- BBC radio broadcast on 29 October 1967, featuring the choir of St John’s College Cambridge, directed by George Guest and accompanied by Jonathan Bielby (organ). This was the last of an 11-part weekly series intended as a follow-on to an earlier series called “Britain’s Cathedrals and their Music”, which had focused on cathedrals alone, whereas “Choirs and Places” featured mainly non-cathedral choirs. A planned 12th programme from the Temple Church in London was never completed. The programmes were introduced by Sir John Betjeman.
1. Magnificat in E (Bernard Rose)
2. Canzona in C major (Dietrich Buxtehude)*
3. Hear the voice and prayer (Cyril Rootham)
4. They that put their trust in the Lord (Robin Orr)
5. Litanies (Jehan Alain)*
6. Hymn of St Columba (Benjamin Britten)
7. Magnificat “Sancti Johannes Cantabrigiense” (Michael Tippett)
* played by Jonathan Bielby
The choir under Guest produced such a vibrant and exciting sound!
The boys at St. John’s have always sounded crisp and steadfast, with elegant tone quality.
Truly beautiful
Magnificent. Thank you for sharing.
I thought perhaps this was going to be the recording "In Quires & Places Where They Sing" for St John's which features, amongst other things, Naylor's Vox Dicentis and Howells's Gloucester Evening Canticles
We will upload that LP in the course of time.
look forward to that
