I headed out to Big Sur to watch the Geminid Meteor shower of 2012!
I experimented with two things for this video. Persistent Meteors and dimmed Star Trails.
In the second sequence I really wanted to have persistent meteors. It was very labor intensive to get the shooting stars to linger. Basically I had to cut each meteor out and then have that be on a higher track. Then have that track fade out. (I hope that made sense!)
I used Star Trails in the first and third sequence because that is much less labor intensive way to show meteors and have them persist.
I developed a new method for making star trails. In normal star trails, the trails are bright and cause the image to lose detail in both the stars and the Milky Way. In my new technique, I've made it so the trail is dimmer and the original frame is more pronounced so that there is still detail in both the stars and Milky Way.

I'm literally crying. This is so beautiful. One of my biggest wishes in life is to watch a meteor shower like this, live. Such a majestic sight to behold.
You can! One is happening tonight
***** everywhere? or just in areas?
OMG just realized I said that exactly a year ago hahaha
***** Good thing I live in Nova Scotia! Lol
***** Yeah its on the east coast of Canada
***** Where you live?
What is going through the mind of someone who clicks dislike on this knowing full well what to kind of expect?
Flat earthers.. when they shoot up from the horizon it destroys their entire narrative.
1:18 damnit sun!
The dislikes are flat earthers
Yep
You are my favorite galaxy too!
Have a Great spherical live floting in the nothingness.🤯🤯🤭🤫🤦♂️ 🍿🍿 Explotion in 321
If you haven't seen this one from 2012 before, I really hope you enjoy it and would love to know what you think :-)

#space #meteor #timelapse
Can I ask where that beach was filmed at?
GunShard
wow, you proved the earth was flat before it was cool. funny how those star trails totally debunk being on a globe.
Great video. Is there any video or tutorial on persistent meteors. I can do it on StarStax using comet mode but that induces star trails. I love the efdect of persistent meteors against pinpoint star background. Kudos.
Please be aware, that half of the trails seen here are actually airplanes. Some rough ways to distinguish meteors from airplanes:
Airplanes:
- curved trails
- blinking
- more or less constant intensity
- in all directions, especially also from horizon upwards
Meteors:
- absulte straight trails
- no blinking
- intensity rising and falling in a nice slope
- in many directions, but originating from a common center (the constallation in which the center lies actually gives meteor showers their name)
Nice exercise: Watch again and try to distinguish airplanes and meteors.
Airplanes? More of hose are satellites....
Not half of them are airplanes. Maybe 1/3
Amazing video! These are the kinds that really portray the beauty of what lies beyond earth. Nice work.
Very beautifully captured!
This is one of the better meteor showers that I have seen and the traffic makes it really look interesting. Great catch on your part. Loved it.
I lay down on my lawn on a blanket in the middle of December to watch this. I saw 7 meteors and felt very proud :) So beautiful.
This was hauntingly beautiful! Thanks for sharing!

This was excellent! Awesome job Kenneth!
Usually I do between 20-40 second exposures. And I have the camera fire every 30 - 60 seconds.

Hi Saji,
If you like night timelapse, I have several at my channel. Just click on my name and you should be able to find it. I have mostly night clouds, but also stars. Most of the videos near the top have some kind of time lapse.

this is beautiful!
just saw 5 of it this night!!! it was so cool!!!! :)
Awesome... I wish I had the equipment and the expertise to pull this off. What were the exposures and how many shots per minutes were you taking, more or less? I'll be trying it out with a mounted Canon SX30is this weekend (with modifications to extend exposure). Did you have any issues with the cold and batteries not lasting you the whole night? Again, awesome work!
you should share you new method of making the trails. this is awesome btw!
Super awesome! How did you get the stars to trail like that - as if theyre a meteor or something? Do you have a tutorial? Stunning! Thanks!
This is beatutiful, truely a work of art :D

This is absolutely beautiful btw music is great.
Great stuff Kenneth. How did you get that last image, Alabama Hills, Double Arch? Is that a single, long exposure or did you use Registax or similar to stack multiple images?
wow... this was truly magnificent. I really love star gazing, but I cannot step outta the house when it's after 8 in the night (thanks to Indian superstitions). But one day, I could break out of that, and step out to enjoy the night sky. Thank you so much for this... beautiful sight.
Very surreal, I hope I get to see the few coming up this year
Hey man awesome vid :) I was just wondering, how many pictures do you take every minute or second and how much space does this timelapse take in gb or tb? Thank you
Beautiful.
This is just beautiful and amazing
I have witnessed only one what I would refer to as a massive meteor shower back in 1966 when I was 4 I remember it being summer because we had just moved from Long Beach Ca to NW Arkansas. it looked like someone was up in space with a grinder spraying meteorites covering the entire horizon of my vision, remember at one point there was a line of about 60 traveling horizontal to my vision
Kenneth. this is probably the best Time Lapse Astrophotography I`ve seen so far,you make everything look so unreal,Folks don`t see that, even when they sit there & watch the Night Sky for Hours. Keep up the great work. Cheers Kenneth.
This is awesome
You've inspired me

this is amazing!
you are amazing, Mr. Brandon. I just hit the subscribe button :)
I WISH TO SEE AT LEAST 10 OR MORE SHOOTING STARS. PLEASE ❤️
Beautiful...
Yes! Well sort of. These time-lapses use different techniques to better show the meteors. One of these techniques is the star trails you see in the first and third sequences. The other technique in the second sequence is one I developed that I call "Persistent Meteors."
simply wonderful :)
It is so beautiful!! I am going to have a chance to see the Meteor Shower in 2017!! The meteor shower is going to be tomorrow in the morning, i'm very excited! It is my frist time seeing a meteor shower! :)

Could you explain/make a tutorial on how to do persistent meteor trails? I'd really like to know: it's a really awesome technique and I'd like to use it in future time lapses of mine.
Josh Thum What persistent meteor trails?
LONG exposures creates the trails.
