Security services with ATVs patrol this tunnel at intervals. When I left NYC in 1999 this was one of five abandoned-track tunnels. The other were metro types with third-rail that you couldn't possibly live in except for the abandoned service rooms and abandoned stations. People lived in 91st and City Hall stations just like they did Freedom Tunnel but it's in none of the books or docs.
A few questions because I find this place very interesting; 1) What did you do when a train was coming? How hard was it to find a place to hide? 2) Would you know how often Amtrak police patrol the tunnel? 3) I presume there is no electricity in the rails, but just to be sure? 4) How often did trains come by?
There is no electricity on the rails but obviously still be careful, IDK when Amtrak police is there, just hide in the shadows or any other cover if you can, and trains come by about every 20 minutes
The line use to be owned by the New York Central and also had 4 tracks with a 3rd rail for the electric engines to run on. Steamers were, obviously, not allowed because of the smoke they produced. cs.trains.com/ctr/f/3/t/165218.aspx
I went through there in the early 90's and on the south end of the tunnel that was the old major freight yard that was an open area but long abandon by then. Now you have the new tunnel on that end and all the new buildings that were built over. Love that place.
Yeo I'm into the same interests as you guys and I want to know if we can set up a agreement for the both of use to urban explore abandon places in NYC. I'm into photography so I kinda need to go into these places to post photos to my Instagram account @_the.navigator.2_ if you are interested to meet up hit me up on this comment or my Instagram account. I could also show you guys a place in the Bronx if you guys are interested, two abandon places.

Was a freight line from about 11th St. Went up west side between 10th and 11th aves. Goes up to Albany NY. Along the Hudson River, that I know of.

The tunnel was originally for track back in the heyday of Passenger service.

@ 3:52 You are underneath 72nd Street. The left bridge is Riverside Blvd and the right bridge is the entrance to the Henry Hudson Parkway.

When you reach the end of the tunnel, how do you get out? I only found one article but there was no video so I'm really confused.
U gotta get past a gate which is relatively easy if you're small then walk past behind basketball courts and go through a hole in that fence
