@CERENA JOHNSON I know in the movie when she expressed desires to kill herself he was genuinely surprised and his response 'why' was like he broke character from his act and for a moment he was like 'dude, look at me. That is not a good idea'. The notion was in the original film Beetlejuice killed himself, hence why he can do the head thing, and also when someone kills themselves they become civil servants in the afterlife hence why the workers all look the way they do: their deaths were self inflicted. Now in the musical the set up is inspired but different from the movie and animation (obviously) but his own benefits aside it wouldn't be impossible to imagine that beetlejuice knowing the route suicide leads too would be quick to discourage it. Lydia so far as we know is the only living being who has EVER been able to see him and as such the only part of the living world he has any influence over so whilst she is the best chance of freedom he has his desires to stop her killing herself may have some degrees of empathy and compassion. Beetlejuice may be a bad guy but as the musical illustrates, he's not necessarily a complete monster and as such a little empathy isn't beyond him.
Logically he needs Lydia alive as she is the best bet for his freedom, emotionally: he knows what suicide gets you in the afterlife and he wouldn't wish that on anyone least of all her. Lore: in the movie it was originally conceived that Beetlejuice killed himself via hanging hence why his neck is so disjointed and such (partly confirmed via word of god) and also everyone social/civil worker in the netherworld is someone who killed themselves (ie slit wrists, threw themselves into ongoing traffic). With that logic it explains why in the movie Beetlejuice was Juno's assistant, he offed himself and so he's not part of their system. So with that as a backdrop it explains why he breaks character when he first meets Lydia in the movie and learning she wants to kill herself his response is a surprised and flat 'why?' And that is very telling as if in that one word he's like 'dude, look at me. That is not a good idea'. In the musical when he first meets her and she says she is gonna jump he literally screams NO! before composing himself. Admittedly this was fresh from the invisible reprise and he has renewed hope of freedom but a part of me thinks this was the musical's version of the movie where the ghost with the most accidently showed he had a heart.

for those who don't know his name is actually, "Betelgeuse" but anglicized it sounds like "beetle-juice." Betelgeuse is the arabic name of the brightest start in the Orion constellation and its scientific designation. translated literally it means, "the armpit of Orion." correctly it means "Orion's right hand," literally describing the star. the original character has some ties to roman goddesses or at-least avatars of them via Juno (the case worker). it is implied that he in life committed suicide from depression from a bad relationship.

Things I love about this:
1. The Demon BoyTM is like an annoying gnat- just zipping from place to place aND I LOVE HIM
2. These two characters share an interesting dynamic; I’ve been into Beetlejuice for a while now- and I didn’t read them as BJ and Lydia (I AM SO SORRY IF THAT MAKES YOU UPSET THEY ARE SO WONDERFUL)- the two are excellently drawn and everything about them is amazing; (so it’s in no way artistic ability cause HUNy you are good there ;)) but I just saw them as two different entire characters like maybe a witch or a pagan goth who’s suicidal and a demon or spirit who died at their age trying to lure them into releasing them from their bindings by accidentally engaging in a contract? And as time progresses feelings develop maybe?? Idk it’s just a thought on a concept that I would love to be explored more with those two
But either way, I loved it regardless and I hope to see more from you because this was great and sorry for the long comment! :)
AN ADDITIONAL:
3. I love the way that the demon character is very respectful and wary of his touches- respecting her boundaries and apologizing for overstepping them ie: pulling her off the roof.
