Summer of '82, I had just gotten my driver's license and my first car, which lacked FM radio. Although I was into rock radio by that point, I found myself back being a devoted WNBC listener. It's entirely possible that I was listening to this exact broadcast. Aa always, thanks Ellis.

I had forgotten how well they did music-intensive radio in the early 80's. Just a year before the Z100 launch on FM.

I think a lot of us have forgotten that WNBC had decent ratings as a music station in the early 80s, and kept it up right up to the end, though they did take a hit after the Stern firing. It really was a great sounding radio station.

In the early 80s, I was on the radio in Atlantic City, and from 135 miles away, I listened to WNBC everyday

@@EllisFeaster But WNBC-AM 66 as a music station would not be able to survive with the music format past 1988 when the station was sold and became sportsradio 66 WFAN. That's why 77 WABC switched to the talk format on May 10,1982 because the ABC officials found out in early 1982 that the future of music radio was on the FM Band and that the future of the AM Band was either all news or all talk or all sports. Though 66 WNBC did broadcast in AM Stereo. But unfortunately for 66 WNBC, AM Stereo never caught on.

Jerry N. By the late 80s NBC Decided it wanted out of the radio business. They wanted concentrate on TV. By the time they sold the station they were moving away from music. Imus, & Colmes were close to all talk, as well as sports in the evening. Even Soupy in middays was doing as much talk as music. If WNBC had survived, they would have continued in that talk direction.

Wasn't Kevin Metheny (sp?) the PD at this time? This was about the time Stern was hired from DC.

Yes. This was a couple of months before Stern.

“Curb your appetite with AIDS.” Timing for naming this product was impeccable.

Actually, the dietary candy was spelled AYDS. I have to wonder how much its sales suffered once the disease came to prominence. The candy had been around for quite awhile before the disease. This spot was from 1982, about a year after the disease commanded worldwide attention.

InvestorGuy66 WXLO was at 98.7 in NYC. It used the name 99X. Before it became WXLO, it was WOR FM, and by 1981 it became 98.7 Kiss FM.

For Chicago radio fans, besides Big Ron having been at 99X in-between stints at WCFL, Tommy Edwards was a dj at WOR-FM in the late 60's before ending up at WLS where besides his dj duties, was also the program director and Uncle Lar's (Larry Lujack) Little Tommie.
