    I'm kind of late to the game, but I'm trying to up my skills from just grilling burgers and dogs. Always used Kingsford for grilling & slow and low (because it's easy available) now that I'm getting into smoking it's time for a bag of B&B. Great comparison of each aspect of different charcoal brands, answered a lot of questions I had. Thanks for posting!

    I was not at all surprised by your results. My brother grabbed a bag of B&B while we were vacationing. I use up bags of Kingsford blue bag every month, mostly due to the cheap price at local big box. That B&B floored me. The temps were crazy consistent and the duration was much more than I had been accustomed to. The premium price is easy to justify for the increase in performance.

      Hello Rob. Yes, B&B is really a quality product. I do buy B&B when everything is regular priced... but when kingsfords goes on sale at the big box store it is SO hard to not load up with half a pallet in the truck! Take care and thanks for coming by.

    This was a great comparison video. I used up all of my Weber briquettes so now I’m looking for a replacement. I’m tired of using Kingsford. Mostly because of the lower temps and the amount of ash afterwards. It would have been interesting to see the amount of ash under each chimney afterwards. Good video, I enjoyed it. Thanks.

      @Viewtoagrill  3 роки тому +6

    I'd like to try B & B- looks promising. The challenge for me is that where I live in Dallas, you can get Kingsford in almost any store including hardware stores- so easy to purchase. Kingsford is half the money of B & B. Thanks Johnny!

    I’ve used all of these (except Embers) over the years. Cost is a consideration. If I’m grilling something quick, like steaks or burgers, I’ll go with Kingsford or Royal Oak. If I’m cooking low and slow, I’ll use B&B because those larger briquettes last longer and maintain heat better. I also think they have slightly better flavor.
    Good comparison. Thanks!!

    Nice video, I liked the comparison. Been using B&B for a while now and I think it's great, burns hot, clean, and lasts a long time, and didn't leave much ash behind. I used to use both Royal Oak and Kingsford a good bit. Royal Oak always burned dirty and would give me some off flavors. I also had way more ash at the end compared to other brands. Kingsford I think is ok, pretty consistent and burns a long time, but doesn't get as hot as other brands. B&B is definitely my favorite.

    Thanks for your comparison. I wished I would have seen it before I bought 160 lbs of Embers last weekend bc it was 6 bucks cheaper for each twin pack of 20 lbs than Kingfords twin pack of the same size. Being that I still have about 120 lbs of Kingsford sitting in my basement I went wild and bought the Embers. Well this weekend I tried Embers charcoal for the firs time, and true to the cliche, you get what you pay for. I read some reviewers that stated it was a little harder to start than Kingsford, so being that in my Weber chimney started usually gets the Kingsford coals ready in about ten to 12 minutes with just 2 sheets of newspaper, I doubled the amount I normally use to 4 sheets of newspaper. It still took the Ember's coals over a half hour to get started enough to dump into my grill. I was cooking some chicken indirectly with some apple wood chips on top, and it was really hard to keep the Embers temp high enough to smoke the chicken correct'y because a lot of the coals didn't even stay lit. Never had this trouble with Kinsford, so I learned the hard way. I'll stick with Kingsford from now on. Can't say I ever noticed B&B charcoal around here. Next weekend I'll try to mix the 2 charcoals and try to figure out a ratio that will keep the Embers from giving up.

    • @Viewtoagrill

      The Embers in this video was the last bag of Embers I bought... even when I see it on sale I do not buy it. If you are like me you won't waste the Embers and muscle through it. LOL.. Take care. Great channel Name by the way.

    The scientist/engineer in me suggests two things -
    - Before/After WEIGHT of the charcoal would be much more accurate than the "Burned Ends Lufkin" method. Then we'd have to determine what, if any, effect that weight change had on performance. It's not good practice to simply say "This one's better because it created less ash [or lost less volume]".
    - Be cautious in declaring a "winner". If BnB stays hot longer, that wouldn't be an advantage when cooking burgers or other quick cook items. Likewise caution declaring any particular charcoal as better because it reached a hotter temp. Unless you're cooking pizza, hotter charcoal is probably not "better".
    I suggest familiarity and expectable results are likely the most important aspect of any cooking process.
    Example - Whatever charcoal I use, I know that X amount of charcoal, started Y minutes prior to cook, with the vents open Z amount will give me 350 deg F for at least 120 minutes. If I continue to use that same charcoal, amount, and starting time, I can experiment with time and vent openings to get hotter, cooler, longer, shorter cook scenarios.
    I'm pretty sure I would not be able to tell any difference in taste of chix, burgers, etc if cooked over BnB, Kingsford, Matchlight, Lump vs Briquette etc.
    So all that being said, I simply buy reliable, low cost Kingsford in the blue bag. I've cooked on it for half a century and know what to expect. If I had cooked over some other brand, I'm quite sure I would feel just as confident about it's cooking characteristics.

    I’m in the middle of running and experiment on three charcoals. I may post something pretty generic on my channel. I weighed The most “normal” sized Kingsford, B&B, and the new Jealous Devil Maxxx. Then, I placed them in water and submerged them and weighed the water they displaced. I used this to calculate their density. Kingsford was the most dense, then B&B and then JD Maxxx. My next test, which I will record, is to light each single briquette given the same amount of time and distance from a torch and see how long they burn until they are dust. I have to wait for the briquettes I tested to dry out because dunking them in water soaked them a bit. I didn’t expect Kingsford to be the most dense but as we see in your test B&B obviously burns longer even though less dense. The JD Maxxx is quebracho wood and I would guess it would burn the longest but we’ll see. The test will have to be taken with a grain of salt because the Kingsford is the smallest briquette and it would make sense that it burns less time. I will then calculate a ratio of time burned to size and see which one per unit of volume will be the best given the size it takes up. It’s all a bit ridiculous doing this, but I like doing these types of experiments.

    • @Viewtoagrill
      @Viewtoagrill  4 роки тому +1

    After months of using Royal Oak briquets and B&B briquets, the Royal Oak emits an extreme amount of smoke. I literally have to wave people off who happen to be walking or driving by and tell them my house is not on fire. B&B produces very little smoke and don't have to worry about people getting alarmed. I find the B&B can be difficult to light up, even using those flame starters. Now I put a handful of Royal Oak briquets on the bottom of the chimney starter since RO lights up easier and fill the rest with B&B, that seems to work in getting the B&B to light up. Thoughts?

    Great comparison. I like RO briquettes a lot. However, RO is the primary manufacturer of the majority of private label store brand charcoal briquettes. I have noticed that store brand RO briquettes are not as good as the name brand RO briquettes. Whether it be Home Depot’s Embers, Wal-Mart’s Expert Grill or any other private labeled store brand made by RO. Your tests here prove that name brand RO is better than whatever store brand RO for what ever reason. My experience with it is confirmed. Great test. I will have to give B&B a try.

    It’s easy for me to find B&B at HEB here in South Texas. I usually use B&B oak lump... so cheap at HEB. 10 bucks for almost 20 pounds. I have never really been too impressed with Royal Oak, the packaging is the same but it's no where near as good as basic Kingsford. I wonder if we get the "Embers" grade of their product line bagged as Classic, it looks the exact same as your Embers, very ragged edges and full of pits and voids. I just picked up a bag of Weber briquettes, see how that goes.
