Back On The CBX1000 After 2 years!

- After 2 and a half years, the Honda CBX restoration is back underway! For those unfamiliar with this project it was something I started in late 2021. The project was intended to be more of a revival and light restoration but quickly escalated as the engine needed a complete overhaul after it became seized. The project went on the backburner for a multitude of reasons but now I am able to get back on it and we will see it through to completion.
This video is more about cataloging what we have in regards to parts and making a gameplan for how to move forward. The main goal is to get the engine cleaned, repaired, painted, and ready for assembly. Once assembled we can focus on the chassis so the project takes up less space in the shop.
Please check out the past videos for the full story on this iconic project.

Well I'm glad to be back on this bike as it's been a huge weight on my shoulders. There are many reasons it went on hold such as....life, but I'm going to stick this one out. The time is now!
What style videos would you prefer?
- 1 or 2 shorter less refined videos per month
OR
- A max of 1 longer video per month like the latest content?
Man I broke a sweat watching this one. Any longer I'll need a shower in the middle. OTOH i'm sittin'by the wood stove.
@@BrickHouseBuilds
My preference would be some shorter and detailed installments (cyl head, carbs, any possible changes and why) with possibly several longer less detailed installments (painting, graphics, just eat up time and are not as intriguing as the mechanical aspects given the bike we're talking about here) drawing on the shorter ones to pull it together. It's a big bike, lotsa one off process's when putting it back together. That and these bikes are drawing serious prices these days... just a thought, your bike your project...
@@BrickHouseBuilds the longer the better🙂
@@BrickHouseBuilds 2 long videos a month sounds great to me!!♥️
Thank you for your input!
This bike deserves nothing less than a full restoration.
Annnnnd thats what we are doing
@@BrickHouseBuilds I'm here for it!
I remember when this came out, half of us loved it and half thought it was ridiculous and OTT. However everyone loved the insane noise it made. In the UK the CBX came with lower bars, which I think suit the bike better. You are brave men, taking on such a complex restoration.
You summed it up perfectly! A sport kit would be sweet. I found one for sale and it may be worth getting
Fun fact - the European low bars, low/ rear set foot pegs, brake pedal, cables, and controls were available as a dealer install accessory in North America as the "sport control kit" from Honda when the bikes were new.
That Paul Jennings book has been absolute gold in my CBX resto.
It's definitely a wealth of information. Been working through it to help clarify my overall goal for the bike
@@BrickHouseBuilds Maybe I missed it in the previous videos (or forgot), but do you have a plan for the tank? That was a serious problem for me. Mine was kaput, and there's a real shortage of replacements out there. In the end I had to buy a badly dinged and slightly rusted silver one, and had it stripped, fixed and repainted red. Expensive!
@BenBlaney The tank that came with the bike was beyond kaput'. The tank on the bike now is a used replacement I sourced from Texas. Its in very good shape
One of the first videos I saw of yours was acquiring and pulling this thing down. My patience has paid off!
Awesome. I just have finished restoring my 1980 CBX. Love it. I have it for allmost 35 years. Original black color.
They looks soooo good in black
I tend to live small revvy engines, but I am looking forward to this. I have a soft spot for OTT engineering.
My buddy had one when they were new- we put a turbo on it (he was like that- biggest, fastest, best and most expensive personality). He had me ride it first as he had a broken ankle from hand gliding. We had set it for 3lb. boost. I was in 3rd gear and rolled the throttle on and as soon as it hit the boost STRAIGHT UP IN THE AIR! Never would ride it again-- when he sold it he claimed he would only get 500 miles on a chain lol. Keep up the great work guys!
I can't imagine a better sound than a turbo cbx
Cool! Need any tech tips/ advice/common knowledge, let me know! I know these bikes in my sleep, having owned mine since 1983 as a brand new bike. Yours is an early 1979 bike due to the engine numbers being on the upper rear of the engine, later '79's and up had the numbers just behind the cylinder block on the right side.
You will have an early style jackshaft with a spring loaded drive gear, later ones used a slotted nut to hold the gear on. I have one if you need an upgrade. Cam chain tensioner lock bolt can be tapped out to a 3/8" coarse thread bolt, works great(don't ask how I know this). Great job scoring all the seals & o-rings, plus getting the cam chain tensioners reconditioned as they are unobtanium. Other tough items to find are the oil pickup screen and alternator clutch plates/spring.
Ah, yes! Remember the solvent tank days cleaning parts, always tedious but rewarding when done!
Great to see you get back working on this ride, you will be duly impressed when you get it running. Thanks man!
I'm a relatively new viewer. I love Honda's CB750 line. I have one 1981K I bought in pieces and added a Vetter fairing. It isn't showroom, but it looks decent. I have been eyeballing another 1982 750F, but life is getting ahead of me and I don't have time to take on another project. Watching videos like these inspires me when I can't work on my bikes. I admire your ingenuity when reviving these bikes. Most people don't break out a welder-- let alone a lathe to repair a cheap old Honda.
🙏🙏
CBX1000 Total Chaos, Get er Done!! ❤
Looks like the real Z900 over there waiting for something, CBX build, excellent👌
It's a real Z900 and I can't wait to make a video on it 😎
Been waiting for the cbx for 2 years
Love from Pakistan brother ❤
🙏🙏
Can't wait for the updates to start
I like the plan -- if yutob asks, I give it 5 stars because it warms my heart -- in my imagination, I'm already riding it. Have a good one.
Lovely to see you starting the rebuild of the CBX! Looking forward to these videos coming soon…👏👏👏
Building a motor FROM SCRATCH. Wow. Awesome job.
Did the same thing on a Kawasaki ZX7 (1995). No big deal but I would not have attempted it without my Clymer manual. With the manual it went so smoothly you would not believe. The only real issues were in seating the cylinder block (jugs) you definitely need a few sets of ring compressors to not break a piston ring, and that was on a 4, and not a 6.
@@richardraby6266 Awesome. Yeah, shop manuals rule.
Finally, the CBX1000 is back! Yeah!
11:43 is why you have mats or rubber / foam mats on floor at benches. Save a lot of tears !! 😭
That thing is such a BEAST. Great bike. Great show.
I can't wait to hear what this sounds like. Such a cool bike.
Same here! We're gonna flood youtube with all the sound clips 🔥🔥
That’s a really special bike. Can’t wait to hear it fire up for the first time. You’ll get there, however long it takes I know you’ll both do a great job with it. Exciting stuff!
YESSSS!!!!! CBX is back glad to see this project come to light, bro. Ready to hear the elusive F1 roar come from its bellows 😅
Absolutely! I've made two more videos after this one and have another coming this Friday so definitely get caught up
1000% looking forward to every second of CBX content! How do you eat an Elephant? One bite at a time.
You two have a rocking great time because when you get done you'll have a great time
@@johnoconnor9331 Definitely going to have fun with this one
I would love to pick up a CBX at some point - preferably a running example. For myself, I've found that buying a cosmetically nice, low-mileage classic bike, and paying a little more for it, is far cheaper and less time-consuming in the long run. Doing a full teardown and rebuild on a CBX is quite the accomplishment. I wish you the best with it and will be watching the progress!
Starting with a clean bike is always preferred but I just wasn't in the position to get one at that level
@BrickHouseBuilds I completely understand. I've looked at several CBXs lately, but the owners were asking far more than what they were worth to me. Cheers!
Drummmmm rolllll pleasseeee!!!! Cough cough (for 2 years)…. And here we gooooo super pumped for you guys. This is going to be a fun project to follow
@milezero.racers Definitely been a journey to get this back on the schedule 😅
solid content. Looking forward with the restoration.
Tho I'm 110% devoted to my old CB750, the CBX has always lived in that magical/mystical place in my head. Really looking fwd to the future vids on this project! Fun video, fellas! A+++++
🤘🤘
Finally! Been waiting for this for a long time now!
A big job. Can’t wait to see the built.
Excellent! Whatever you post will be great 👍
@philipstubbs2432 thanks Philip 🙏
Good on you! Thank you for finally getting back to the set hung six! Look I get it, it is easy to run out of enthusiasm on something as complex as this CBX has been for you. Yes, I am excited for new CBX content! Great you got help. Lord knows we all need help here and there. Great news, for me at least!! Thank you thank you. Nothing worth while comes easy.
🙏🙏
I subscribed to your channel with CBX and have been waiting ever since for it. Finally the wait is over.
Yeah i hated having to shelf the project for so long
I enjoy watching you guys take old bikes and give them life again!!!!! I have purchased a couple CB 750 ‘s and watching your show has taught me many lessons on how to fix them up. Thanks for a show that is informative, reasonable and inspiring.
🤘🤘
Been waiting for this. They have cult following this side of the pond, are very rare and unreal expensive. So Im looking forward to the progress you guys make...
All in good time my man ❤
At last, looking forward to this one 🎉
Isn't it great how UA-cam allows you to take on projects like this. If you had to pay some shop to do this you'd be $50K into a $5K bike. Great organization job with all your parts.
Well youtube definitely isn't funding this but it helps. That's another reason it's been on the backburner lol
Awesome shop and bike will be watching this project for sure!
It should be entertaining for sure 😅
I've been waiting for this build for so long.. I'm glad your back on it.. This is one of my all time fav bikes from back in the day
I can understand why you've left that beast on the bench for so long, but good luck kid I wouldn't know where or how to start let alone how you've gotten where you are with this beast. God bless and good luck kid.
That was great thank you. I’m not surprised you put it off for a bit it’s a serious amount of work. All motorcycles are fantastic put the CBX is one of the special ones. I look forward to the updates when they happen.
Thank ya
Great. A friend bought one new, he was quite small so the bike looked gigantic!
Ya got a loooong road ahead of you there ... enjoy.
Definitely but we will get there
Nice to see you are back at the CBX. Since your last video on it a couple of years ago (as I was drooling over owning one), I bought two CBXs, a 1980 black and a 1982 white. I've done quite a bit on them but one day, I want to rebuild the 80's engine as it's higher mileage. I rebuilt the carbs on both, repainted the black one and restored all of its brakes (used DOT 5 fluid) and handlebar area and gave it some new tires. Had a wonderful summer with them but sadly, Winter is now here. Keep up the great work you're doing.
You guys bring back my teenage years, cleaning parts with petrol :-) really looking forward to seeing this CBX breath again!
YEAH, finally we are getting on to one of 2 bikes I was really looking forward to watching getting restored (the other one is the Benelli)
THANKS YOU SETH !
The Benelli project will begin before the end of the CBX series
If you need a bottle just let me know. Enjoyed the video B.J. look forward to this build. Had a chance to buy a new CBX in 1982. I was 19 living in Houma, Louisiana. Didn't pull the trigger. RIDE SAFE OUT THERE!
Hahaha I'll let you know!
What a great video BJ and Seth....
Really excited for this build.
I remember you tearing it down in your garage..
Not worried about the wait...,just really glad to see you getting to it.
Excellent content !...,easily one of the best motorcycle related chanels on youtube.
Oh and being a Kawasaki man myself..,My eyes are drawn to that Z900 in the background too..!!
Thanks guys..
God Bless
BG Wells.
@brianwells5258 Much appreciated Brian 🙏
BJ -- you and Seth just do what y'all gotta do and take whatever time it takes. All I've gotta do is sit out here in front of my computer screen and LEARN from you two! Pretty decent duty, if you can get it!
Looking forward to the build of this famous machine. I remember well about cleaning parts, have spent many happy years doing that !
Respect to you ‘Team’. I once did total overhaul on one CBX end ‘90. Not an easy job. Keep the rubber good side up.
FUMES, gotta love em. I remember back in the 80s I was torching out a complete 65 elcamino floor board out and hit a Mary J stash. Talk about some fumes. I was do it with car doors and windows sclosed in -30° F. The rest of that day and night was a blur. The shit we did in our younger days.
🤣🤣
Well, as long as this project has been on siesta, my CB900C project that I ordered NWT parts from you, has been on siesta for two now... and will be for at least another year. Plus the other project that has been on hold for almost four, and will be more, I keep riding that bike. It's just too good, and one of the best allrounder bikes (that I have) that my wife and I use. Plus the half assed, half done KLR project, which is the best allrounder bike I have. Yes, that thing called life, just like you say. Ce la vie.
@@Twowheelshredder 🙏🙏
Was disappointed when I first saw this was only 20 minutes! It's gonna be an enormous amount of work so no wonder!
Yeah just setting up to dig into the real work in the coming videos
Just FYI - be aware when cleaning and painting - there are magnesium engine covers on most of the early CBXs...the alternator cover and the sprocket cover for sure, sometimes the 4 cam end covers. I took some of my parts to have chemically cleaned and they dissolved in the cleaning solution. I've been told a early 454 Chevy valve spring can help the alternator clutch from slipping after cutting the faces. The earliest CBX engines had straight cylinder studs, later ones had spiral "fins" on the studs.
What a project! I wish you the best possible outcome and will enjoy the updates. It may be a bear, but I know you guys respect the machine.
So glad you are starting this now! Record every minute detail please!
I've been waiting patiently for this.. I love the cbx , my dream bike
For cleaning parts with tooth brushes I suggest you try tooth brushes used to clean dentures, they have stiffer bristles and the handles are heavy duty.
David Silver Spares is awesome. I'm reviving my '79 CB400 for my son, i got a bunch of stuff from them. I need to place one more order there yet for it.
I have the food storage containers but I use the cheap freezer bags the ones the table on the bag that way I don't loose them
This could be your Magnus Opus of projects, good luck guys, have fun and i am sure your viewers look forward to its success.
Amazing video 👏👏👏👏🏴🏴

Yey! The CBX 🙂
Lookin' forward to seeing her running
Not the easiest of bikes to pick for a restoration. But I don’t think that would faze you two. Looking forward to following this one.
Yesss, looking forward to this build. Good luck lads 🤞🏻🇮🇪👍🏻
Epic build coming up , excellent .
Watching with lots of interest as planning to do the same as soon as I can find one at sensible price good luck and thanks for starting this project t again
I like your recycled storage containers. (Plastic cake container) :) Also looking forward to the CBX updates. Keep them coming.
I never throw them away lol
BJ, this is going to be a cool rebuild, and so much fun when completed. Can't wait to see the 1st test ride. Short or long videos are fine, but I think on a large rebuild like this, longer may work better.
Had to pause the video to see if any of the 95 comments complained that you mentioned using a sandblaster on the cases...
People complain about everything.
I owned a cbx 1000, fantastic machine. The only drawback i found was pulling power wheelies and hard riding would stretch the drive chain. I sold it to finance my wedding. One of them bad decisions thats hard to get over.
whoa, I know the feeling
Leo from The Supersport She’d makes a kit to re surface the alternator clutch. It works a treat.
I'll look into that thanks
Glad to see you working on the CBX. I’m not sure if this is accurate but I believe the alternator clutch surfaces are hardened. If you machine them you will weaken the surface. I think they make discs that can be attached or you can spot weld the discs together. I hope this helps.
Correct. I discovered that later in the day. Definitely need to do more digging
can't wait!
Just finished a two year restoration on my CBX. You could catch me curled up on the floor all the time.
🤣🤣🤣
I like the kawasaki z1 in the background
Hopefully we get a video on that before too long. Waiting on the customer currently
Excellent video.
🙏🙏
Wow that’s a lot of parts patience and skill will see you guys through it all , this is going to be brilliant and I know to high standards, are you doing anything special with exhausts bj this is an awesome bike and is going to sound amazing whichever you choose very best of luck guys take care 👍👌🏁🏁🏍️🏍️🏍️❤️
Thanks Peter. For the exhaust I have a 6/6 on the shelf but I may go for a factory reproduction unit from CMSNL.
@ nice mate that’s a mission of a build lol
You see howmuch parts there are how difficult was it for honda to make it from scratch engineers my hat off and you for trying to make it a running bike again😊
At last!!!! I kept hoping you would get on to the cbx project Bj, I was fortunate to have one of these when they first came out, exactly the same as yours, I must admit they handled terrible, but they sure did look out of this world for the time, and if you stick a set of six straight through megaphones on it, not only will the sound blow your mind, but probably your ear drums as well 😂. Good luck and hope everything goes well. 👍
🤘🤘
Fumes=Fun
I remember drag racing a cbx with my V-Max down cicero ave in Chicago in 1987. what makes that particular race so memorable was he egged me on while I had a passenger on the back. It Must have been humiliating for that guy to lose a race against a bike with a passenger. No need to leave comments about how stupid I was [ I already know ].
Owning a vmax now, i absolutely know that cbx wouldn't stand a chance! Vmax is brute power
Overall, it’s mostly complete, & from my pov I’d be able to strip & assemble the chassis easily enough,my only concern for me would be the engine,I’d probably be able to sort out the electrics at a push, even the carbs, I look forward to seeing the progress on this bike, one piece of information for you is be careful with the comstar wheels, if you disassemble them ,they won’t go back together, top job guys
Luckily much of the chassis is in good shape so won't take an endless amount of work to restore. The wheels simply need a good cleaning.
In case you didn't know I have some videos on making a custom comstar using goldwing and cx parts
Great to see you back on the build....was wondering what happened to you? I'm doing the top end of my CBX this winter as well, so your timely vid is welcoming. I vote for two shorter vis as the long one tend to be a lot of filler footage. Get at it boys!!
@forrestmiller4055 Ive been cranking out videos non stop. I just had to put a pause on the cbx specifically. We will see what I can get posted but like all my videos there wont be filler 😎
I clicked the like button in 5 seconds of video play
Much appreciated 🙏
Hey guys I wish to apoligize for the AH from my country that ripped you guys off we are not all like that. Do enjoy all your videos, I remember all of the bikes you work on when they were new.
That's a lot of bits. ~Good luck
Glad to see you are back on the CBX. I knew a guy who had one and he used to go drag racing with it. What colour are you going for on the tank etc. If you are going to change it they look fantastic in silver.
All original. Red like you see
this makes me feel like I need to do my year and a half later vf750f lolll
Awesome bikes!
Next time stick a sheet of paper to the box and write down everything on the paper as you put it in the box, I mean I never do that myself and therefore spend hours wandering around my garage looking for parts that I “put somewhere safe”, but we both know we should 😂👍
🤣🤣 I'm always telling Seth stuff to do but I rarely take my own advice
I kind of miss the BHB in the small garage. To me, it was more organized, and we saw the completion of bikes in a lessor time frame. Now we get clips of this bike or that bike. It's difficult to keep track or even be interested.
I'm sorry you feel that way. I assure you we are far more efficient now. The video structure is also different as I'm not doing 60 short videos on a single build. I'm trying to put more in each episode as thats what the audience seems to resonate with and it's a better viewer experience. That's why you feel you don't see them as much.
Please understand this is a business and there are so many things I'm trying to manage behind the scenes to make it all work. It was incredibly difficult in the small garage as I couldn't even fit this project in there. I had access to a warehouse for storage but if a part got delayed in shipping I'd have to take the next few hours to stop work, load up a bike, transport it to the warehouse, swap it out and start over. Now it's all in house along with my merch and parts sales.
I'll always be thankful for the small space but it was very much time to expand
More space, more efficient, less having to leave the shop to run errands! Not to mention more organized!!
This is one of my Dream Bikes 😮 to expensive for me 😢
Definitely expensive to do
Build video ❤🤩😍😍😍
I had a cbx1000 in 1978 when I was 19-the handling on crap tyres was terrifying as were the poor brakes-was a fast heavy bike-but I loved her in silver, extremely expensive to buy now
Reeeeedddd Robin!
Yyyyuuummmm!!!!
BTW - The factory shop manual is the book you need!
Copies are available.
Elbow grease, can i get that from Dave Silvers? Im in Norfolk n good, he's in Suffolk n what about an hours drive from me, here in England where it doesn't rain much. 😂 thanks for doing this and can i have a ride on it when you finish it? 😊
I think it's part number EBG-9045 😉
