  • Ramazzotti and Averna are very popular classic amaro that are easy to drink, not too sweet and not too bitter, great in cocktails and totally worth having. They work great in a Black Manhattan, and are very tasty on their own.
Today I'm going to compare and contrast.
    Cheers!

This was exactly the comparison I was looking for, thanks! Wanting to buy my first amaro and was between these two.

Ramazzotti is definitely a favorite of mine. Refreshing on the rocks with a slice of orange and soda. Absolutely delicious and a change from Compari and Aperol. Love Amari! 🥃

I've had ramazotti once, but never averna. I made my first black Manhattan last night with a bottle of nonino instead of the averna. I loved it!
Any clue how much different the averna would be?

Averna is cheaper than Nonino, and Nonino is made with grappa, and is more floral, and sweet Averna has more cola, and bitter notes, would make a less sweet black manhattan. If you like Nonino, get Averna for sure, its awesome.

Ramazzotti and Averna are both excellent Amari. Ramazzotti does have a strong cola or cola-like note, like you said. It reminds me of Dr. Pepper a little but, like a flat, bitter Dr. Pepper but in a good way. Have you tried Meletti? It's another one of those middle of the road sort of gateway Amari and it also has a cola note to it.

I have had Meletti, but I don't have it right now, I will have to put that on the list for a future video. I agree its right in the same zone as these two.

Amaro is such a blind spot for me. I enjoy it but I don’t venture too far into the deep end of the pool. I have 3-4 of the most popular ones like Averna.

I like them both very well, perhaps with a slight preference for Averna. A year ago I discovered the "Montenegro" in Bologna, more on the fruity and sweet side. It seems to be one of the most popular Amari in Italy. Surprisingly, it is hardly known in Switzerland. ps: A lil secret: two thirds Amaro (Averna), one third creme de menthe, on the rocks. And you have a wonderful "Doctor Henderson". He cures hangovers in minutes.

Oh yeah Montenegro is great. Sweet and flowery, like rose petals. I got a video about that too. Dr Henderson sounds like good medicine!
      Cheers!

So interesting - I feel like I find ramazotti to be quite a bit bitterer than averna - or at least kind of more like medicinal or something? In a way that I love to be clear - ramazotti is one of my favorites, kind of *because* it feels like it has more kick to it. Avernas fine, but I feel like it's too sweet for me. Love to hear/think about how other people perceive taste though, feels like there is so much divergence!

Everybody has a different palate so people often have different ideas. I find these both to be delicious in their own way, but with different flavors. Cheers!

I went to a “fancy, curated” liquor store today to get some rhum Agricole and got a bottle of averna- the two amari were next to each other and I flipped a coin to pick. I also needed a new bottle of ginger liqueur and they didn’t carry the domaine de canton I am used to so I got some from New Deal Distillery in your neck of the woods, which I hope is good (I should have asked about it, I had already chatted to them about the rum though, and was tired.

I haven't tried the New Deal Ginger, mostly because I started making my own ginger liqueur, but I like their stuff generally, so It is probably good.

My favourite is Averna, but I like them both. For me, Ramazotti doesn't work really well in a Black Manhattan. A matter of taste, of course. A BM with Averna and Rittenhouse Rye is simply incredible.
The nice thing is also that both Averna and Ramazotti are widely available here in Switzerland.

    • @UnclePete

Ramazzotti is a product of north-Italian culture, I think it's a bit over-engineered. Averna is cheerful country style.
