- Eight years after a national ban on skin-whitening products came into force in Ivory Coast, the trend continues to boom despite its health risks. Half of Abidjan's women are known to engage in skin depigmentation, which can lead to serious health issues such as diabetes and hypertension. NGOs are denouncing what they see as a lack of political will from authorities to tackle the problem. FRANCE 24's Julia Guggenheim, Damien Koffi, M'ma Camara and Justice Baidoo report, with Antonia Kerrigan.

0:50 She refers to lightening her son's skin as "cleaning" it and making it beautiful, and says that she simply can't have "clean" (lightened) skin herself while allowing her son's skin to be "dirty" (its natural color). This woman is so lost in the brainwashing.
It is sad and unfortunate 😢
Ban the product plain and simple
It is banned, read the title. Don't be naive, if people want something, they will do every thing to get it.
skin care is okay. but, whitening it? NAH!
there's good reason the evolution has given us humans different biological features.
Yea, I'll pass...
Why do they have to do this to the child the child has their own decision and when they grow up and they see how their skin is uneven or even damaged and have bad acne don't wonder why it wasn't their choice it was their parents and now they're skin in damage😢
Self-racism is so insane, and that this woman says that "every mother wants their child to be pretty", what she is implying is just crazy!
Self racism?! Are you serious? Did you even actually watch the video?
This is not about racism, this is about a health issue.
When I go to the beach to get some colour, am I being "self racist"? When someone with a lighter complexion uses a base to get even lighter, is that person being "self racist"?
Did you watch the video? Did you notice that they said the problem is harmful substances and that there are products that comply with the law and have no problem?
Not everything is about racism. Watch before you comment.
And we have skin tanning beds, creams, lotions, sprays, etc., in the west. 😂
So sad 🤦🏾♂️
Sorry
