  • Coilover shock absorber is a suspension device in which coil is mounted over the damper/shock absorber. It allows to adjust the Ride height , camber & damping of the vehicle. While designing the coilovers , many factors are considered such as, wheel rate, spring rate, installation ratio/motion ratio ,ride rate , tire rate etc. In this video i will be covering each of these parameters for designing coil springs and calculations for dampers.
    In this video you will learn:-
    1)What is coilover shock absorber?
    2)Damping calculations & Designing of coil spring
    3)How to determine mounting points of coilovers?
    4) Spring rate, wheel rate , Ride rate ?
    5) What is installation / Motion ratio ?

    This video gets the information across quickly if you're in a rush cramming or just need a refresher. If you're lost, you can always slow the video down or skip back and repeat. Every lecture video on the internet should be like this. Other youtube tutors - take notes!

    I would recommend having the damping ratio closer to 1/sqrt(2) = 0.707, having it slightly underdamped than having it at 1 which is critically damped if you want a suspension that is more responsive. Under critical damping, it takes too long for the mass to return to the equilibrium position. Having it damped, as I recommend, means that it will reach equilibrium in about one half the time and will only overshoot the equilibrium position by a slight amount(greatly reduced amplitude). Damping it this way also minimizes the residual elastic potential energy(a minimization integral) under the arches of the train of oscillations. Look into the details of engineering optimal control theory for a further explanation.

    The concept and procedure to be followed in designing a suspension system is clearly explained n well understood. But I'm having problem in considering right values and units, so it would be really great help if you could explain it considering an example with values.

    Question: When calculating for spring rate, how do you account for wheel travel? I want to ensure that my wheels are able maintain a clearance with the fender well during full compression. Since I am modifying my own car and NOT creating a car, I am unable to adjust the top mounting point.

    I wantvto build a tubevframe golf cart/off road buggy. Electric. Not gas.
    I want the smoothest riding buggy possible.
    What type of front and rear suspension do you recommend

    • @thevatsaljain
      @thevatsaljain  8 місяців тому

      For the smoothest ride on your electric off-road buggy, consider an independent suspension system for both the front and rear. Double wishbone or A-arm setup for front suspension, providing better control and stability. For the rear, an independent rear suspension (IRS) or a well-designed trailing arm system can enhance ride comfort.

Specifications like diameter , length no of coils like that. How should I consider for design? If any one know please comment here.

    How to find the tyre rate from the tyre specifications

    • @thevatsaljain
      @thevatsaljain  3 роки тому

      You can calculate Static tire rate using tire specification sheet, which basically gives you unloaded diameter of tire, static load diameter and maximum load rating. Using these values you can calculate tire rate.

    • @thevatsaljain
      @thevatsaljain  3 роки тому

      Tire rate can be found from tire data. Tire manufacturers gives :- Static loaded and unloaded radius or diameter with maximum load rating. So static tire rate can be calculated as K(t) = Load/deflection. Also note that tire rate is effected mostly by tire air pressure inside.

      @@thevatsaljain I have not seen this tire data on a manufacturer’s specification sheet. They provide the load rating, as well as the tire diameter (unloaded, I believe), but not the loaded tire diameter at the load rating. Also, if this information WAS obtained, and the tire load is a percentage of the total load rating, is it a linear change in tire rating for an applied weight that is less than the total load rating? For example, a tire I’m looking at (235/40R17) shows the following specs:
      LOAD I.D.
      SL
      UTQG RATING
      300/AA/A
      UNIT WEIGHT

      8.0-9.5
      OVERALL WIDTH
      (INCHES)
      9.5
      OVERALL DIAMETER
      (INCHES)
      24.4
      TREAD WIDTH
      (INCHES)
      8.2
      TREAD DEPTH
      10
      STATIC RADIUS
