This is John's wife, Monika. I have been suffering from thumb pain for the past 2.5 months. It gets worse when I lay down. After doing these simple stretches and strength building exercises just 1 round, I feel the pain has greatly reduced and I feel the blood flowing to the area that has been bound up and hurting. I am forever grateful and feeling blessed to have stumbled upon your video today. Thank you for being a caring human being and sharing such important healing information. You are a blessing. P.S. You are very good at explaining and educating us on the causes and solution.
Your video helped me to reduce my pain. Most of the "thumb pain" videos focus only on the thumb. Working those forearm muscles and nerves made the difference for me. Thanks so much!
Thanks so much! I only just began developing Texter's Thumb and this helped reduce the pain. I will definitely be returning to this page every now and then...
Literally am only 3:47 seconds in and after doing the first stretch 1 time, my thumb pain is 90% diminished. Now, I know I have not even really begun to address the issue, but I am pretty shocked at how the tenderness is basically gone. I figured the pretty intense deep tender pain meant it would take awhile to heal. I guess I should watch the rest of the video and do the prescribed stretches. 😂 Thank you so much!
Omg, I've been dealing with this in my right hand for years! I tried chiro, physio, acupuncture, massage, and no one has ever named the issue, probably because they've never dealt with this. These exercises make sense and seem easily enough to do everyday. I have to try them. Thank you!
OH wow! I stumbled accross your video and I have had this pain for weeks and worsened so much that I can't open bottles or hold up a cup of coffee. I did this excersise along with the video and the pain has lessen. Thank you!!!!
This clip may save my life!! Because I was suffering from thumbs hurt for like 4-5 months 😢😢 all I did is waer the thumb brace… it’s make my right hand feel better but the left hand still feel hurt .anyway I’ll follow your guides and will update if I can get better 🤩🤩🤩 oh .. the cause is from playing Pugg iPad tooooo muchhhhhhh of course ~~~~
Thank you so much for sharing these. My thumb was paining badly and I work on computers so cannot avoid typing. And this helped me relieve the pain immediately after doing these exercises. Thanks a ton again :)
thanks, im an artist and draw a lot. recently I sprained my wrist and it healed enough for me to draw again. After drawing very long i started feeling discomfort and some pain on my thumb and forearm.
You've got it! Keep after these exercises and be sure to check out our Elbow, Wrist and Hand program through the app if you need a bit more guidance! bit.ly/tryprehabYT
I just turned 78 and have been having pain in the area of my left thumb that is highlighted in red in your diagram. This isn't caused by texting because I rarely text, and when I do, I don't use my thumb. The pain I have is especially noticed when I try to open a jar, thus my grip. I wonder if what I have is arthritis, and if so, will those exercises help?
Excellent video. Thank you. I was diagnosed with Golfer’s Elbow. I have pain on the inside of my elbow and sometimes stinging feeling. Could you do a video on this topic?
Funny, I never injured my left hand, and I barely ever text, and that's where I have the pain in my left thumb. Meanwhile I've broken my right and injured it multiple times and it's fine. The first stretch in this video helped a lot. So Thanks! Went through 3-4 videos that weren't helpful at all till I land here.
Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you, first one worked like a charm, yesterday I flipped my right thumb in the Gym, it was painful, thought of not going to the gym today but the pain is 80% less with the first wrist bend wow you are amazing
I have been having thumb pain from accidentally trapping my thumb on 2 H2omelons and I need to end it. And I work a lot with my L thumb e.g. pushing asepto syringes etc. I found you on my search. I did some of the exercises you recommend and yeah took out the pain. TYSM! Definitely will exercise my R thumb as well!
I’m a manicurist/nail tech-nail designer for 20 years…now starting to feel thumb joint pain in both hands. I’ll definitely try to apply those exercises…❤
thank you, been dealing with this for a little while now. the thumb inside fist stretch is hitting it right in the problem. felt some relief immediately. tyvm
I don't text but I have this kind of pain after a very long 6-hour drive using my sportbike where position is very lean forward. All my weight are on my thumbs or in these areas. It's been bugging me for months! Got to try these exercises.
Great video. I have a question I was hoping you would answer. I have had pretty sever pain in the base of the thumb, but x-rays showed minimal arthritis in the joint. The trapezium looked relatively good. Could this be Dequevains Tenosynovitis instead?
Great question! Unfortunately, hard to answer without being able to do a thorough exam on you but what we do know is that encouraging gentle and comfortable mobility to the area and working on strengthening the muscles that help support the joint can be helpful in tackling that thumb pain! Would definitely recommend giving these exercises a try!
Great video, thank you! I've sent it to multiple people struggling with the pain. I have a question, what do you think about a push brace? Is it helpful to wear it if we have a straining job?
Thanks so much for sharing! A brace can certainly play a role but depends on the person and what they need - my rule of thumb (no pun intended) is that if it helps to allow symptoms to calm down enough to be able to build things back up then it may be worth it for a period of time!
Finkelstein stretch is really painful. I hurt the back of my thumb after long drive and this video will really help me I reckon. Thank u so much I will do all of it
My thumb started to hurt after starting to do pull ups. I guess my grip isnt very good. Ive done 2 of the exercises mentioned in the vid a few times and it feel 95% better already. Actually shocked it worked so quickly. Thnak you
Awesome video!! Lifesaver as always! Other than the Wrist Extensor Stretch, that you mention doing 3 sets of 30 to 45 seconds 3 times per day, how many sets and how many times per day should I do all the other stretches and exercises??
Diego, so glad you loved the video! The nerve stretch can be done 2-3 times a day shooting for about 10-15 reps is a good idea as long as it feels comfortable and does not overly aggravate symptoms. The eccentric exercise with the weight can be done 1-2 times per day depending on symptoms and start with low reps with this one and work your way up! These are very dependent on your symptoms and you are in charge of what feels comfortable for your body that day!
What if the pain is localized to the trapezium bone area? Under the soft tissue of the thumb area. Pressure feels like "good" pain and massaging the area with a small ball relives the pain, but it returns. Came from repeatedly hitting the space bar while gaming, so similar movement in the thumb, but the pain isn't across the top of the thumb. Similar symptoms of tenosynovitis. Tightness, weakness gripping or twisting jars.
Would recommend giving it a try and seeing how it feels! Listen to your body and understand that you never want to push through significant pain or discomfort! You've got this!
Thanks for your information. Unfortunately I think I just flat out tore something in my thumb and wrist. I can't do any exercises. Way too painful. Could be DQT I guess. I play bass guitar and have heard a lot of guitar players get DQT. I've been dealing with this for 5 months now. I basically can't do anything with my left hand. Pain and popping feeling at the base of my thumb when I move it. Pain and popping feeling on the top side of my wrist if I grip or pick up something. I'm miserable and ready to cut off my hand
Thank you for this video help!! Have had thumb pain for decades. In my 70's and i am a close up magician so i need to use my thumbs and all fingers of hands for card manipulations. Will try these exercises and see how they hopefully help me!! Gary☁️🙂☁️
Hello, i dont have texters thumb or gamer thumb. I do write alot for 2 weeks now. My thumb has a tingling sensation numbness feeling. Ive been resting n excerising my thumb from other videos. My hand, my other fingers, my wrist, n my forearm arw fine. Its just my thumb where your fingerprints are thats feeling this way. Will this video help. I dont know what else to do. Oh yeah, ive been putting warm compression on it as well.
Thanks for the info dear. Hurt the muscle or tendon in that area after a nasty fall to the ground. Feels really uncomfortable when I use the bottom part of my hand for grabbing or twisting the hand. Already feeling better :)
I have both Tenynovitis and arthritis where of the thumb joins the hand. I have been to a physiotherapist with no luck and am supposed to have surgery on it in a few months. I am wondering to things if surgery would be necessary and if these exercises would help the pain as well as get rid of the problem... Thank you
Hey Craig! Appreciate you reaching out and thank you for the info! Hard to say if surgery is needed without a thorough evaluation but what we do know is that performing strengthening exercises prior to surgical intervention can serve a big role in our outcomes following surgery. I would recommend trying these and if symptoms aren't worsened, continue with them! We also have a elbow, wrist and hand program through our app which may be worth taking a peek at if wanting to really try further conservative treatment prior to surgery. Take a peek and see if it looks like it's right for you! theprehabguys.com/membership-2/
What if just bending my thumb into making a fist is really painful (at the base/start of wrist) or even giving a thumbs up is difficult without a lot of pain? Is this all part of de Quervain’s? Even if I try to place my thumb flat against my index finger is extremely painful... Is this all from de Quervain’s? Thanks
Very dependent on the severity of your symptoms but these can be worth a shot as long as symptoms aren't worsened! Introducing healthy mobility and strengthening of the muscles around the joint can be beneficial for individuals with RA just listen to your body and respect where you are at!
Does this help with Post-traumatic arthritis (PTA) of the thumb or would I need to do something else? My thumb has been hurting for over a year and that is what doc said I had.
Give them a try and see how they feel! With any arthritic based symptoms we want to respect how it feels and work through a range that feels comfortable everyday! Meet yourself where you are at!
Hi, may I know if I should do these exercises when I'm already diagnosed with OA on the CMC? Right now I'm using a brace for a few months already and recently also have started taping with a kinesio tape.
Hello! We recommend trying the exercises and staying active as the exercises will help strengthen surrounding musculature but have the additional benefit of lubricating the joint!
Hello Mam, I was so so happy to have this content, I never knew there was something like "texter's thumb" coined, but it does exist - FOR ALL MOBILE TEXTERS ! Thank you for making such content. REQUEST :- Mam, i have had an possible extension injury (got a football shoot directly at my thumb, 3 years back) No fracture or crack was there, and cured it for that point of time, but that thing -injury remains still with me, every winter, i get similar feeling like a texter's thumb. ALSO, When i join my hands in PRAYER POSITION, I can bring out my left thumb (injured one) extraordinarily Outwards from the Plane of Joined hands, as compared to th right thumb. Please please do suggest some exercise for strengthening and relief from occasional pain.
Thanks for the kind words! Happy you found us! Give some of these exercises a try and then I would recommend checking our our elbow wrist and hand rehab program through our state of the art app! bit.ly/tryprehabYT
That's a beautiful ring you have on. Someone loves you.😁 Thanks very much for the video, it does help. My issue is that I have a ganglion cyst on both top and bottom of wrist. The one on the underside of my wrist, is inflaming things in that area.
Thank you so much for the kind words and we are so glad that the video has helped! Stay consistent with these and try your best to keep after them while respecting any discomfort from the ganglion cyst.
I have pain that runs from base of thumb up the back of the thumb and just past the second joint. It is quite debilitating at times when I try to pick something up, untwist a bottle cap, pull my seatbelt over to buckle. My doctor said it was arthritis and prescribed Voltaren but it has little effect. I don’t believe this is arthritis but rather a nerve. Any tips on how to relieve it? I’ve tried Biofreeze, Hempvana, etc. Very little relief.
Hey there thanks for sharing! Have you tried any of these exercises? I would give them a go and see how they feel as long as they aren't worsening symptoms and feel well tolerated as stated in the video.
Definitely recognizing where you are at is important! As mentioned in the video, that stretch can be very intense for many! Could be beneficial to try the exercises in the video that don't give you much discomfort and progress to the stretches once symptoms subside! Rooting for you!
I basically cured mine but it took 1 year. I didn't stretch at all when it was flared up. Try to avoid as much activity as you can when it's in pain. Ice it a ton. Do rehab on your shoulders and mobility. Eat lots of protein and massage out the tight parts on your forearms. When you do get better slowly introduce some stretches and wrist exercises. But still I avoid downward dog and push-ups.
You can certainly increase your reps as long as you are not dealing with a significant and limiting amount of muscle soreness following! We use these muscles quite a bit throughout the day so performing increased reps to improve muscle endurance can be helpful!
Wow, great video! I just developed texting thumbs. All your stretches really helped. The Finkelstein stretch was brutal, but I adjusted it as you stated and doing it very gently and not at a deep angle.
Question- I’ve had a tendency to experience discomfort in this area of my left thumb for years, but I can pop my thumb and it feels better. This might happen a few times per week, and on a bad day, a few times per day. Pain tests in this video don’t yield any results. I just don’t know if it’s just a simple gas buildup in that one particular joint with no remedy, and if it’s even associated with Gamer’s Thumb/Texter’s Thumb.
Question… if I’m doing these exercises, for instance, the resistance band thumb extensions. My injury is basically the tendon keeps popping in and out of place of the wrist joint. Should I still attempt the exercise?
Good question, David and had to say without doing a thorough evaluation and assessing the tendon movement during this exercise. Good rule of thumb (no pun intended) is if it's causing pain when doing that exercise don't do it and focus more on isometric work to strengthen the tendon and for tendon health. Hope that helps!
After a year My Doctotor told me you have week legement in your thumb ,even estroeid injection in my thumb got my problem and pain worse and now it has pain and week and stiff. Could you please tell me that exersice will help me to get rid off my problem .Thanks
Try these exercises and work through what feels comfortable and tolerated! I would also recommend checking out our Elbow, Wrist and Hand program through the app! bit.ly/tryprehabYT

The stretch isn't really done anymore since it gives way too many false positives. So yes do visit a doc maybe to check it up
if I’m not feeling fatigue during the initial 10-15 reps of eccentric weight exercise should I then start with 20-30?
also is soreness afterwards but not during normal?
You can certainly increase your reps as long as you are not dealing with a significant and limiting amount of muscle soreness following! We use these muscles quite a bit throughout the day so performing increased reps to improve muscle endurance can be helpful!
I looove you!❤ feels so good!
this really helped!
Thanks much. 👏 awesome big help. God bless you.
Wow, great video! I just developed texting thumbs. All your stretches really helped. The Finkelstein stretch was brutal, but I adjusted it as you stated and doing it very gently and not at a deep angle.
That is perfect! That is an intense stretch so yes keep working through what feels comfortable and tolerated! You've got this!
Great info! My thumb doesn’t want to move up - I’m unable to do the “thumbs up” gesture. What can help?
Start with gentle movement and work through what range your body has to offer! You've got this!
That popping is usually do to inflammation. Don’t force the popping.
Awesome Explaination 👍
Question- should the elbow be lifting off the arm rest or should it remain braced against the arm of the sofa?
Angela, good question! Try to keep the elbow down as best you can to target the specific muscles involved!
Wow! Thank you really helpful video
So glad you liked it! Thanks for the kind words!
Finally! A use for that can of spaghettios that has been in the pantry for 12 years. I’m certainly not going to eat them!
We do love a good bowl of Spaghetti O's 👀

Try these exercises and work through what feels comfortable and tolerated! I would also recommend checking out our Elbow, Wrist and Hand program through the app! bit.ly/tryprehabYT
kinda weird when u dun even described the symptom to determine if one has Texter's thumb or could be due to other issues
Thanks so much for this video!! Been having thumb issues. Totally following your exercises and they're helping!
Yay so glad that you are feeling better! Keep up with it!

Does a thumb brace or splint help for at night sleeping
It can and if it offers some relief to allow you to sleep better it can be beneficial.
Thanks a lot🙏
Do I do all of the stretches and exercizes right from the start? Or do I build up to adding a new one every couple of days?
I had operation on my trigger finger still numb but better tq for exercises
