    I am practicing yoga not because I want to be better at yoga pose but I want to live better life. At some point of my practice, I was disappointed to myself because I can have a perfectly blissful moment on the mat but soon after I go to the reality, I was back to same suffering in the matter of time. Asana alone was not enough transform myself. I had to change whole mindset and life style.

      This is why we need more teachers that incorporate the yamas and niyamas - that is where we find the guidance that we are really looking for & cant get from asana practice 😄👍

    I found the concept of Aparigraha the most useful in the early stages of my knowledge of yoga. Other people started to think I was going mad when I started to clear out what I considered clutter but what they thought were valuable goods. The result; I have a less cluttered environment while on the other hand they have a cluttered household. Aparigraha has caused my mind to become lighter and my environment cleaner. This lighter mind can now focus more on yoga practice.

      that is one of my favorite concepts in yoga and the choice to move from a 1,400 sq foot condo to a 192 sq. foot tiny house has made such a difference in my life, i feel so much more at ease in a simple environment where I only keep the things that are useful or beautiful to me

    Good job! I think I remember you from Accessible Yoga teachings. So grateful for their lessons.
    In the study of Ahimsa, Laurag illustrates "do no harm" re: treatment of animals. Very solid examples, and if you're for animal rights or think you're not, I think this 16 min 22 sec (16:22) video will give you a baseline.

    I enjoyed the video, it's interesting to see what people interpret these for themselves, which mine was much different… But I think we interpret them to be as we need for ourselves for the time or moment… My nonviolence was more compassion, my non-greed was more gratitude or paying your own dues in earning your keep, my honesty was freedom from the negativity of lying, my correct use of energy was moderation and not to over indulge, And my release of excess and possessions was to free yourself from the weight of excess which seems to have more negative than positive… Would you ask a lot of people who have a lot of wealth which brings a lot of stress… Thanks for the video! So I have a feeling years we have changed but I love them, awesome!

    My theme for the week is your more awesome then awesomenes low and behold you put this tutorial out you truly are more awesome then awesomenes. Dr Butara told me when he left the Yoga life Institute in India the woman that ran the institute said to him when you go back America the most important subject to teach are Yamas and Niyama somewhere some lady in India is so so proud of you And of course me! You have awesomenes​ you are!

    Im coming back with your 8 LIMBS of YOGA bkz it was awesome to learn it with you & also to bring myself to myself.
    Its kind of funny about practicing yoga with ego bkz i have practiced yoga with online instructors or teacher's egos as well...but i decided to shrink until i put myself to where i am called for.

    Its ironic, being an Indian, who grew up in India, did not care to learn yoga, until recently whem we are in lockdown, and can't go outside, I decided to go inwards, and learn Yoga. And quickly, my science trained brain told me to go to the basic, and start from the very core that Sage Patanjali intended to teach us. I did lots of google search and after 100s videos later found your video the most informativein the shortest time. It is BEST video explaining the core in practical way that we can incorporate into our daily lives You really made difference in my life! Thanks for sharing. Also I noticed some orher notes on extreme right to each Yamas. Can you please explain what are those. And do you have a list of actionable items listed anywhere that we can incorporate in our daily practice? Rupam

      Hi Rupam, it is very interesting that you have started your study of yoga at the roots (as it should be), where so many of us study the postures for years before circling back to the philosophy later on. The notes on the side of the board are things that can be pulled into your practice when studying each yama:( like a heart focused meditation for ahimsa)- i have some practice videos working through those themes. I also recommend the book "Yamas & Niyamas" by deborah adele: in each section she gives you 3 tasks to explore your relationship to the yama/niyama being studied. I am so glad that my videos are helping you on this journey- these concepts are especially useful in times like this- be well 😊

    It's interesting how there are other components to yoga that should technically come first before asana, but nope! Not here in the west, haha.

      That is how i learned and mostly everyone i know came to asana first & some continue to seek out more, others are content with just asana, but a yoga teacher should make an effort to show students all limbs & why they are pieces of the whole system

      In Traditional Hatha Yoga (ie: the Hatha Yoga Pradipika), Asana does come first. The system described above is Patanjali's 8-Limbed system.

    I agree with your explanation of Brahmacharya, it is how I understood it to be. Also, in my opinion, a person who is not interested in Brahmacharya is not being serious about yoga practice. Yoga has a higher goal to offer.

      Brahmacharya is a tricky one sometimes for people to grasp, but i see it as very important. Everything is energy and it is essential to our health on all levels that we are intentional with where we put our energy- in the form of time, sex, money, our work...it is all the way we manage our energy

    India is one of the top exporters of beef. 😢
    We regard the cow as one of our 7 Mothers. A symbol of tolerance and compassion. Mother Earth personified.
    Seven mothers in Vedanta.
    1. One's own biological mother
    2. Wife of a guru
    3. Wife of a priest
    4. Wife of a King
    5. A nurse
    6. Mother Earth
    7. Mother Cow.
    How times have changed in modern India today. 😥

    WHAT IS SPECIAL ABOUT BEING A HINDU?

    1) Believe in God ! - Aastik - Accepted
    2) Don't believe in God ! - You're accepted as Nastik
    3) You want to worship idols - please go ahead. You are a murti pujak.
    4) You dont want to worship idols - no problem. You can focus on Nirguna Brahman.
    5) You want to criticise something in our religion. Come forward. We are logical. Nyaya, Tarka etc. are core Hindu schools.
    6) You want to accept beliefs as it is. Most welcome. Please go ahead with it.
    7) You want to start your journey by reading Bhagvad Gita - Sure !
    8) You want to start your journey by reading Upanishads - Go ahead.
    9) You want to start your journey by reading Purana - Be my guest.
    10) You just don't like reading Puranas or other books. No problem my dear. Go by Bhakti tradition . ( bhakti- devotion)
    11) You don't like idea of Bhakti ! No problem. Do your Karma. Be a karmayogi.
    12) You want to enjoy life. Very good. No problem at all. This is Charvaka Philosophy.
    13) You want to abstain from all the enjoyment of life & find God - jai ho ! Be a Sadhu, an ascetic !
    14) You don't like the concept of God. You believe in Nature only - Welcome. (Trees are our friends and Prakriti or nature is worthy of worship).
    15) You believe in one God or Supreme Energy. Superb! Follow Advaita philosophy
    16) You want a Guru. Go ahead. Receive gyaan.
    17) You don't want a Guru.. Help yourself ! Meditate, Study !
    18) You believe in Female energy ! Shakti is worshipped.
    19) You believe that every human being is equal. Yeah! You're awesome, come on let's celebrate Hinduism!
    "Vasudhaiva kutumbakam" (the world is a family)
    20) You don't have time to celebrate the festival.
    Don't worry. One more festival is coming! There are multiple festivals every single day of the year.
    21) You are a working person. Don't have time for religion. Its okay. You will still be a Hindu.
    22) You like to go to temples. Devotion is loved.
    23) You don't like to go to temples - no problem. You are still a Hindu!
    24) You know that Hinduism ☺ is a way of life, with considerable freedom.
    25) You believe that everything has God in it. So you worship your mother, father, guru, tree, River, Prani-matra, Earth, Universe!
    26) And If you don't believe that everything has GOD in it - No problems. Respect your viewpoint.
    27) "Sarve jana sukhino bhavantu " (May you all live happily)
    You represent this! You're free to choose, my dear Hindu!
    This is exactly the essence of Hinduism, all inclusive .. That is why it has withstood the test of time inspite of repeated onslaught both from within and outside, and assimilated every good aspects from everything . That is why it is eternal !!!
    There is a saying in Rigveda , the first book ever known to mankind which depicts the Hinduism philosophy in a Nutshell -" Ano bhadrah Krathavo Yanthu Vishwathah"- Let the knowledge come to us from every direction "

    Some leather goods in India used to come from dead animals. These animals died a natural death. This is my understanding. However, today, I am sure that this is not the case. 😢

      I have heard of that type of leather, but have never seen it in person. It is an interesting concept because many synthetic (marketed as vegan) materials have a high environmental impact due to the manufacturing process. A good reminder that things may not always be as black & white as we think

    Are not yamas things that we strive for? And niyamas are the ones to avoid? How is nonviolence a thing to avoid? The word Ahimsa as well as well Asteya and Aparigraha, all start with A-, which is a negation. Non violence, Non Stealing, Non "hoarding". So we strive for nonviolence and nonstealing, We strive for yamas. They are big YES of Yoga.

    i see hesitation in most teachers regarding brahmacharya.. pls dont change the meaning to suit you. it means celibacy. you dont want to follow it, its fine.. but do not try to change the meaning of it.

      I like to teach the traditional meaning of yogic philosophy, but also tell my students how these teachings can apply to their life in the modern world- so that instead of hearing celibacy and dismissing the teaching as something that does not apply to their life they can keep a level of openness and feel like it can still be a guiding element in their life. I completely understand why some people want to uphold the true meaning 100% without interpretation, however I personally believe that allowing for some evolution in the way that we apply the teachings can make them more helpful to us in the current world.
