Chelsea Northrup compares 60 megapixel full-frame compact travel cameras: the Leica Q2 and new Leica Q3 to the new Sony a7C R. She compares the price, handling, specs and more to help you find the ultimate full-frame travel camera. - Наука та технологія
With an unlimited budget I think I would go for both.
Leaf shutter is such a great benefit of several fixed-lens cameras! I haven’t used a Q camera but (apart from fast flash synch) it made my already small Ricoh GR3 even more discreet for candid portraits etc.
I got the 7CR after testing it out at a Sony event. It’s truly an amazing camera & despite the Leica’s leaf shutter & higher burst rate (& admittedly a sharper viewfinder), I don’t see the allure - Im sure emotion plays into it. I love CR shutter and even though I shoot sports I don’t ever need nearly 8 frames/sec. I’m more concerned with buffer relief and with my UHSII sandisk card I’m more than satisfied with it. Thanks for the great review !
Thanks for this video. One aspect I don't think you went into was difference in AF?
I sadly sold my Leica Q2 3 years ago and regretted it ever since. I now can’t wait for my new Q3 to arrive.
Did your q3 arrive yet? I have no idea how long I’ll be waiting!
Brilliant video and so very informative. Thank you.
Where is that leather camera strap from? Would love something simple like it.
Waiting for the Fujifilm XPro 4
Same!
Yes same. I wonder when they will release the xpro 4. I cant wait!!
We’re going to wait for a long time.
wow this is the comparison Ive been wating for!
Wish we would’ve got actual real life usage scenarios with these two cameras. You’re probably the only ones on here who can give that to us. For example, street photography, casual family get together, or out on a picnic lol Appreciate you!
I wish we could do something other than 'street photography.' How about being a photo-journalist, one who is sent on assignment to capture a picture to make the front page. I was one in the U.S. Air Force and what a blast it was. It was far more than shooting pix of fire hydrants, signs, people aimlessly walking but real events. Getting to the flightline where young kids were maintaining fighter aircraft, people working in shop fixing things, aircraft being loaded with cargo, photographing aircrew flying cargo aircraft. It was an adventure. That is where I learned more about photography than any other way. There was not much taking time to get the static picture, you have to be quick and 'get the shot.'
@@bondgabebond4907 wrong page for that. Good times tho!
Nice video. Keep them coming!
I own the Q2 mono and the Sony A7c with an assortment of Sigma and Sony lenses. I also own the Leica M11 with the 60 mp sensor. I love shooting the Leicas and I was tempted by the Q3 but I think the A7cr makes sense since I have the small Sony and sigma lenses. Great review. 🎉
Would be grateful for your thoughts on the Leica D Lux 8.
If my GAS makes it make sense for me get a 60MP camera, I’ll get the A7R V. The size and weight of the A7C R isn’t reduced enough to make it worth if for me to sink the extra cost to just to have a smaller version of the equivalent full A7*, especially if it means losing the buttons I like and having to work with a poorer EVF.
How are those 2 comparing to a Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K ? Which one has no rolling shutter ?
I just bought a A7R5 with 24-70/2.8 after thinking about a Q3 for months. I needed something to keep up with children running around. The focusing features of the A7R5 pushed me to it. (I also already have a digital Leica M 262).
Hey Miss Chelsea... Q2/M shooter here also...Thanks for the comparison.
Love your videos! What is the hype about compact digital cameras with CCD sensors for travel photography? Are they any good? How do they hold up to modern CMOS sensors? Would love to hear your take on it:)
and which camera performs best on autofocus ? important feature for me
One question if you will please.didnt flash sync speed relate to mechanical shutters? How is it a mirrorless uses sync speed ???!!!!
Thank you very much for your very good video ✨
The Sony wins because you can put a compact 50mm prime on it.
Yes! My Sony G 50mm f/2.5
I have it too, that’s one very very sharp lens!
Glad I don't have GAS for the $6K Leica. Just ordered the A7CR. I think it will be a great travel camera.
I love seeing people trying to justify the Leica. "It's all about the experience, it's so simple to use etc." Just put your important settings in the shortcut menu on the A7CR and keep one prime lens on, then it's also very simple to use :) Experience wise? I'd say the AI AF, 7stops stabe, focus bracketing etc. etc. in the Sony provides a pretty amazing experience
@@TheArtist441exactly
Now with that being said, if Sony released an RX1R iii I'm preordering it immediately 😂
@@duvalpenny100 me too!!!
@@TheArtist441 Your point is quite disingenuous, the UX is NOT the only points specified for liking the Leica Q3 over the a7Cr : Build quality, IP certification, leaf shutter, Leica's color magic, way better EVF, more compact, Integrated macro lens, the summilux lens is great, etc),. And sorry but few "important settings in shortcuts" can't beat one of, if not the best UI in a camera(especially since shortcuts also exist in a Leica), and let's not forget Leica's companion app.
To my eyes, both are great in their own ways and they actually are not even real competitors since the A7Cr is about having multiple lenses. Its not even the same concept philosophy at all... An RX1RII (or it's potential iteration) Fuji X100VI or a RicohGR3(x) would be more appropriate comparisons.
In fine, it''s really a "to each their own" type of comparison...
And where exactly would you get a full frame pancake fe mount lens? I’ll wait.
Lovely video. I already have A7C and contemplating to upgrade to A7CR but after watching your video and since I did have enough resources I bought Leica Q3 instead. I am more photography shooter than video shooter. Though Q3 had a pretty premium price but no regrets. I have been shooting with it more these days than my Sony A7C.... but anytime I want to shoot more wide or zoom then I switch to A7C with my good arrays of Sony primes and zoom lenses
Own and love the Q.
Interesting. Thanks.
Thanks, was hoping for some sort of Leica vs Sony A7c comparison. Was thinking of a practical test, going one going out with Leica and the other Sony A7c and seeing if in practice there is a significant difference in results in terms of images taken as seen without pixel peeping. Could even try a A7cii (i.e. not the A7cR) with two lenses e.g. the 24mm and 40mm compact ones with the aperture ring on the lens (which is what I use with my A7c) which make a very flexible and light option - and costs a lot less!
Yeah but those G lenses are F2.5 or 2.8. Would be great to see Sigma come with f2 options
In this type of camera my favorite is the Nikon zf because they manage to sneak in that mini memory card and the design feels complete. I like the silver on the Sony but it feels like it’s missing something looks wise
love the Leica Q2! where did you get the black Leica dot on the Q2 by the way?
Ordered the Q3 for same reason as you stated and have been charged full price but still waiting and waiting…. One day I hope to actually hold it on my hands.
J’aime ton style. Continue ✨
I have a Q2 & Q3 and every night, I put them to sleep in their soft camera bags. Love them. ❤❤
Ich hole heute meine neue Q3 ab. Bin schon total gespannt auf die Kamera! :-)
Which lens is on your Sony .? Respectfully
Yes, please more compression and episode for families
Great comparisons. Coming from an X-Pro2, I would pick up the Leica but 28mm is not my style. would much prefer a 35 or even 40mm. Thought about getting the A7cii if only that EVF was a bit larger and sharper. 😕
Sony with voigtlander 50mm f1,2 voigtlander 10mm f5,6 and zeiss loxia 85 f2,4. Or the sirui 35mm anamorphic (some of my best picture from it) voigtlander 75mm f1,5 m mount adapted and Voigtlander 110mm f2,5 APO macro. Both kit inside a peak design sling.
But I would try the Q3 paired with my MDA with the zeiss 21mm 😁
I own a Sony A7IV and mostly shoot with my three GM lenses (24/35 and 50). First I liked the Q2, then the Q3 and in the end I was even interested in an a7CR. However, practice and my experience show me that I don't want to miss a good viewfinder and the ability to change the lens. The GM lenses can easily compete with a Q2/Q3. Then some tests showed that the CR or CII is not that compact compared to an a7IV or a7R for what you end up giving up.
GM lenses actually destroy the Q2/Q3 lens. You can find comparisons on UA-cam, even the cheap Viltrox lens beats the Leica lens that they used ...
@@youuuuuuuuuuutubeLeica lenses are designed to have certain “flaws” so that they can keep the lenses small and still have much more 3 dimensionality than the lenses you are talking about. I know this because I have a summilux and Nikon primes myself, and the Leica lenses are superior
One question I have regarding upscale electronic cameras is warranty and repair service. With old mechanical film cameras, I knew several guys who could repair most for $100., and just about any for $200. With cheap DSLRs, say under $500., probably by the time it breaks, you just throw it away and buy a newer model anyway. But in things like Leica M11, Hasselblad 100MP model, etc., I want to know that it has either long term warranty or can be repaired at reasonable cost.
Leica repairs are not going to be that cheap, but because of the build quality it’s less likely to break in the first place. And Leica keeps parts around for a LONG time. Easily a decade but sometimes several.
I use Nikon DSLR's, Fujix100v and the Leica Q3. I've used Sony but I sold it because I didn't enjoy using it; it's a computer with a lens. Whenever possible I only grap the Leica. it became my most used camera in a short period. It's the joy of really photographing. The thing with Leica is that the Leica lenses perform at their best full open. That's the way the lenses are designed and it gives "the Leica look". No other brand can give you that because they are designed for best results around f8.
I did the same. Sony heck of green skin tone. Felt like I am having HULK effect. I was spending more time correcting skin tone that taking photos and enjoying.
@07SATS im assuming it's an older Sony camera. The new ones are on point with the white balance
@@AllCarsUnitedI have tried new one as well and I was not impressed. What I love is Sony’s focus tracking which is miles ahead but rest is like autopilot landing plane and not impressed. I want to see Sony’s tracking, Fuji dials, film sims and Leica’s color magic in one camera 😊
You hit the nail on the head in your review as one of the key differences I have found (also using Sony Mirrorless and Q2) is that the Sony cams tend to be feature rich and more technical interfaces. The Leica Q2 is just 'simple' and you do bias more time to composition and enjoy taking the image rather than focus on menus and settings. Both are great cameras and can produce super results. For me the Sony A7C offers better value but the pairing of a specific lens with a FF sensor does give the Q2/Q3 and edge
The amount of detailes that the Leica shows is outstanding
Please do more
Could Sony make a lens with a leaf shutter?
Keep in mind that with both the Leica Q2 and Q3, you get the Leica top of the line summilux lens which are more expense than the camera itself if you buy them separately for the M system (the M system one is F1.4 and this one F1.7). I have the original Leica Q and Sony A7RV as well as the Leica M10. The Leica Q1/2/3 lens are comparable to Sony GM or better. Also the Leica lens has a built-in macro capabilities. The Leica Q2 is actually a great value for money if factor in lens because a Sony A7CR + a GM lens is at least $4000 which is the same price you would pay for a used, closed-to-new, Leica Q2. Admittedly, the sensor in the Leica Q2 is not as good as Sony A7CR's 61 mp sensor. Also, Leica has worse autofocus for use. So keep that in mind when you make the buying decision.
The Viltrox 28mm f1.8 is a better lens than the one found on the Leica.
buying leica is never a logic decision anyway it's an luxury item which can shoot photos.😂
@@kevc.2958 I agree. A Q2/3 is a luxurious daily gadget. It can do many things better than other cameras, the perfect design, the high-quality workmanship, it is compact, it is a Leica.
But it has a very high price and compared to other products it is not always worth it. In the end it's the picture that decides and this is where the biggest disappointment comes. Anyone who thinks they can buy a camera like this and take the best pictures will unfortunately be disappointed. It is the person behind the camera and the subject that determines the perfect picture and not the camera.
That Sigma lens is not even remotely comparable to the Leica, though. You can't even match the Leica in the Sony ecosystem. Maybe with quality if you switch to something like the Sony 35GM.. but there's more to it. The Leica is actually manual focus with a functional distance scale. Sony is focus by wire. To a street shooter, that already makes the Leica the easy choice. But the Leica is also a macro lens. If you want to match these type of features at the quality the Leica lens brings... You're adding multiple lenses on the Sony price tag. They start to narrow quite a bit.
Just a sidenote!
Yes, please more compression
An equivalent lens price should be considered in these comparisons and it won’t be that much deference in price
Q3 is where it is at. I own one, and also Q2 monochrome and Sl2 silver. I love the simplicity of my three Leicas. I use a Fuji HS2 for events and sports.
I would definitely purchase the Q3 as less is more!! You can't beat the Leica ergos, build quality, and menu system. Thank you for bringing the A7CR to our attention. And although a couple of stops slower, the Sigma 24mm f/3.5 DG DN is also an excellent choice for the Sony (tiny and very nice to use).
lol the leica without a grip have bad ergo... the auto focus on the sony blast the Leica...
For me and my photography needs, I will go with the Fujifilm XPro 4 or XT5.
No Zf review ?
I would choose the Sony
😎😎😎,,, thank u for what u do
About a year and a half ago I went all in on a Sigma fp-L. Never regretted it. Even more compact yet has the same 61mp full frame sensor.
I love what the fp L offers and it's modularity is cool but also can be it's downside. I need an EVF and the extra cost and size of the addon is a deal breaker for me. Also lacking any stabilization is a bummer. Otherwise it's a very intriguing option.
You might be the only person who bought that camera!
0:39 cool way to mount a monitor, never seen that before.
Don't forget those georgeous Leica colors!
That prehistoric EVF on the Sony is a deal breaker for me.
It's not prehistoric, as it is a completely different evf. It's bigger, brighter, very clear and sharp and you wouldn't guess that this is just 2.4mpix. I thought the same, but as I got both new cameras in my hand I was really surprised. The new and the old A7C have really nothing from each other. Give it a try, you might be surprised.
I’ve just been exactly through this conundrum and ended with the A7CR. Two reasons: the waitlist for a Q3 is six months, and there’s no way I’d be content without a zoom lens.
When I think of, for the same price, the three unbelievable lenses I could get with the Sony, plus use my vintage Nikkors . . . winner. But I do love the Leicas.
I love my A7cr
There might be a reason I choose the Sony over the Leica. There might actually be 3,000 reasons.
As I fly my Alpha cameras on my Airpeak S1... There IS no comparison. The size of the A7cr is so small and with the 24,40,and 50mm F2.5 or 2.8 lenses, I am getting 20% better flight times than with the A7r5. AND, I already have all the glass. Selling my A1 for the time being, prepping for the A-1 Mark 2.
real world comp would be cool
Nice video
Nice friend parking their Leica with you
Now with flip screens
Photography has circled back to
The Leica Rollie wars
Oh my god. For 20 years experienced in photography. I grew up in a family only taking about raw picture. The left side picture leica Q3 provide is holy awsomr. The colour everything, its more comfortable if you looking at the picture for long time. But if I wish i got money to buy it 😂. I will work hard for couple of month and buy the leica q3 even it make me broke
Other day I jumped the rails: got a Leica SL2 with the 50 F2.0 and while I was at it… picked up an A7iv. Why? Because I needed a home for my E Mount Voigtlanders. And the A7CR is lovely. But will say this - to my eyes the video footage out of the Leica… it really is something else.
It is an interesting comparsion. For me personalley, the Leica is just something totally different. Thats the camera to love a piece of art. The A7Cii/R are a big step in terms of look and feel, as the first C I really feels like a cheap camera. The new finisch of the rubber and the metal is really lovely. I was surprised how good looking the black version is. What I miss with the Leica is the point, that this sensor doesn't like low light and this type of camera is screaming for intimate situations, so it wouldn't match for me. With the Sony you can go with the 33mpix sensor for an even better price and often better sensor. So at the end, for me it would be one of the Sonys.
I concur...if you are doing professional work...use the Sony...hands down.
Hanging out or just a hobby...Leica is just fine.
4K indoors guys?! Yes!
Have you become the better presenter now? -I think so. REALLY good video Chelsea! Succinct information without going into the weeds.
I liked her recorded voice for the specs comparison. ASMR camera review!
For me the choice is easy- Fuji X-t5 +2-3 lenses is my travel/trekking solution and should I dare using a fixed-lens body, the Fuji X100v would be an easy choice....
If money was no object I would buy both. The Sony with some glass. But money is an objest so I chose the Q3 😀
don’t know if you read comments this long after you post videos, but wondering if you’re still happy with your Q and if Tony is still happy with his A7CR>
That frame of Chelsea with that massive lens on there, looks like she built some demon spawn cursed loadout in Warzone lol. That looked massive.
I went for the Sony. I am not against Leica, I had a Leica M in the past, but being limited to 28mm wasn’t for me. And with Sony I have the choice of all those great Voigtlander lenses. But I have to say that the viewfinder and the display of the Sony are clearly borderline. Still the results can be amazing. I also shoot GFX, it is not on that level for sure, but the Sony is pretty good.
My issue with interchangeable lens cameras for EDC is I get GAS for new glass too often and then once I have lenses I get choice paralysis when I go to grab the camera.
So I want a fixed lens camera but that Q3 is just too expensive sadly, this is why so many people have fallen for the X100 line. Hopefully Fuji brings a new one soon and can actually keep it in stock 🤞
4:22 they are NOT rangefinders ! It´s EVF´s (in "rangefinder" style).
I think we all know what she meant.
Given unlimited budget...would go with sony a7c R and 16-35mm f/4 for a walk around camera as the single lens is a bit too limiting for my taste. However, if I really wanted a fixed lens camera I will wait for the next version of the fuji x100v.
Back in the day I owned 2 Leica M6's and 6 of the M lenses fondly recalling walking out my door with one or two lenses based on mood just loving the experience, quality, and simplicity in pocket or small bag. Though I love the Leica quality, Sony lens quality has come a long way, and something like the A7c R with the 16-35, yes a little bigger, will deliver better results while being able limit how much of the technology I use.
If only Nikon full frame wiith it's fabulous colors would make an A7CR in rangefinder style, with a higher MP viewfinder and a little joystick.🎉❤
Is there a super high quality 28mm with at least f/2 available for Sony? The Sony 28mm f/2 is subpar.
No but it's a very wide for a 28mm....lot of people say it seems like a 26mm at least.. For example the Sony RX1 is 35mm but ithe FOV is like a 32mm.
If you wanted to match it with a A7CR then opt for something like a Zeiss Batis 25mm F2 which is compact combo.
a6700 + 24mm GM, This is my daily standard equipment. Most of the time, I use manual focus, turn off the screen, and only use the viewing window and FL film simulation. It is still very interesting. When I need SONY's powerful autofocus, I can use it at any time, also available. Is SONY are boring computer? It depends on how you use it.
Going for the Sony as I already have many lenses to use with it, also as my main camera is also Sony it will be easier to switch between the 2 cameras as the menu is the same, also I use the crop feature assigned to a button on the A7rv when using primes, helps me compose, something I will continue with on the cr,
That said it’s not a Leica 😢
Having had the RX1R2 I’d get the A7CR with the opportunity of being able to choose lenses. I’d have a Zeiss Planar 35mm f2 on it much of the time for street as the RX1R was too clunky for manual focus and the Sony menus were terrible back then.
The Sony, especially together with the Sigma set of Contemporary f2 primes, is just so much more value for money. But I guess that anybody that has to consider something so peasantry as value for money would never consider a Leica
Same audience - and how! I sold my A7C to buy a Q2. I feel I sacrificed autofocus and external mics for more megapixels and SOUL. I am mostly happy I no longer lust after the “next lense”, and I love the Leica menus.
You should've concentrated on the Q3....why is the old Q2 even in the picture?
Hi guys 🤗
Why not comparing with the Nikon z f ?
... because nobody buys Nikon anymore.
Fujifilm owns this travel rangefinder market.
Why are we comparing them in the first place. ? If one has fixed lens and other one has interchangeable lens option.
Because most people would like to hear the comparison.
Even with unlimited budget I would still buy an a1 for photographs. Sacrificing performance for esthetics is kinda silly. I think if you wanna take great photographs just buy the best tool you can afford, and who cares what it looks like.
Leica Q2 Monochrome for me
The Sony only has first curtain electronic shutter which may alter bokeh in certain circumstances.
I was a bit worried about this too until I realized the default shutter setting in most if not all Sony FF cameras is EFCS, and I never changed it. I've always shot with this setting on and I never even noticed the bokeh altering effects under a high shutter speed. I see it now when I go looking for it in older photos yes but it just showed me it won't bother me in the least if I've always used that setting!
@@TheArtist441 Makes sense !
Always fancied the leica especially the q3, but the ££. The a7cr just makes so much more sense. As a canon shooter I just wish canon did a similar body. But can see the a7cr in my bag for travel and street. So Chelsea, if your friend hadn't given you the option of a great Leica deal what would you have chosen?
I don’t believe there is a substitute for the Leica, specially as you’re mainly paying for the lens that’s fixed to it and the body comes for free. If you did the same with the Sony, you would spend even more than the q2/3 on the lens alone. Sure, the sharpness of the lenses are similar, but the 3d rendering in the optics isn’t even close. The Q1 is therefore still a great option
Don’t do it get the first iteration of the Q it’s the same lens and you can pick it up for below 2k. The lens alone would cost 4k. Once you have tried one you will see what all the fuss is about. I skipped the q2 as was not worth the upgrade but the Q3 is a different ballgame if you want cropability.
@@18yearsoldnot hopefully someone will do a video on this soon. I was hoping this video was going to delve into this. Always wanted the Q3, but 6 month wait and 6k
@@WestWightPhotography same here. Im very pleased though with just a smaller tl2 and a tl 35mm 1.4 which are crop sensor but I believe have the same sort of rendering and it’s technically a 50mm equivalent which I happen to prefer. I will also get one of the q cameras one day though, but for me the q original makes more sense because I have the crop lens, so therefore won’t need a high res q2/3. Shame about the dust issue though…
A cropped image from a 28mm lens will NEVER have the advantages of a true 50mm or 75mm lens as far a subject separation and bokeh, among other things.
So there is that.
3:21 damn that was quite hard enough
I wish canon would bring out an equivalent.
So many of the same things, including the same sensor :D
I would take the camera on the bookshelf behind you. Also I am buying the A7CR. I cant even concentrate this woman is so beautiful.
