  • HLN's Erica Hill, a former co-anchor of CBS "This Morning," says that when she learned former colleague Charlie Rose was fired from CBS for sexual harassment, it made her reflect on all the times she was demeaned and degraded in the workplace over the course of her career at numerous networks.

    As a young woman working for a large grocery chain, I endured many inappropriate comments, phone calls at my home, hearing the unique sound of my supervisors diesel car, frequently drive by my home, leaving gifts between my storm dr& front dr, which I returned to him at work discreetly with the help of his female assistant. He never touched me, but verbally expressed interest in doing so. It creeped me out, he was my father's age, I was 20. My God, and as I continued on in the workforce for 42 years, I saw so many men, smart, intelligent men, act this way at the Government office I worked at, one getting fired. Predators they are called, and many were what I would consider a friend, a friend with a serious problem.

    Yes, it's true that attractive young women get hit on, and sometimes abused by older men in the media industry. Since we're in this national mood for truth telling, let's also admit that a lot of women get ahead because they are attractive, and men with power want to hit on them, not because they have the most talent.

      How was he cruel or a bully to Erica Hill?
      She never said that.....
      It is very disrespectful to ACTUAL victims of sexual abuse, to compare their situation to a situation of "finger pointing". Let's be serious!!!

    • @Psalm_27.4
      @Psalm_27.4 3 місяці тому

      @@walterhigo7658 Yes, I agree that finger pointing is far different than sexual abuse. Let me add that I do not think that it was Charlie Rose who was the Mr. Finger Pointer she referred to. She said it happened early in her career. Just wanted to clear that up.
      To be totally honest, the Finger Pointer‘s attitude and vibe is the issue. I admit that I wasn’t there to hear his tone of voice. I’m suspicious that he had a mean spirit. I don’t see male co-anchors using the fingerpoint method of back and forth dialogue during sports broadcasts.
      The Finger Pointer was rude, at best. When you truly respect someone, and aren’t threatened by or resentful of their presence, you don’t fingerpoint to let them know when it’s OK to speak. There is something very petty and mean about that Maybe he did that with male co-anchors, too. I think that it is still rather low-level behavior. It says, “I want the power, and I’m senior to you, so this is how I roll.” 👈🏻👉🏻
      These so-called rookie initiation tactics are passive aggressive forms of bullying, and have been tolerated so long that they are considered “paying your dues.” No, that is called being a passive aggressive dominator, and there is a price to be paid. I’m guilty of being mean to people. We’re all guilty. Whether at work or outside of work, we’ve all done doo-doo to people. We will either repent and humbly receive God’s mercy through His Son’s, Christ’s, shed blood, or we will foolishly justify ourselves, and stand on (false) self-righteousness and pay eternally in Hell. For me, I choose repentance and accept God’s mercy, because I know otherwise I’d be in Hell forever. You know, it only takes one sin to deserve Hell forever. I most certainly have more than one sin! So, I accept the MERCY!
      It is sad that people think that it’s OK to mistreat others!!! It’s not, never has been, and never will be! In the end, as Dr, Jordan Peterson says, “Nobody gets away with anything!!”

    I think we are mixing issues here. The "don't speak until I point at you", very possibly had nothing to do with "sexual harassment" and everything to do with seniority and experience. She admit she was in her early 20's and he was in his 70's. You aren't automatically on the same level. The sexual stuff is completely inappropriate and should be handled harshly. But, each accusation and each case needs to judged on the evidence for that case.

    • @delirous8
      @delirous8 6 років тому +1

      Exactly as long as he did not touch her, verbally abuse her or ask her for sexual favors. Pointing at someone is not harassment. Erica Hill has no case, she works in the media and often times pointing is necessary to avoid overtalking in front of the camera. She is really talking about nothing, she acts like a woman with ADD. A victim remembers what happened to them but she is going back and forth, not making eye contact with the host.

Like, Gayle was officially there for the entertainment hour but yet they had Erica doing all of the talking and Gayle barely said anything. Like I loved Erica and felt that she was flawlessin her verbal sharing but why have Gayle on if they were not going to let her say anything. Then all of a sudden Erica was gone. Having worked with Erica Hill while she was at CBS, I can say that she is smart, witty, knew everybody's name and had a great sense of humor. There were no traces of diva-like behavior (except we were told when we leave her presence to never show your back to her until you exit the studio/room....No, wait, that's The Crown. There is a downside to binge watching).She is simply stating that your view about something can change in light of the context or new circumstances. She never said she was assaulted nor was she begging for sympathy. I did see the Charlie "finger pointing prompting" which he did with the other co-hosts as well. I don't know if they found it amusing at the time but after he left in disgrace saw it in a different light. I don't know if this interview directing was approved or sanctioned by the Executive Producer.I do have a "What If" question. Suppose Jane Pauley, Barbara Walters or Diane Sawyer were asked to be part of the cast of CBS This Morning and the other co-hosts were John Dickerson and Jeff Glor. If the female co-host "quarterbacked" the interviews and acted as a traffic cop, would the other male anchors object and find it demeaning OR would they see it as the elder correspondent exerting her role as the senior person? Is it a paternalistic issue or a case of deferring to the more seasoned person? Based on the pattern of most local/national news where a younger female host is usually paired with an older male host, we may never be able to experience that scenario.

    Erica, we feel for you. And here's what people are thinking about your presentation (taken from the Comments below):
    "Wtf actually happened to her? Legitimate victims of sexual assault have a hard time getting a conviction because of BS cases like this one."
    "So now it's not about sexual harassment, it's about mean and bossy bosses? This is something everyone has to deal with, male and female bosses can be mean. Maybe women aren't cut out for the pressures of business."
    "While we learn of cases where women are being groped, inappropriately touched, raped and forced by their bosses to perform sexual favours, Erica Hill comes out of nowhere to tell us that she was "pointed at" and that somehow that is "Just as bad" as ACTUAL sexual harassment? PLEASE!!!!!!!!!"
    "He asked you to go for a cup of coffee...OMG I'd get nightmares every night. That's coffee rape."
    "I am a Chinese naturalized American citizen. I always think American news reporters are borderline ADHD near the brink of a nervous breakdown all the time. I was puzzled until now."
    "So only women have been mistreated? I guess for every man on Earth, every day is just awesome, except for the men who died fighting wars, the men who were murdered, the men who were bullied, the men who were molested, the men who were falsely imprisoned for crimes they didn't commit, the men who lost their jobs during recessions, the men who were killed by radical Islamic terrorists, the men who died in mass shootings, the men who lost money in divorces because of gold digging women, the men who've been discriminated against because of their race, ethnicity, or sexual orientation, and I guess a few others."

    What Erica Hill described about her boss when she was 21 is on point disgusting. What Erica Hill described about Charlie Rose was merely the result of her taking a job with an established star. In the star system, which is based on ratings, the star is supposed to run the show in the way that makes the star a star. Not all stars want their staff to shine. Charlie Rose apparently harassed other women abusively. Egomaniac might fit the facts as described in the case of Charlie Rose’s pointing at Erica Hill. I’ve worked for several egomaniacal stars. If you want to learn from them, even as a man, one learns that one needs to do one’s job by speaking when asked to speak (putting a nicer gloss on the rudeness).
    Banter has always been part of office life. The rules got to be unfathomable for decent men and women in the 1970s, when the glass ceiling began to be broken. What would be helpful to all might be a delineation between what can be said and what can Not be said or done. Apparently, after 40 years, nobody knows. Why not? The lines should be clear. Dress codes too.

I dont understand how we went from sexual harassment allegations to mean, or bossy bosses? Mean and bossy bosses is not just a male thing, but they are inferring its a male problem. Is Erica Hill trying to protect herself from criticism because she knew about Charlie Rose and said nothing? The whole thing seems strange.

    Work should be about work. The director, not one of the co-hosts, should be in charge of who is asking the next question, he's the one in charge of the people operating the cameras. Wouldn't want to be a camera operator at CBS, got to keep one eye on Charlie's finger, see where it moves.Erica Hill is her husband's wife, and her children's mother. A quality boss would ask her how her kids are doing in school for a conversation starter, maybe ask her if she'd like a cup of coffee, and then go get her one from the vending machine. Poor babies ....women enabled these guys by setting up other women...and then ignoring their complaints ...and how could this go so far if women didn’t hush it up...so their personal careers were more important the the well-being of their female peers....women Aren’t friends with other women....and this poor dear what did she endure ? Her boss asked her out for coffee?

    I always liked Erica Hill but have to wonder if some of what she is referring to was based on her "jr. position" on the show - which is not unreasonable - or her gender? I'd like to know more about that - are "jr." males subject to similar limitations or just females?

    Wait a second, if your questions were super' smart and you asked questions better than anybody, you´d have been conducting your own show. Maybe you had to go through a learning process, I don´t know. I just don´t see anything wrong with somebody pointing at you as a cue to have your input. Men should never use their power to force themselves onto women but bringing this finger pointing thing as if it were remotely related to sexual harassment is too much. It sounds like the sexual harassment case gave you a chance to bring out your own demons relating to the story of this man.

    Can we all start sharing stories about the million grievances or slights that we've experienced throughout our lives? I just don't understand this new trend, every single person has had bad stuff in their lives, this is really weird. It also reeks of political opportunism for some reason, people are saying this is a reaction to Trump's presidency. Weird.

    You're upset because your 70 year old coworker told you when to speak? How much more experience did he have than you? You were lucky to be learning under him. How many men weren't given that opportunity?
    I'm not saying having more experience than someone gives a person a license to mistreat them. That is something that some abusive bosses try to get away with, and it should be stopped. But what you're describing isn't abusive behavior, it's mentorship. You should be grateful for the chance to learn under someone with so much more experience, and instead, you're self-entitled.

      I know right, she is just a thin skinned woman and seems opportunistic. She feels harassed cause her co-anchor wanted her to talk after he talks. Really. Isn't that what happens in co-anchor newscast. Also seniority is valued, the co-anchor who has most experience and years always goes first unless otherwise. That is etiquette. Weak segment, weak argument for her. Just an emotionalized woman trying to stir up stuff.

    This is just so damn sad that these women had to go through this. All these men is power for so many years, and women feeling they had to take it to keep there jobs. Disgusting. I hate the word Allegations, makes it sound as if it may not have happened. When it Did. Proud of these women for finally speaking out. We all know there's many other men in power that are fearful and hiding under there so called beds, knowing they will soon be discovered. And they will be. Karma is a bitch.
