I remember this song being played a lot when the UK was at war with Argentina over their invasion of the Falkland Islands. The BBC had used this song a couple of years earlier as the theme tune to a documentary about the aircraft carrier HMS Ark Royal, the Ark Royal went off to war with this song playing... emotional stuff!

He lets the _tone_ of his voice and the beauty of the _melody_ wash over you first. Only when _that's_ established does he start embellishing it. (Aretha Franklin was also awesome at this.) This is my favourite song by Rod Stewart, it made my late Mum cry when she first heard it as my Dad was in the Royal Navy when she had my older brother and in a phone call to her when she told him their son was born he said he would be home as fast as he can when he gets leave and Hope's the ship flies him home to them. She loved this always and its my favourite too. He is a wonderful singer and I think he is still going strong.
