- I stumbled across Kingsford Garlic, Onion, Paprika & Hickory Wood flavored charcoal briquets at The Home Depot. I bought a bag which I used to cook Hot & Fast Chicken on my Weber Smokey Mountain Cooker for WSM Smoke Day 18 on May 28, 2022. Did it improve my chicken? Watch to find out!

Well done. I recently grabbed a bag of the Basil Sage Thyme briquettes and I'll do a cook sometime soon. I'm going to use two kettles instead of my WSM'S. My plan is to cut a chicken in half. Place each half in different kettles, one with the BST briquettes. The other kettle with the standard blue bag and see what difference there is. And I believe you are correct in keeping the chicken simple. Probably just some salt and pepper. I'm in the process of finally doing video for my first content next week. Hopefully the filming of this new product will be good enough that I'll be able to post it in a few weeks. Until then, you have a great day 🌤 😊.
Thank you for the review. I had seen this at Lowes and I thought it seemed interesting. I questioned how much flavor it would impart on my food.
That meat church is some good stuff
Thanks for sharing. I saw these bags at Lowes in the clearance area for 1.99 Now I know why.
From "Cook's Country" magazine June/July 2023, in the article "All About Charcoal" page 43: "Can Flavored Briquettes Spice Up Your Cookout?"
We tested Kingsford's new flavored briquettes, which claim to add the taste of herbs and aromatics to your food. Unfortunately, they cost more that regular briquettes and did nothing. Grilled chicken tasted like grilled chicken; any flavors must have gone up in all that smoke. For a flavor boost, we'll stick to our favorite rubs, marinades, and glazes."
It's $3.50 for 12lbs now I think I'd just buy it cuz it's cheaper than regular 😂
Maybe a longer smoke would show a little more. Also did it burn off quickly where it was already 80% gone by the time the regular briquettes were ready.
I usually put my spices and seasonings on the food, and go to lengths to keep it from burning.
Does burnt onion, garlic, and paprika taste good?
While they didn't enhance the flavor of the chicken as far as I could tell, they didn't do any harm, either.
Thanks for the review. Personally, not a Kingsford fan (i know its sac-ra-lig) but I just don't and won't use it. I can't imagine the little pucks creating much flavor? Seems very gimicky to me. Everyone wants to re-invent the wheel, when it comes to traditions & cultures, especially in BBQ. I guess I'm more of a old school purest and I like to keep things simple. (Wood, fire, meat) I do like your hot and fast method for doing the chicken though! Looked beautiful, juicy and delicious! Will give that a try soon. Thanks Chris.
Well done..however...the bag of the garlic, onion paprika that I purchased was only these briquettes, nothing else in the bag, or I should say, no regular charcoal was in the bag, I found it worked best only using these as a flavor enhancer like you would with a chunk of apple or cherry wood, and only put 2 briquettes on my hot coals...3 was a bit too much, however I have seen others light up the entire bag instead of regular coals...I should also note that I bought the other flavors as well, and again, these bags were these coals only, not mixed with regular Kingsford...maybe I'm confused
I checked the Kingsford website, they also sell a smaller bag of just the Flavor Boosters that you add to your own charcoal--that's what you bought.
youre better off putting the seasoning on the chicken
It's H. E. B. not Heeeb
Thank you for the education! As you may or may not know, I come from a land far away from H.E.B. :D
