Correction at about 6:30 : The Little Mermaid was actually the first movie in the period of Disney movies often referred to as the Disney Renaissance (circa 1990s).
“What if there was a past between Ursula and King Triton? I would love to read that sort of stuff.” Well, Ursula is Triton’s little sister and Triton banished Ursula from the palace, so I assume there’s a pretty tumultuous past. Mention of the relation was dropped from the movie script but apparently still exists in reference material and other stories.
I thought you might be interested in the different eras of Disney animation, so here you go! 1923-1928: The silent era 1937-1942 The Golden Age, 1943-1949 The Wartime Era, 1950-1959 The Silver Age, 1970-1988 The Bronze Age, The Disney Renaissance 1989-1999, Post Renaissance Era 2000-2009, The Revival Era 2010-Present
So glad you enjoyed it! In the original fairy tale, the little mermaid made the trade for her voice (and constant, stabbing pain every time she took a step!) because her voice was the most precious thing she owned, so she had to give it up for her desire. Also, the reason its a kiss (at least in this movie) is because the little mermaid wanted to become human and have a human soul (merpeople had long lives, then turned into foam when they died). If the prince truly loved her, part of his soul would flow into her through the kiss to create a new soul. Unfortunately, the fairy tale didn't end NEARLY as happy as this. Ursula did want her to fail; but when you think about it, it actually worked in Ariel's favor. Eric fell in love with who she was (yes, three days is incredibly fast but they couldn't do the MONTHS that was the original story) as opposed to simply marrying her because of her voice. Not only that, Ursula tells Ariel upfront what would happen if she failed, and even showed her what happened to those that couldn't pay the price. In the original screenplay, Ursula is Triton's sister and her design was a lionfish. Sorry for the long geeking out; this was one of my favorites growing up!
This was Actually the START of the Disney Renaissance. The movies before this were pretty much junk between Walt Disney's death (The Jungle Book was the Last film Walt himself was involved with) and The Little Mermaid. 17:15 Yes, he impaled her. It's a FAMILY picture!
Ariel can still WRITE. We SAW her sign her name to the contract. She could just draw in the sand "I SAVED YOU & I LOVE YOU"- screw three days; she could've solved everything in like TEN MINUTES.
This film literally saved Disney Animation Studios. The entire company was about to be sold off. They were breaking it all up and auctioning it. The animation studios themselves were already being sold. They animated this from trailers in the parking lot. This movie saved the company and sparked Disney's "Golden Age" of animation.
I was 4 years old when I watched The Little Mermaid for the first time. It’s my favorite Disney movie and Ariel really has a special place in my heart ❤️
This was so much fun to see! I knew all of these songs when I was a kid, and prince Eric is the best simply because he cared so much about his dog. Also, I miss Billy in the background, but that shirt is lovely!
Producer Jeffery Katzenberg ordered "Part of your World" to be cut after a test screening where he observed children dropping popcorn and becoming restless. He felt the song was too long and didn't connect with the audience. Lyricist Howard Ashman said "over my dead body," and went through a long battle to keep the song in the film.
In the Broadway musical version of this, Ursula and Triton do have a history together! According to that show they’re siblings, and their father gave each of them control of half the ocean plus one of his magical items. Triton got the trident while Ursula got the magic shell. And they each ruled over half the ocean until Triton figured out how evil Ursula was (pretty sure she was actively eating some of her subjects) and banished her. This was supposed to be in the movie as well but ended up being cut. (But you should actually check out the musical because there’s some really good additional songs, plus name one other show where you can see half the cast in Heelys.) Also third movie explains what happened to Ariel’s mother and why Triton hates humans. Basically she was crushed to death between a ship and some rocks, and Triton has resented humans ever since for causing her death.
Such a good movie and one of my favorites I would recommend watching the prequel movie Ariel’s beginning as well as the sequel return to the sea both are also really good
Disney actually does put Easter eggs in most of their original films. At the beginning of the Little Mermaid during the concert scene, you can visibly see Mickey and Goofy.
Actually, Part of your World was Disney’s Let it Go back in the day. Originally there was going to be a history between Triton and Ursula; they were going to be siblings but Disney scraped the idea. However, the idea did end up in the Broadway version. And OMG! You really need to watch Beauty and the Beast!
4:10 Okay, now I’m picturing the game like another stupid ad: Shiver Me Timbers - can you (a pirate) collect all the treasure and escape? (Shows Pac Man setup with plank flooring that turns into water when the shark chomps it, sinking the treasure on the tile and creating a hazard.)
I'm actually kinda surprised you've never seen this movie before! It's absolutely amazing and the effects are super stunning!😊 I personally love Ariel's singing voice, don't you?💖 Her father, King Tritan, is really overprotective of her, cause he just doesn't wanna lose her.🥺 When she cries, it's like musical breeze drifting though the sea. I think that sounds really weird, but anyway! How about next, you do Aladdin, if you're doing older Disney Princess movies?🌸 Hope you're having an awesome day and Plus Ultra!❤️
I love your first reactions on the movies. Can't wait to see you reacting to Beauty and the Beast. It is my favorite from the Disney Renaissance since I played Belle in a small production in our town.
I've always loved this film. I also love how Ursula as Vanessa is a homage to Feathertop(the scarecrow that wishes to be human and he has a spell where he does become human but its an illusion).
i basically say this to every movie reactor that watches the little mermaid whether it's their first time or not, just to please react to the second movie, it's so good ;-; please movies in depth, please make my disney wish come true ;-;
Not enough people appreciate the fact that prince Eric freaking KILLED A VILLAIN ONSCREEN in this movie!! And, like, not a nice, clean way either, like pushing her off a cliff or something - no, he stabbed her through gut! This movie really doesn't get enough credit.
Actually the only Disney Princess movie I watched as a kid. Eric always stayes my fave prince because of that 😄 #arielle Ps: in germany the movie is called 'arielle, the mermaid' instead of "the little mermaid"
I think people overestimate what Ariel should be like in knowing who she should trust but she's 16 and I remember being that age. Especially having traditional parents I'd listen to just about anyone because of the need to be accepted or listened to.
In the original movie script, apparently, we got the backstory of Ursula and King Triton. It was dropped from the movie but made its way into the broadway musical (check out Ursula’s song “I Want The Good Times Back” from the play). Basically, they were brother and sister, each ruling half of the Oceanic Realm, but then Triton banished Ursula for her wicked misrule and consolidated the kingdoms under his own imperial rule as benevolent dictator or god king or whatever his title is.
This movie came out a week before I was born and my beach loving Cali Girl mother just installed in me a love of mermaids. To this day it’s still my favorite. Or as I call it “My Princess Movie”
Favourite Disney movie although I still wonder how it would have been if they’d gotten their original want to voice Ursula .. they wanted Bea Arthur ( Dorothy Golden Girls ) to voice her 😁
Your commentaries just make this so much better! The amount of times that I've laughed out loud watching this is insane!😂😂 TLM will forever be my favourite disney movie to date!
I have a top 5 animated Disney movie list, and this is definitely one of them. I remember going to the theater to see this with my family at 16. I was a bit skeptical of whether I'd like it because I already knew the tragic real Hans Christian Anderson's fable behind The Little Mermaid. It was very dark and tragic. For those who don't know....she did give up her voice. The prince thought one of the missionary nuns on the beach that day, had rescued him. He did marry her instead of Ariel. Her sisters wanted her to come home, so they went to the witch and made a deal. They had to give up their arms to get a dagger that Ariel must use to kill the Prince on his wedding night in order to come home as a mermaid again. If she didn't do it before that evening was up, she would turn into sea foam and die. Well....she was about to do it while they were sleeping on their wedding night, but she saw his sleeping face in the moonlight and couldn't bring herself to do it, because she still loved him. She dropped the dagger. Jumped into the ocean and turned into sea foam. I'm sure you've already deducted why they never showed a mother for the girls, and why their dad was so overprotective of his girls going to the surface. After all, this is a Disney movie. Divorce isn't an option, so that leaves.... There are two more, straight to video, movies on Ariel's story. I never saw the last one, but I got the gist of what it's supposed to be about. Prince Eric is definitely my favorite prince. He proved that he could love her in spite of them coming from 2 different worlds. He was out of his league dealing with Ursula, but went to fight for his love, anyways. He was attracted to her heroism of rescuing him, and her voice...willing to marry her without ever seeing her. He completely respected her by not trying to kiss her, when he didn't even know her first name. Respect!
Oh, yeah. That moment, when Disney still wasn't able to show original tale's ending (thanks God!), but had just enough balls to make literal crossover with "The Call of Chtulhu" instead.
I love that you are enjoying the Disney Princess movies. I recently found you in my recommended feed cause I’ve been watching a bunch of movie reacts this year, especially from BillyBinger. I don’t know if you’ve watched it yet, but considering I know you already like magical and fantasy, I highly suggest Stardust. You’d be surprised of the star celebrities in it. 😊 And there’s a lot of contextual clues to keep your ears/eyes on.
There actually is a book detailing the past of Ursula and Triton. It was supposed to be part of the movie. But the scrapped it to save time. Also Ursula is way more powerful than what they just showed from the movie
Ariel wore MY wedding dress! That was the exact same stylie I wore 4 years after the movie came out, and I didn't realize that until years after my wedding
This movie came out in 1989 when I was born and disney movies were suffering with black cauldron this was a hit or miss with Disney and if it was a miss then there probably wouldn’t be Beauty and the Beast and the beginning of Disney renaissance but it was a HUGE hit!
And now read Poor Unfortunate Soul: A Tale of the Sea Witch (Villains, 3) were we get Ursulas Story.. (pretty sad) also the Theory that Ursula, Triton and Ariel are related. In the musical, Ursula and Triton are shown as siblings and children of the former king of Atlantika.
It's funny that you bring up "Under the Sea" being the "Let It Go" of this era. Technically, this era DID have a "Let It Go" parallel. It was "Part of Your World." I strongly recommend looking into the history of this film. This movie literally saved Disney's animation department. No Mermaid, no Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Lion King, FROZEN.

Like the 7 seas.🌊🌈 10:29 - 10:34 Because True Love's Kiss can break any curse."Once Upon a Time"dixit.(And also because if it was just a regular kiss it would be far too easy to obtain!;-P) 15:18 - 15:24 Well...no,because that's a totally different way of swimming.1st of all she needs to catch her breath and she never had to do that as a mermaid,2nd of all..have you ever tried to swim with fins? It's *not at all the same* as swimming without them! You need to get used to them!Same when you go from swimming with a fin your entire life and you're then suddenly stuck with human feet.Also..think about walking in heels. You're still on the ground and you're still walking, but this doesn't mean that it will immediately be as easy as walking with normal shoes.
This movie came out 4 years after I was born, and I was born in 85 so it's not that old. lol I'd say Disney started improving when Sleeping Beauty came out. That is amazing animation.
Fun Facts: > Ursula and her sister Morgana (the villain of The Little Mermaid 2: Return to the Sea) are voiced by the same actress Pat Carol. > Ursula and Morgana are Cecaelias (mythical creatures that are half human half octopus); although in The Little Mermaid The Series, they’re called Octopids. > Ursula and Triton are brother and sister and children of Posiedon the Greek god of the seas. > In the licensed version of The Little Mermaid the musical, it’s explained that Ursula was the youngest of seven daughters like Ariel. Although she was lonely and unloved by her father Posiedon. He gave her the magic shell to try to buy her love. She used dark sea magic to kill her older sisters to be the favorite. When her father didn’t acknowledge his love for her, she killed him to rule the seas. When Triton (who was the youngest child and only son) became of age, he regained control of the seas, the throne and the trident from her. For punishment she was banished. In the final battle, it’s revealed that Ursula killed Queen Athena, Ariel’s mother and King Triton’s wife. He thought humans killed her and was shocked at this revelation. > In the Descendants franchise, Ursula has a daughter named Uma played by China Anne McLain as you know. > Therefore considering their family tree, Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades are brothers. Hercules is the son of Zeus. King Triton and Ursula are the children of Poseidon. Therefore Hercules is their cousin. And Ariel and her sisters are his second cousins. And then descendants three we know that Mal is the daughter of Hades and Uma is the daughter of Ursula. So that makes them second cousins to Ariel, third cousins to Hercules, and that makes them technically cousins.

I have to agree about the prequel. The sequel is better in my opinion. I’m a sucker for sequels that follow through with a growing family.
So, it was Auntie Ursula???
♥️♥️
This was so much fun to see! I knew all of these songs when I was a kid, and prince Eric is the best simply because he cared so much about his dog.
Also, I miss Billy in the background, but that shirt is lovely!
Billy’s still around!! Just waiting to return for a special video next year 🤫
Poor unfortunate souls is one of my all time favourite Disney songs! I’m excited for the remake
“Poor Unfortunate Souls” may be Disney’s best villain song. “Mad Madam Mim” is a close 2nd for me.
RIP Will Ryan, aka the Seahorse.
A real voice acting legend. 💔
It didn’t connect with children but every adult felt something
In the Broadway musical version of this, Ursula and Triton do have a history together! According to that show they’re siblings, and their father gave each of them control of half the ocean plus one of his magical items. Triton got the trident while Ursula got the magic shell. And they each ruled over half the ocean until Triton figured out how evil Ursula was (pretty sure she was actively eating some of her subjects) and banished her. This was supposed to be in the movie as well but ended up being cut. (But you should actually check out the musical because there’s some really good additional songs, plus name one other show where you can see half the cast in Heelys.)
Also third movie explains what happened to Ariel’s mother and why Triton hates humans. Basically she was crushed to death between a ship and some rocks, and Triton has resented humans ever since for causing her death.
Such a good movie and one of my favorites I would recommend watching the prequel movie Ariel’s beginning as well as the sequel return to the sea both are also really good
I loved Athena 😭
Anger management problem?
Are you telling a crab to not be.....
crabby? 😄 *Muttley laughing*
Lmao
Disney actually does put Easter eggs in most of their original films. At the beginning of the Little Mermaid during the concert scene, you can visibly see Mickey and Goofy.
Not him and Dylan struggling to not make comments about Ursula 🤣
8:00 - in deleted scenes it's implied that Ursula may have been Triton's sister.
This movie has a special place in my nostalgia heart
I absolutely loved listening to Under the Sea every single second. Except back then we couldn't just repeat. We had to rewind the cassette tape first.
You should react to "Strange Magic" from Lucasflim, it's a musical meets a magical romantic comedy about Fairies.
yessss!!!
I LOVE that movie 🙌🏼
I loved that movie! I was so upset it took me so long to find it
4:10 Okay, now I’m picturing the game like another stupid ad: Shiver Me Timbers - can you (a pirate) collect all the treasure and escape? (Shows Pac Man setup with plank flooring that turns into water when the shark chomps it, sinking the treasure on the tile and creating a hazard.)
This and aladdin are my two favorite animated disney movies. Great reaction.
Haven't noticed anyone else mention this - Chef Louis was voiced by Rene Auberjonois, who played Odo on Star Trek: Deep Space 9.
"Homeward Bound" - you would have so much fun with this movie!
I'm actually kinda surprised you've never seen this movie before!
It's absolutely amazing and the effects are super stunning!😊
I personally love Ariel's singing voice, don't you?💖
Her father, King Tritan, is really overprotective of her, cause he just doesn't wanna lose her.🥺
When she cries, it's like musical breeze drifting though the sea. I think that sounds really weird, but anyway! How about next, you do Aladdin, if you're doing older Disney Princess movies?🌸
Hope you're having an awesome day and Plus Ultra!❤️
I love your first reactions on the movies. Can't wait to see you reacting to Beauty and the Beast. It is my favorite from the Disney Renaissance since I played Belle in a small production in our town.
Love that♥️♥️♥️
I've always loved this film. I also love how Ursula as Vanessa is a homage to Feathertop(the scarecrow that wishes to be human and he has a spell where he does become human but its an illusion).
i basically say this to every movie reactor that watches the little mermaid whether it's their first time or not, just to please react to the second movie, it's so good ;-; please movies in depth, please make my disney wish come true ;-;
The second movie is so underrated. People dislike it for the plot being the opposite of the original but it's so nice.
@@fidelianerina i knoooow! it's so saad
11:05 it needs to be a contractual thing, she needs something to hold over Triton because he's a lot more powerful than her.
This was based on a Hans Christian Andersen story.
They changed the ending pretty drastically.
-And yes, you HAVE to see Beauty and the Beast
Not enough people appreciate the fact that prince Eric freaking KILLED A VILLAIN ONSCREEN in this movie!! And, like, not a nice, clean way either, like pushing her off a cliff or something - no, he stabbed her through gut! This movie really doesn't get enough credit.
Actually the only Disney Princess movie I watched as a kid. Eric always stayes my fave prince because of that 😄
#arielle
Ps: in germany the movie is called 'arielle, the mermaid' instead of "the little mermaid"
Harpoon for life
The actress who voices Ariel was in enchanted
You should react to Anastasia. It's sooooooo beautiful, I cant't say it more often. The animation, the story, the music! Just perfect!
The guy who voiced Grimsby also Voiced Roger Radcliffe in 101 Dalmatians, The original in 1961.
So excited to watch this!
Will you be watching the third one on your channel? If not you should check it out on your own time
@@marzh5278 I am watching it on the channel!
@@nickflix8657 can't wait!!
Love your channel
Legend
You should see the second one. Ursula had a sister played by the same voice actor Pat Carroll
"He's gonna impale her? I did not see that coming!"
Me: "Neither did she!"
Lol
Such a classic!!
This movie began the Disney Renaissance era. The best movies made in my opinion.
Love your reaction!! 🤗❤️
Yep. Prince Eric is a badass.
FACTS
I think people overestimate what Ariel should be like in knowing who she should trust but she's 16 and I remember being that age. Especially having traditional parents I'd listen to just about anyone because of the need to be accepted or listened to.
Traditional in the sense of religious and non accepting
For a movie that came out in 1989, the animation is actually pretty impressive
Favourite Disney movie although I still wonder how it would have been if they’d gotten their original want to voice Ursula .. they wanted Bea Arthur ( Dorothy Golden Girls ) to voice her 😁
tangled gotta be one of the faves! but so hard to pick ~
That's how I was until Moana came out and now I can't pick between Moana and Raya lol
Tangled is it’s own whole moment
I love this one!! Prince Eric is my favourite because he saved Max .... :) ... also Ariel .... one of the biggest [human] fangirls of all time lol
There's a live-action version of this movie coming soon with Hailee Bailey as Ariel
I suspect most of Ursula's magic that involves other people only works with their consent, which is why she goes so hard with the tricky contracts.
15:31 Also, this is funny considering your first reaction to Wolfie in your Until Dawn playthrough lol
……… oh dear god
There actually is a book detailing the past of Ursula and Triton. It was supposed to be part of the movie. But the scrapped it to save time. Also Ursula is way more powerful than what they just showed from the movie
This is my ultimate favorite Disney movie :) king triton 🧜♂️ what a daddy! 😂
YAS
I am so excited that you’re finally getting to see this. I really love this movie.
02:43 - 02:49 7. Like the 7 seas.🌊🌈
10:29 - 10:34 Because True Love's Kiss can break any curse."Once Upon a Time"dixit.(And also because if it was just a regular kiss it would be far too easy to obtain!;-P)
15:18 - 15:24 Well...no,because that's a totally different way of swimming.1st of all she needs to catch her breath and she never had to do that as a mermaid,2nd of all..have you ever tried to swim with fins? It's *not at all the same* as swimming without them! You need to get used to them!Same when you go from swimming with a fin your entire life and you're then suddenly stuck with human feet.Also..think about walking in heels. You're still on the ground and you're still walking, but this doesn't mean that it will immediately be as easy as walking with normal shoes.
This movie came out 4 years after I was born, and I was born in 85 so it's not that old. lol I'd say Disney started improving when Sleeping Beauty came out. That is amazing animation.
Me too!! I saw this with my grandma when I was 4
r.i.p to the voice actor of the seahorse. he passed away yesterday. he also played petrie in land before time.
♥️♥️♥️
Fun Facts:
> Ursula and her sister Morgana (the villain of The Little Mermaid 2: Return to the Sea) are voiced by the same actress Pat Carol.
9:31
Ariel: god damn it dad this is why I keep you out of my room because you’re always breaking my shit in rage
WATCH BEAUTY AND THE BEAST!! The animation is gorgeous and the music is exquisite! Its my favorite
😉
Most villians add the part of true loves kiss because they dont believe its real.
16:56
This was the one moment in a Disney movie that scared me so much, I couldn’t watch it as a kid!
😱
Movies in depth when ursula appears: this is a childrens film, this is a childrens film, this is a childrens filn
Also movies in depth: King triton is dummy thick
🤫🤫🤫🤫
Ursala is Airel's aunt and Her father's sister. And honestly, I read that in some Disney books. But however, the girls all shard one mother. You find more about that in Airel's beginning. try checking out the other little mermaid movies.
Under the sea was my version of let it go from frozen I used to sing it all the time I was born the year little mermaid came out in 1989
Great video! My favorite animated Disney movies are Fox and the Hound, Snow White, Brother Bear And Alice in Wonderland
fun fact the seven daughters represent the 7 seas and ariel as the only redhead is the red sea
You need to see Disney’s The Great Mouse Detective!
😎
Criminally underrated!!!
Was anyone else sitting here listen to movies in depth keep saying “it’s a kids movie, it’s a kids movie” which looking at ursulas “curvature” and also thinking that didn’t stop Dylan is in trouble lol
Many reasons I love this movie the most and my fave princess Ariel the mermaid and prince Eric the best prince.
You should also watch the sequel and the prequel. The prequel explains what happened to the mom
*MiD at **16:40**:* And to think I liked you Ursula - secretly!
*Audience:* boy you ain't slick
