Metric A/B was, for me, a TOTAL game changer. To be able to flip back and forth between your reference tracks, AND see the FFTs overlaid has helped me finally get my mixes (and masters) where I've always wanted them to be--and I've been doing this for a VERY long time. (Also, I would throw into a list of game-changing plugs Slate VSX, even though it's not just a plug, of course. For those of us without treated rooms, it's a literal godsend.)
MetricAB is AMAZING. It's kinda tricky to figure out how to sync it with your own track for revisions but once it's synced properly the A/Bing is very seamless.
I use metric AB all the time it’s fantastic. I’ve saved many panning and phase issues in mixes by using it to figure out what’s going on. It’s really good and loading reference tracks in is really easy and it works great.
Silencer is the bomb. I gave up on mixing the tracks i eas getting and was sample replacing on every mix. This plugin is a must-have if you are mixing live drums.❤❤❤ it
Same, it’s been fantastic- probably the most important plug-in for a beginner like me who doesn’t even know what sound I’m aiming for without A/B’ ing a professional mix of the same or very similar song
Honestly, I didnt expect much from the video since these go usually like "these are the top sounding compressors/synths/whatever that make your mix perfect" but your take was really good on it. I'll definitely take a look at silencer! I chop up drumsloops a lot and encounter the bleed problem 90% of the time. Sometimes it sounds cool, somtimes its just annoying to mix...
Have you ever tried Sonnox Drum Gate? When yes, why do you prefer Silencer? I own both and just for the Decay and the Leveler Option I always grab Sonnox. The Drum Gate is available for around 35-45€ when it's in sale.
With you on SIlencer. Generally with BSA PlugIns, I tend not to like the more "mixing" plugins, but there "toolsy" plugins like Silencer or BSA Clipper are essential as they work sooooo good with an easy to use workflow
Silencer and and Oxford Drum gate are the best gates on the market by far. They complement each other for any solvable situation. If they don't fix what you want, you'll need trigger 2 or convert you audio to midi then sample it 😅
@@pyratellamarecordingstudio1062 For me silencer wins by simplicity. 2 moves and your bleed is gone (most of the times). When I need to push a little more or try crazy things (like gate individual pieces in a mono drum track), nothing beats oxford drum gate. I used to use debleeder by wilkinson , it's still great tool but since I discovered the other 2, I never used it again. Sometimes (for well recorded drums with a lot of ghost notes) I just use Saturn 2 as drum gate,
@@dillpereira250 Oxford seems to not take out quite as much noise but preserves the transient and keeps the original tone from Silencer. The auto leveler is also nice, depending on what you're working on.
@@dillpereira250 Silencer makes drums sound a bit unnatural/fake, Saturn 2 on the other hand is really great for de-bleeding and gate inside Drum Leveler is incredible as a standard gate if you need to gate afterwards (it has really huge lookahead time so even when some drum hit is barely above the threshold you still get full attack of the drum, it doesn't cut it like Silencer and other gate plugins)
I have RX too but prefer Spectralayers over RX these days. I upgraded just recently from version 10, which was already good to Spectralayers 11 and I am so pleased with the quality. Pretty amazing.
I have found metric AB to be invaluable. Especially paired with Fab filter Pro-Q, to find different frequencies In the references I'm comparing it to. Definitely want to use the looper in that context for ease of demoing a specific close to match for your target. Metric AB does have its own filters, but I find the fab filter works to be more specific and isolating just what I'm trying to hear. A very well done plugin in my opinion.
I'm amazed you haven't tried out any of the Tokyo Dawn Labs suite. Those of us who use there plugins know how good they are and if Mr. Dan Worrell champions them they can't be all that bad... right? 😁
Could you maybe elaborate why you are so convinced you need a plugin with a button that toggles its label from A to B that costs 300 bucks without discount? Why should anyone pay 300 bucks for something you can hookup in a few seconds with any DAWs basic features as well?
I think you are right. We are all buying way too much shite nobody really needs. But it's an excuse, that many people make us believe, that we are not good at what we are doing because we do not have the right tools. We should probably invest more time (and money) into understanding things than into buying plugins that will (NOT!) fix our shortcomings.
Sometimes Silencer works, sometimes not at all. I highly recommend checking out Drum Gate by Sonnox or the multiband gate from AixDSP. And wasn't there a nifty trick for reducing bleed with Saturn too?
I want to get silencer to chop up drum breaks for dnb haha. Also GET METRIC AB. It's really useful. I use it all the time when I'm mixing and mastering on the fly.
Its really good on the amen break, try chooing the kicks, snares, ghost snares and cymbals and route to different tracks and put silencer on all tracks...can get some real clean amen hits...
The last RX version I have bought was 9. Meanwhile it's not just that the iZotope update prices for long term customers have become totally unacceptable to me, especially for RX. Even more important is that I clearly prefer other tools like Spectralayers Pro and RipX over RX meanwhile - to a degree that I will not even consider updating RX any longer.
Wytse, I've used Saturn for years but only just now caught the fact that it's called SATURN because it provides SATURATION. I always thought of it as distortion, and never made the connection until you said SATURN and SATURATION in the intro. 😆
I know that's all about personal taste, but I find the DeBleeder from Wilkinson Audio better than Silencer. I've tried both, but DeBleeder is the winner. Silence has likeable GUI though ☺
Silencer is decent, but Oxford drum gate always beats it for me. Oxford always keeps the drum sound more intact and you can really dial it in however you want. Saturn2 being the best SATURATION Plugin ... maybe. But the best Distortion Plugins on the market imo are RIFT from Minimal Audio and the new TRASH (version3) of Izotope.
I dont get the Silencer hype. I jumped on a hype train as well and bought it but after few years I am not using it anymore. I wouldn't say its shit, it is completely usable and a quick way to to what it does, however i much more prefer MDrumLeveler, which apart from really great gate is great for well, Levelling and triggering midi. And yeah Metric AB is really great, kind of best plugin for checking with references.

Would it be a good gate for spoken word as well, or is it designed only for drums?
@@narrator-timothymckean only for drums

Must have plug ins: 110 or 220 VAC, Step Down DC conversion, and balanced Audio 😅
Sreamliner shows your crest factor as well.

Nova is amazingly clean. I love it
Did I just confused TDR with TDL?
TDR plugins are great but slower to use than Fabfilter and more CPU-heavy. I love Kotelnikov on a drum bus though
TDR has nothing really comparatively relevant to the tools he shows in this video.
Silencer is my favorite plugin!

1. Gain plugin
2. Mute plugin
3. A/B Volume match

An alternative to Silencer is FKFX's NoiseBleach (which is my fave noise gate). Good list!
I didn't hear about them until now. Thanks for the sugestion. I don't need a new gate plugin but I'll check it out
No probs. They do have a free lfo modulation plugin called Influx. Its amazing considering its free 'price'. Highly recommend it.
