Great Suffering, Grieving some people may feel that the individual is in love with them, interested in them however what they are really saying and looking for is Love. Not just a one night stand, not used for their money or connections, but a Relationship with Respect, Equality, Caring someone to share Life with. Dignity in all aspects of the of their Lives, Relationship, Marriage, Career, Vision, Goals & Success.

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "When a man dies, his deeds come to an end except for three things: Sadaqah Jariyah (ceaseless charity); a knowledge which is beneficial, or a virtuous descendant who prays for him (for the deceased)."[Muslim].

Kafaya Adebayo sister, excessive spending overall is a problem. Weather you buy anime stuff or anything else, it is a problem when you can't hold money. Best way to stop this way of behaviour is to actually think about the value of the money.
For instance, if you buy one Sasuke doll for 20$, how happy would that really make you compared to a giving it to a homeless man who hasn't eaten in a couple of days.

I hope most Muslim women take heed who ask for luxuries. Things that are out of basic necessities. Like expensive cosmetic products, designer clothes and in countries like India, gold.
