  • I recently had the chance to try out the Bontrager Rally Mountain Bike Shoe for clipless pedals. This video covers my first-impressions and serves as a short-term review of these shoes. I also compare them to the Five.Ten MTB shoes I've been using for the past while. They're great shoes for enduro racing or downhill riding, as well as a general purpose trail mountain bike shoe. They blend casual style and clipless compatibility with flat pedal functionality.
These shoes can be purchased from our website and shipped directly to your front door! Just click on the link below to snag your own pair of these incredibly comfortable and capable shoes.

How do you find these softer soles perform on the downhills with a pedal like the mallet? Is a softer sole better or a stiffer one like the fivetens? Also can you still feel the pedal considering the thickness of these soles? Thanks :) (Personally I am deciding between these and the Giro Chamber II)

I can definitely feel the mallet enduro pedal better with the Bontrager Rally than I can with my 5.10 Maltese Falcon. I think the primary reason for that is that it seems the cleat is sucked up into the sole more on the Rally than they are on the 5.10s, effectively lowering the sole of the shoe onto the pins of the pedals better and creating more contact surface area. I can't speak to how the other 5.10's are with Mallets, like the Kestral or Hellcat, since I haven't tried those yet.
As for a comparison to the Giro Chamber II's that's probably my next video! I've just spent about 3 months on the Giro's. They're an awesome shoe, quality feels great, sole rubber seems grippy, shoe is comfortable enough (not quite to the luxurious level as the Rally, but definitely acceptable) and the sole is a little stiffer than the Rally; but I've been having a bear of a time getting out of my mallet enduro pedals quickly with them. I may spend a little more time playing with the cleat position on the Giro's, I've already gone back and forth with the cleat shim, I've wondered about taking a dremel to the sole near the cleat to give it a little more space, but I recently switched back to the Rally's to help answer someone else's question/comment on this video and I was blown away at how much easier it was to get out of the pedals with the Bontrager Rally as I'd already started to get accustomed to how hard it was to get out with the Giro's. I've pretty much decided I'll switch back to my Rally's full time, until something else catches my eye.

Do you still feel the same way about these shoes after this time?

Yeah I do! Since I made this video I also tried the Giro Chamber 2 shoes and then went back to riding the Rally's and haven't looked back. The comfort level for me is just too high to not wear them.
Full disclosure: I did end up breaking some sort of stiffening component in the sole at one point, I had my duffel bag on the ground, rifling through it, and I was kneeling with all my weight (175 lb) resting on my foot, which was bending the shoe in half and I felt something in the sole snap. Trek/Bontrager was awesome though and sent me a new pair of shoes at no charge, covered under warranty.

Good content!! Do you think these shoes will work on the shimano XT 2020 platform pedal as well as on the crank pedal
    ?

Thanks for checking out the video! And yes. I've found that since the cleat is very recessed in the sole of the shoe that they work out really well as a crossover shoe to be used for both clipless and platform. I'm sure if you're riding flats all of the time you'd be better off with flat specific shoes, but these work well if you only want to own one shoe but find yourself using either pedal type often.

I haven't ridden these shoes in a while as I've been testing a pair of Giro Chamber II's. I've kind of forgotten. I'll wear them again later this week and report back.

I rode these shoes again over the weekend and can happily report that they're much easier to get out of than my Giro Chamber II's. Getting unclipped has actually been a continuing struggle for me with my Giro's but I kept hoping they would get better with time. After switching back to these Bontragers I'm honestly going to have a hard time ever wanting to wear the Giro's again...

Question. I just purchased bike pedals that you can clip in on one side and no clipless on the other side. www.rei.com/product/116154/shimano-xt-pd-t8000-spd-pedals Would these shoes work great for both sides of this bike pedal? Thanks.

I haven't tested this myself to be sure, but in my opinion these shoes would work as well for that application as any that I've seen thus far!
