Bill Staines - Sourdough/The Miner's Song

- Bill Staines has been recording folk music for over 40 years. He writes most of the songs he sings, which are tales that he has woven of Americana adventures. I made this video for a medley of two of his songs, "Sourdough" and "The Miner's Song". It's about the 1899 Alaska Gold Rush. My cousin provided me with the beautiful pictures that I used during the instrumental parts at the beginning and end of the video.
This medley is from Bill's album "Wild, Wild, Heart" from 1985. The lonesome-sounding violin is played by Stuart Shulman.
Rest in peace, Bill. Died 5 December 2021. I live across the channel mentioned, over in old Juneau, where mines past and present still hold influence

17yo living in London, England. I found out about Bill maybe 4 years ago and i cant get enough of his work. This will always be my favourite song of his and i hope to visit Alaska one day.
Thank you Bob Marshall and R.I.P Bill Staines
One of my favorites by Bill. Today is a sad day as I learn of his passing. "One day you make two dollars, the next, you're glory bound." RIP, you wonderful folky.
😢
Haunting violin.
Years ago I learned this song on my banjo, from a anonymous cassette copy. It was - erroneously - attributed to Guy Clark. Due to this misapprehension, and not knowing the title of the song or Bill Staines, I never located it online. Just stumbled on it here by accident here after 25 years. What a pleasure to hear it again!
I need to learn this on Banjo, got the guitar part down.
@@bbjorkyt ~ Funny because I had the same experience with hearing Bill sing 'Rooty toot toot for the moon' as a kid and it took me a 1/4 century to find the lyrics/chords and discover that it was written by Greg Brown :)
I uploaded my video of this song almost two years ago. I haven't watched it since then, but I just did watch it again, and I have to say that I pretty much outdid myself, if I do say so myself. This is pretty good! OK, I'll stop patting myself on the back.
Thanks Bob , appreciated...
As a prospector... one of my favorites!
Hell yeah you did bob thanks for sharing lovely tune
You really did. Thanks!
A wonderful job!!!
Seeing comments about his passing saddens me deeply as I just recently found his music. I live halfway across the world. And his music makes me feel like I've been to the places he sings about.
RIP Sir.
Bill is certainly one of the Great Song Writers There Ever Was…Love His Music
Missing him…
Expanded Perspectives podcast hit a home run with this song
I love this song! I couldn't find lyrics on line so I had to write them out myself, old-school. Figured out how to play the melody "Sourdough" well enough - so simple and sweet. Peaceful even. And "The Miner's Song" is a great ballad. Used to listen to Bill Staines live often when I was at Cornell, then I moved west. Miss that.
I was privileged to see Bill Staines in concert a few years ago. Loved all he played, but unfortunately, he didn't play this which is one of my favorites.
Rest in Peace Bill -- we will keep your music alive ❤
I can close my eyes and open my heart and still be there
Very soulful and very wonderful!
04mscentrum Thanks--to Tom Russell, and to Bill Staines!! Gorgeous.......
We need music now, in 2017..... for darn sure. Blessings
love this song thank you.
This song makes me so happy but unwanted sadness because of the want to in the soul but reality and LIFE has control and you can just watch it pass by .
I listen to this when i view the silent mountains outisde the small, hand-drifted mine I work in. Nothin to see but snowy peaks and a small village. I love the view, and the silence when we shut down the machinery.. it's a nice thought to bear in mind when you enter the mines once again.
Blood, sweat and tears... that is how we feel the years.
You have a gift in the surroundings you to which you make reference GoldenNorway1. I hope you count your blessings daily.
This song is amazing!
wish the people quickly get a lot of gold
From an old West Virginia boy, far from home, this song really speaks to my heart.... Thank you for posting this song.
Reminds me of my first and only (so far) journey to Alaska. Can't hold back the tears :'(
Seriously to see the wilderness of Alaska is worth living for it's own :)
One of my favorite Bill Staines tunes, still working on it, Oh he’s also a neighbor here on the Southern Coast.
Beautiful song thanks for posting it! Glad I found it, I just typed in “gold mining songs” gave this one a shot and ooh boy!
So sad. So wonderful !
Found this song... one of my favorites being a prospector!
Thank you for sharing brother. Yahuwah Elohim bless you 💛🤲💛
I love this so much!
Thanks for the kind words, @Jim. This is one of the more difficult videos I have made. I was thinking "where am I going to find a picture of gold miners on the beach in Nome?" But I did. Just takes a little perseverance and ingenuity (and luck).
A little late but thank you for sharing this song!
Thank you for posting this song with the incredible photos. Absolutely beautiful
Thanks for posting this song and the impressive pictures. I found it accidentally when checking the Internet for mining Songs.
Ulrich Hein Same.
Ulrich Hein same
Same!
Hehe, same ;)
I can't tell you how many time I have listened to this song in the past few months. This is a great song, but it seems to be the only one on youtube.
Thanks so much for posting this.
I love this song!
Great tune, great video.....
next time you see Bill in concert pay close attention to his guitar and how he plays...
Now Bill is glory bound. He finally found his gold and went to by a farm.
Playing a full book of scratchers is my version of mining for gold.
Love the song...and the pictures!
Very nice video.
I can't thank you enough for posting this. It's exquisitely beautiful, a pleasure to listen to and look at. Thank you.
You're welcome, ***** ! I even struck up an online conversation with Bill Staines to get his permission to use the music. He's a cool guy. Here's another "story" song he recorded that you might like. He didn't write this one, it was written by the legendary Tom Russell: Bill Staines - Alkali. I contacted Tom Russell, too, before making the video, to get permission and also to get the story behind the song. He shared the story, but I no longer have his message, and I've forgotten the story.
BEAUTIFUL, thank's !!
This made my day - and yet it's so much more.
I truly love it, thanks a lot for sharing !
Excellent video job and terrific music. Thanks for sharing with us.
Phenomenal
FOR YOU DAD,,,
There you go Bhoy! That's your Parcel !
RIP
Amazing photos, I never knew Alaska was so beautiful. Makes me want to go. The music is great and the songs so appropriate for the photos. Thank you for taking the time to make this and post it. It is easy to see why Sarah stays there and doesn't want to live in D.C.!
Thank you Mr. Marshall!!!
Thank you for this...this is nicely done.
As a ol fan of Bill's it is a nice tribute to his work..!
Thanks again and Happy New Year to you and yours..
Ross
it seems like bill mighta wrote this song for me for, indeed, i did settle in portland town
Funny thing - I never heard Bill do "Alkali" though it was often requested as an encore. It is my favorite song of his repertoire. And it would make a really fascinating video!
I found a a book that said “songs.
Of a sour dough” and I sreach this and find this masterpiece Aslo the book is from 1919 in good condition
Nice song
Forgot to mention that I thought your representation / photos for this video ... are awesome!!
this so reminds me of landing in Leadville Colo.... as a kid... i ate steak and shimp ... being a bus boy just fired from the Climax ... i got lost in that huge mine, i was completely green to mining!..... Fired again..and quit the hardware store... oh sht.. 20 below they say tonight! nothing much happening except broke ... here come black cloud mine. thank you very much !!
mining is a unique type of work so you should sing about it beautiful
There's strange things done 'neath the midnight sun by the men who moil for gold, but the strangest thing that I ever did see was that night on the marge of lake lafarge when they cremated Sam Mcgee. Now Sam Mcgee was from Tennasee...
In my youth, I memorized numerous Robert Service poems; they're such fabulous stories! If you get an opportunity- read "the Ballad of the Northern Lights". It's nearly 10 pages- but it's incredible what a storyline- as well as what a wordsmith Service was in his un-matched ability to describe the lights and the scenes!
Awesome, Bob!! Love Bill's voice, & the story he told! Your photos of miners are incredible, where ever did you find them? You must have searched for hours on end! And loved all your color photos of Alaska, especially the Polar Bear and the 2 Caribou with the Aurora Borealis, & the mountains with lakes
& trees, wow wee! And the log cabin in the snow @ night, so cold & pristine.
Thank you for making this old timey video, the music & solos were so fine!!
Couple this song with Nanci Griffith/Arlo Guthrie's version of Tecumseh Valley(Towns Van Zandt). Teardrops may fall!
+Larry Games Ooh, sonically those two songs go together wonderfully. Thematically, though, they don't match. But I do love "Tecumseh Valley"; I may take that one into consideration for a video. I've also got a few Kate Campbell songs lined up for videos; her songs have such imagery.
By the way, lyrics to most of Bill's songs are on his website. You can also find concert info there.
Listening to it while mining in FF xiv
still mining to it
I agree, "Alkali" would be a good song to make a video for. I'll add it to my to-do list. Should be a lot easier than "Sourdough Train", lots of imagery.
is this on itunes?
@Jim Andreas, I created a video for "Alkali", as you requested, but you have Contact Lock enabled, so I can't notify you. This is all I've got. I can't even send you a Contact Request since I don't know your real UA-cam username, just your "real name". Hopefully you will see this.
